Italian roast coffee in an Apache Railway mug, please.

***Ulrich, those trains are very neat. Narrow looking tracks.

***Ed, thanks for the correction.

***YGW, how long until you are model railroading in the new building?

Cheers! Rob

Good Evening!

It has been a beautiful day - lots of sunshine, which also meant a lot of noise, as the neighboring kids were let loose. How can small children make such a terrific noise?

I am a little off track today. We changed to DST last night and it always takes me a couple of days to adjust my inner clock accordingly. Each year, the adjustment takes a tad longer.

Model railroads come in all sizes and shapes, from that sub-miniature, hardly visible 1/450 scale of T gauge up to the conglomerate dubbed G scale, which is a bundle of different scales running on 45mm track. 7/8th scale is gaining popularity among those, who love scratchbuilding and I have seen some fantastic small layouts made in that scale.

Nothing beats 1/2 scale, which you find predominatly in Britain. It´s so close to the real thing - in fact, it is the real thing! But take a look for yourself!

Enjoy this video of the Fairbourne Steam Railway!

Mr. B .... That sounds like the kind of train show where you can get Thomas the Tank trains. Glad you found some trees to buy .... It has been a long time since I was at a train show, and I used to go to them often. ... I shop on the internet now. LHS is too far away, and prices are too high.

Yes, lots of Thomas, too.  I saved a few dollars on the Supertrees, below the Walthers price, no shipping and the sales tax was included.

Still, it's good to see families with kids at least being exposed to the hobby and all but 2 of them having a great time.  But, the club layouts do need to take precautions to protect their models.

***Garry, which did you get? Are they like daylight? Cool? Warm? My train room has track lighting, but I still need to decide on which bulbs will enhance the layout.

Rob .... I bought mine at Lowe's home imporvement store. If you search Lowe's website for "LED shop lights", you can find what I bought. They hang by chains from above as do most shop lights. They are 4' long and retail price is now $46.98 each. They have bright white light. They seem brighter than I recall the old florescent lights when they were new. ... I intend to get more, and then I will will shop around for a better price if there is one.

Ray .... It sounds like you are having a good weekend filled with train activities . Great !

YGW ... The hobby barn looks great. Looks like room for a another hobby if you are into working on cars.

Ed ... Thanks for posting YGW's photos. Shall we razz YGW for his lack of technology skills?  .. LOL

Have a nice day....

***ED, progress is looking great. How many months do you expect it will take until you are actually working on a layout in there?

Hi, Rob,

Keep in mind that I am only acting as YGW's "Press Secretary". He sends me the photos and I post them for him through Photobucket as a favor to him since he has no desire to open a photo-hosting account.

Any questions about the building/layout details may be directed to YGW.

Thanks...

Gidday Chloe, well I guess I’m honour bound to behave myself in the Diner, and while one is on their best behaviour, it would be bad manners to question the generous hosts local fare that has been put on offer, though those Wisconsin craft beers would be a definite exception to the “rule”. (I must admit that herrinchokers oysters sounded very nice !!A Maine thing??).
There has also been the question of Snow!!! I can’t really comprehend the amount of snow that some of you guys have had, (along with the winter blues), and have thought it would have been in poor taste to comment on a regular basis about my local temperatures in the 60s – 70s F range, and the summertime BBQs.

All of which is a long-winded way of saying the BBQ lamb chops and “rabbit tucker” is on  me.

I’ve enjoyed your Milwaukee/ Wisconsin photos Garry.

Ed, thanks for posting that Buster Keaton film, it’s well worth a second look.

YGW, that’s an impressive barn raising you ‘ve got, going on there!!

Dave, punching bears on the nose!!Huh? Black Eye

Late night diners,

My hobby shop found some old Atlas 40' 8' door Southern boxcar. I decided to get it before they are sold out again. They are hard to find.

Ulrich:

Very interesting video, and very relaxing! I watched the whole thing. It made me want to start a new career as a locomotive engineer! Not exactly what you might call 'straight' track, but that is most of the fun. The vegetation was so lush! When I was in England many years ago I couldn't get over how green the fields were.

Thanks for sharing!

Dave

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

YGW's Hobby Barn

Update Photos!

Hello Everyone! Time for a "Weekend Update" of YGW's Hobby Barn...

Friday the Carpenters installed all of the doors, windows and the hurricane anchors. They also installed some Tyvek tape on the joints. Blocking through the trusses... The morning was interrupted rain....️ Storm

Today was a short day. We installed the fire rated Densglass material between the garage area and hobby room. Finished the small pieces of missing plywood on the barn and garage doors. Then we installed Tyvek over these areas and tapped all of the joints. Took a tumble today. A six foot ladder scooted out from under me. I went down hard landing on my air gun on the place where   I had surgery this summer. Oh my aching body...Time for rest and ibuprofen.

That's the news from Northern Virginia!

I'll try to make some time for a nice Sunday Dinner at the Diner! Hope Vinnie is enjoying his vacation. We ARE being well behaved. Angel

I hope he brings some TREATS back for us Dinner  Pizza  Cake

Wishing everyone well...

Regards, Ed

Mr. B ... Was it a good show?.... and did you acquire some good stuff ?

It was an OK show, not particularly good or particularly bad.  My main goal was to get a box of Supertrees, which I did at a decent price, but that's all I bought.  There were no vendors selling detail parts at all.

A number of vendors that I used to see just don't go to this show anymore.  This is a "toy and train" show, and every time I go I see fewer trains and more Star Wars toys.  The show is also heavy on Lionel, and I'm in HO.

I'm getting back into working on my layout, but I lost some of my enthusiasm when my LHS closed due to retirement and a greedy landlord who wanted more than the shop could afford.  It's somewhat satisfying to see that the former train shop has been an empty storefront for well over a year now.

Evenin' folks!

Yep, Garry I will be spending the weekend with trains! 1/1/ scale today.  Rules class today for the museum.  I only stayed for the first two sections of the class (General rules for everyone, and the class for everyone that will be on traincrew and associated things).  The third class is air brake and train handling for Engineers and Conductors.  I generally stay for the third section for for review of the information, but since tomorrow is the Batavia Train Shoew, I headed out as soon as I could so I could get the car loaded for the NMRA Booth at the show.  Oh, yes I passed the two classes i attended.  got 100% on tyhe fiorst test, and 96% on the second as I read one question wrong...  Duh!

What temperature lighting do you all use for your layouts? Picked up some larger soft white LED bulbs for lighting my kitchen and Relax soft white for the dining area. At 5.5 - 6watts per bulb, I definitely want to do this in the train Room. Have a lot of bulbs down there on dimmer switches to replace. The question is, what temp range would look best with model train layouts?

Rob, far more important than the "temperature" of the bulbs, is the CRI.  That is "Color Rendering Index".  A color rendering index (CRI) is a quantitative measure of the ability of a light source to reveal the colors of various objects faithfully in comparison with an ideal or natural light source.  The higher the CRI the better the color will be.  Here are a couple photos from my layout.  The first is using standard 2700°k CFL's with a CRI around 80:

Absolutely terrible color (The camera is set to automatic in both photos)!

The second was taken of the same area much later using CFL's that were 5000°k but have a CRI of 92.  Much, much more faithful to the colors.

A lot more on CRI here.

(I have used the place in the link for most of my High CRI Cfls I use today.)  Shop lights are the absolute worst with a CRI of about 60...  LEDs generally are not really good with CRI, but there are some that can get into the high 80's to low 90's.  They are pricey but worth the expense.

Catch you all later!

Good morning everyone.

Flo - You got stuck w**king this weekend too, huh? Bummer. I will have a cinnamon hot cake stack, with real maple syrup, and a glass of milk. Thanks.

Lets see if I can get caught up here -

YGW - Nice progress on the hobby barn! In answer to your last question, we actually still have a couple snowblowers in stock... Most likely keeping them at this point till next season.

Ken - It sounds crazy, but, try lavender oil... It just might help with the head cold...

Galaxy - Sorry you are still having back trouble. That is never any fun. Hopefully the Dr's can get something working to help out with that a little.

Mr. B - Hoping that the knee issue is easily rectified.

Ulrich - Neat croc!

Ed - So, I not only missed the show due to a w**k issue, I missed a chance at (maybe) seeing your layout? That just stinks... I assume it was it part of the show "tour" group?

Ray - Glad the presentation went well.

Steve - Enjoy your weekend!

Vinnie - Hope you enjoy yours as well. Wink

Weather front - Went from 55 on Tuesday to 25 on Wednesday, then back up to 50 Thursday, then hit 75 yesterday! Today is cloudy, damp, and a cooler 57.

W**k front - Sunday we moved the registers and computers for that part of the remodel... And the Dunce idiot electricians did the CAT6 cable wrong! They didn't follow either the store wiring pattern nor the CAT color codes! So, no registers, no computers, no nothing on Monday. (I was possibly going to be at the Kirkland show Sunday afternoon, but the register move cancelled that...) Got the CAT color codes correct, but still nothing was working, as we didn't have a master CAT diagram, and those idiots moved stuff without anyone's knowledge of it... The companies IT guys and gals were not exactly helpful... The first one hung up on me, the second one said it was someone else's department, and the third one couldn't figure out why the registers were showing 3 Surprise different IP Addy's, and all of them wrong! (Happened while the Dunce electricians were "trouble shooting" it by unplugging various cables on the main controller and randomly placing them elsewhere.... Bang Head) So, we didn't sell a dime on Monday, as we couldn't do anything! I brought in Charlie (the computer guy I know) and it was so messed up even he couldn't get things going! (Without a controller wiring diagram, it's kinda hard to!) Tuesday afternoon we finally got a IT guy from the company who was able to get things going, so I will be creating a wiring diagram sometime this weekend, as he didn't send us one.

Trains - Caught a couple CSX intermodal trains on Tuesday afternoon, and bumped into my uncle in the process... He got caught at the grade crossing while I was there railfanning. Bad news was I ended up on the wrong side of the tracks, as I was on the track 2 side, for better lighting on the eastbound, chatting with my uncle, when, a westbound came through on track 1, (even better lighting for it, as it was afternoon), blocked behind the eastbound from the track 2 side! Oh well... Next time....

Well, hope I caught up with everything, as I should start getting ready for w**k.

Hope all are well, and all enjoy the day!

Good Afternoon!

Time for a cup of coffee and a slice of that same apple strudel that Garry is having, topped with vanilla ice cream and rum raisins, Zoe, if you´d be so kind! Thank you!

It´s a beautiful spring day, just a littel overcast with many really sunny spells. I went outside for a few moments, just in time to see a long intermodal train from Switzerland pulled by a consist of Swiss Federal Railway (SBB Cargo) Re 4/4 II electrics - still a rare sight this far up north! Couldn´t stay for long, as my back is still killing me.

Does anyone have any model railroad plans this weekend ?

No, none soever! I have pretty much lost interest in my Swiss layout. All I do is to keep it in shape for an eventual sale. Before I start any other MRR activity, I need to see it go.

I do a little day dreaming, now and then, dreaming I had a wonderful O gauge tinplate layout - of course with a Marklin tinplate Croc of 1930´s manufacture roaming about. One of those reptiles has recently been auctioned at the "Bay", fetching $33,000!

When I grow up and get rich... Petra tells me I´ll never grow up!

I know we are celebrating MR´s 1,000th edition at its place of birth, but do you mind joining me in a cab ride down the Mariazeller Railway in Austria, a 750mm electric narrow gauge line through one of the most romantic areas in Europe?

Well, here we go:

Have a good one!

 Evening Diners Sigh

Flo, Ed and I will have a Beer Oh what the heck, give everyone what they like to drink.

Been down in the dump's for the last day. To many things to talk about here I guess. But I am worried about my brain getting my right hand to write what I am trying to write that's in my head. Today I was trying to write the word Year and looked down and I was writting Ken? Or I am writting a date, say 3-5-17 and I start writing 6-5-17? Something is not firing right in the old gray matter. Sigh

Evening Diners,

Ken- I understand the situation that SSI can cause.

No model railroading lately or read the April issue from cover to cover either. It's been a couple of boring days or weeks.

My brother is planning to live with his 20+ older girlfriend by buying a house together. So Murray will be leaving too. He's also thinking of getting another cat because Liz's cat died. My mom wants to ends this but he had a chance over two years ago. She wants his to have relationship with a girl within the same age.

Happy Friday fellow diners,

I'll take a large peanut butter chocolate milk shake, no whipped cream on top.

I'm enjoying the spring weather. I went south last Sunday to visit my aunt in North Carolina. She's recovering from cancer treatments. It had been a nice little break from the snow and cold here in the Northeast.

On the MR front, I took my BLI Reading T1 and 35-freight cars to the club layout. Running the first three loops gave me no issues, though the T1 derailed at the tunnel entrance but rerailed itself. However, with the loco, the wire bundle and drawbar are finnicky and the model shorts in certain spots when the same wire harness and drawbar are not perfect. I'm thinking I'll try a replacement decoder and if that doesnt work, get BLI to service the model. May buy a backup T1 as the only other Reading loco I have is a Bowser VO1000. The model is an older run with a Tsunami decoder. I got a P2K Northeastern Caboose in the Reading steam era scheme second hand so I'm grateful for that. It's from the first run. I spent time adding Code88 wheels, newer P2K trucks without axle wipers, and put on coupler boxes attached with screws. I also added yellow trim to the VO1000 and caboose after studying pictures online. I'll post pics soon.

A middle aged fellow was attacked by a bear last fall just outside of Sudbury, ON. He had been a champion boxer in his youth. Apparently he hadn't lost his touch. He punched the bear right in the nose. He said the blood sprayed everywhere. The bear backed off looking quite suprised (if one could interpret a bruin's expression). The former boxer only suffered a few scratches.

Well, you have to expect a few scratches when you fight bear knuckles.

Good Morning,

A cool day here with a high of only 35F. Oh well, at least it is above freezing.

Henry, I was prescribed statins for high bad cholesterol some years ago. I decided to change my diet, but just moderately, and I only took the 10mg pills once every second day. My numbers are now fine. I told the doc and he said just keep doing that as it is working. I admit that sometimes I go a month without taking a pill and the numbers are still good. My wife has Gerd and she finds that she must sleep on an incline so she has an adjustable bed. That and the meds are the only way she can keep her reflux at bay.

Went out for lunch yesterday with the MIL. We also took her to a large nursery that has a large gift shop. I managed to get out to the hobby shop and pick up the money for a loco they had sold for me. I have put it into a fund for a new pair of binocs.

Not much in the plan for the day.
