Unfortunately, the drill bit was a bit larger than the hole I really needed, so I'll have to hope that the slightly loose fit won't be a problem.

If worse comes to worse, try using a drop or two of red thread locker. I had to use a little bit on the flywheels on one of my GP20s as they won't stay put on the motor shafts. (The motor spun but the flywheels didn't move.) Same material as flywheel cement.

Trying out an experiment. Removing very stubborn lettering with 2000 grit automotive sand paper. (Wouldn't come off with MIcrso-sol or with paint stripper.) So far seems to be working very well.

 Evening Diners

Flo, Ed will have a Royal Crown, I will have spoon of Horseradish and a Beer cheaser.

I have felt like Ash Pitt all day. Nasal passage on the left side is all clogged up and I left the Horseradish at home. Sigh

ATF and Train Front So far it has been a winner! No wheel cleaning in what? 6 days so it seems to be working fine. I will waite a few more days before I use the ATF on the main line.

That is I have in me, so later.

YGW's Hobby Barn UPDATE

Recent Photos:

This the progress from the last two days. Trusses installed, ice and water shield installed on lower edge of roof.

This is a view of the rear of the barn.

This view is standing in the middle of the hobby room. The large ladders are 8' ladders. The ceiling height in the hobby room is 11'.

The garage ceiling is approximately 13'.

This view is standing in the door way of the hobby room looking at the end wall. 2x6 walls at 16" on center.

Excellent Progress!

These photos are posted by me on behalf of YGW.

Happy Railroading,

Ed

Mr. B - How hard was it to replace the cracked axle ?

It was relatively simple.  I did have to drill out the opening in the axle shaft a bit.  There was no way the stub axles attached to the wheels would go in without opening it up a bit.  When I did this years ago, they sent complete wheel sets, already assembled.  Unfortunately, the drill bit was a bit larger than the hole I really needed, so I'll have to hope that the slightly loose fit won't be a problem.

Afternoon Diners,

Ulrich- Over the past few years I too get tired of watching things on the tv. Not because of the internet or the world's problems, anything like that. It just seems like tv shows went downhill and real boring and stupid.

After a long period off the layout planning I went back to work. The original idea was to have two different sidings. One for team track and the other ???. So I laid the track down with paper pieces, handful of cars and vehicles to figure out the solution of the problem. Basically their was one. The two tracks serve the same foundation meaning one business/industry.

Which was a good thing, I don't have to worry anymore. Sure the plan was going to be three rail served business, but I'll take two anyway.

Just dropping by to say "Hi" to all of you.

A boring day with nothing to report, other than that April has decided on an early start this year. We had just about all the types of weather you can imagine, from beautiful sunshine all the  way to hail, sleet and snow.

With the day being nearly done, all I will do for the rest of it is to sit back, relax and watch some train movies on Youtube. Petra and I have long given up on switching the idiot box on. We are on terrestrial digital HD broadcasting, but the free service will be terminated by the end of this month. I am not paying for cable TV, so the TV set will serve only a decorative purpose from now on. Maybe I´ll replace it with a fish tank!

Flo, I feel like having a hot chocolate, spiced up a little with you know what, please!

Good Morning,

A sunny, cold day here so the melting is halted for the next day or so.

Jim, the last scheduled run using steam on the CN occured on April 25,1960. It was the passenger train from The Pas to Winnipeg. Pulling it was Mountain #6043 that is on display in a park in Winnipgeg. I actually saw that train run on its way to The Pas. I remember riding my bike out to see it go by and despite an early spring that year it was cold. There was a lot of steam running out of Winnipeg on both CN and CP right through 1959. In fact there is a great video of 'Canadian Steam 1959' that was filimed largely in the Winnipeg area that year by a fellow from Washington state. It was recorded with audio too so it is a great video. It was all over in early 1960 on both roads. Steam ended in Ontario in 1959.

Not much planned for today. I just got up a while ago and my wife is still asleep as we didn't get home from the ER until 5 a.m. I took my wife in about 9 p.m. as she had shortness of breath and was feeling 'funny'. The concern was a heart attack but everything checked out ok which was a great relief.

Have a great day,

CN Charlie

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a short stack of Buckwheat Pancakes with real NYS Maple surup (the season has begun!) and a pot of Seneca Lake Blend Dark Raost Coffee for my R&GV RR Mug.  Oh, a couple sausage links with that would do nicely too.

Last night about 11PM I had a nice long message all typed up and ready to post....  Hit the wrong button and it all disapeared!  Grrrrrrrrr!!!  Si, I'll try it again this morning.

Howmus - Oh what a tease ! What was your clinic on ? Please share your clinic with us !

First off you can call me Ray, most everyone does.  It is in my signature at the bottom.  Your train shed is coming along nicely!

The clinic was called "Gorge"ous Rock Strata.  It was based on the latest scenery work I have been doing on the SLOW.  I have posted much of what I showed already here.  I gave a breif description of the geological makeup of the bedrock here in the Finger Lakes Region of NYS and then showed how to create the look of shale (both Oil Shale and Gray Shale).  So I showed how to go from:

To this:

And end up with this:

It included what materials to use, how to paint it, and how to make the greenery including the trees.

Today I have a long list of items to try to accomplish including working on the display board for the Batavia Train Show on Sunday.  Have some major updating to do because of the move....

Catch you all later!

Hello all

Been a busy morning. Trying to marshall forces to get some stuff the VP demanded be completed and get one unit unit ready for a walk and another for a rewalk. Oh I cannot wait for this week to end when I go back to regular production work and finIShed with all of these deliveries. It is like having a baby once a week ! Painful !

Hobby front - Yesterday the carpenters set the rest of the trusses and then installed two rows of plywood on the front and back of the roof.

Ed - How did you find out about the flikr site ? There is some great work being posted on there ! We in the building industry think English Ivy should be banned from the planet. It is very destructive to buildings !

Mike - Than you. To answer your questions - The heat will be a wood stove in the garage area. Eventually I will install a through the wall unit in the Hobby room. No plumbing as in sinks and toilets. I do plan to install a hose bib on the out side like the type used on horse farms for exterior water supply.

Mr. B - How hard was it to replace the cracked axle ?

Steve - Oh ! Pretty neat and thanks. I will have to look up "neologians" I have no idea what that word means !

Garry - Wolves and Coyotes mate ? I had no clue they would mate. I assumed they would fight each other to the death !

Ulrich - I hope your day is going okay.

History qoute of the day :

One question, when ever I click on page 11 of this diner forum, it goes right to your post with the video, not the top of the page.

I'm adding yet another reply to try to kick us to page twelve!

OK,

So, has anyone ever been to the North American Prototype Modelers layout?

I follow them on the Flickr site and I enjoy seeing the photos there very much!

https://www.flickr.com/photos/napmltd/

Here is a link to more photos on their site:

http://www.napmltd.org/pictures.html

and I'll post another photo here to try to use up what's left of Page 11 Huh?

Empire Builder's "Lewis & Clark Pass" Pullman running on the Wheeling and Lake Erie back in 2009.

OK, maybe another video?

Hope that kicks us on to page 12...

Good Luck, Ed

Hi, Folks

yougottawanta
Ed Man that is fast growing vines ! Thye grew that much in three years on that building.

Yes! And eighty years later they are still growing!

This view is the same side of the building but looking in the other direction. I am standing in the very spot where the water tower stood. We (maintenance) would take chain saws to that stuff every few years but it just keeps coming back. English Ivy of some sort. Not Kudzu, but close.

Glad you are liking the pictures I am posting for you. I'm glad to help out.

Mike, That is happening to me, too. (Jumping to the film frame) There must be some http language in the embed link that makes it do that? Let's try to get to the next page so we can avoid it. Sorry for the inconvenience Embarrassed

Ken, I know what you mean about dealing with govt. web sites. Last year I took some voluntary layoff time so younger guys wouldn't get laid off. The completely IDIOTIC web site that is the Ohio Unemployment "service" requires me to type in my full SS number every time I log in Dunce

I can not understand! Every secure site I deal with has other encrypted log-in procedures, the unemployment site is like going back to the eighties!Bang Head

How about a photo to help take up space to kick us to the next page?

Hope everyone is well...

See you tomorrow,

Ed

YGW, it does kind of look like an H.  I had to go back and see what you were talking about.  If you look closely at the letter, the far leg of what looks like an H, actually has a bend towards the middle, to make the upper and bottom legs of the K.

Not sure what type of print you would call that, a Milwaukee original, I guess.

By the way, nice layout / garage building!  The basement under the train room, for heating, storage, etc.?  Any plumbing? or do you just step outside while in train room?  Laugh

Mike.

Head Cold Thanks to Meth Labs the new Sinus Pills have not help me! Yesterday it felt like I had a ballon inflated in my left sinus. Wife wanted another Corn Beef rost so I stopped on the way home. Right there next to the corn beef roast was Horseradish Hum, I wonder? Confused Spent $2.00 for it, got home and took a couple of good whiff's and the ballon was deflated! Big Smile I ate some as well and boy you can feel this stuff clearing out the nasal passages! Yes Plus it taste way better than Vicks! Smile, Wink & Grin

At least in my state, the stuff that could be turned into meth is kept behind a pharmacy counter. Ask and with ID and such it can be purchased there.

The other thing that the horseradish story reminded me of was one of my cooking blunders from a few years ago. I make Christmas dessert for Mom, Dad and me, That particular year I decided to make a double peppermint cake. I put crushed peppermint candies as well as peppermint flavoring in both the cake and the frosting. First attempt with using flavoring oils. You probably guessed it... I put too much flavoring in the cake. Used a full bottle when a half would have done it. The resultant item had about as much peppermint as peppermint schnapps. That flavor would clean out your sinuses. (From what Dad told me on the flavor and I did have to look up the spelling of schnapps. A word with a quadthong. If you don't know that English term, feel free to look it up.)

Flo SoapBox box please. Becuse of my low income my wife gets a smig of SSI. We are talking between in a year maybe $400 to $700 range. Becuse I make commission my income is never the same from month to month. They base what they giver next month. Then they want the money back and I have to fill out paper work so she gets a waver and does not (means me) have to pay back there mistake!

Mistake is not from me. Every month I fax in my pay stubbs like clock work. This month they had a new twist! SoapBox They want permission to get into my bank account from on LINE! HECK NO!!!!!!!!!!!!! I will give them every printed out statment they want! I am not hiding or lying about anything!

Beides the principal, last thing I wanted to have is my checking account number. I hate the fact they have my wife and I SS numbers. Lets faces it, where will hackers go, to Groverment computers to get SS numbers to steal. Thrown in account number? Whistling One of the reason I hate using the VA for health care I will add. They where hit big time before I started using them.

The 406 Train film must have been filmed in 1958 as that was the newest auto in the film.  When did CN stop running steam power.  I think we saw steam on the old Churchill line in either 57 or 58.

Nice weather here today.  With later sunset I am now getting two walks in with Adele, my Airedale.  Got to get in shape for summer trip.

Lion has the right idea on pasta plate size.  I miss the real long spaghetti for my youth.  Used to always have the stuff with a least two foot long noodles.  It's all in short grocery store boxes now.

Mission accomplished on my clunking GP9.  I have two of these.  Years back, one of them started exhibiting the old cracked axle symptoms, so I swapped them out (Walthers provided the replacements free) but left the other as-is because, well, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.  Today, I got more axles and fixed it, same problem.

What was weird though was that when I got it back on the tracks, the headlight was working again.  I have no idea why, and I didn't even take the shell off to repair the axles.  Let's see how long it lasts....

I learned it online. I knew it was a form of "victuals," so I Googled "etymology of victuals".

And almost all words go that far back. And farther. Except for the stuff Shakespeare coined and other neologisms.

Speaking of wolves, the is a very rare pair of red wolves in the Nature Center in Land Between the Lakes where we are. the peopel there are trying to breed more of them because the species is nearly extinct. Everytime there are new puppies which grow up enough to release into the wild, there is a problem. They eventually mate with coyotes. Such much for being red wolves.

Hey all

Flo bring me a cup of coffee, ( as I drag my tired behind to the booth ) by the way is it Friday yet ?

Ed thanks for posting teh photos they look great. I cannopt express how much I apprciate that.

Bridging - I read a few questions on the bridging. The answers given were correct for std frame construction. Bridge is used to perfom "firestopping" I installed it for other reasons and in this build it is not required being a shed/barn. I installed bridging to give the wall extra strength ( 9' tall walls on the Hobby side, 10' + tall walls on the garage side ) and just as importantly it will be a long while before I scrape enough cabbage together to finsih all of the walls off with drywall. The blocking will help keep the studs from twisting all over the place ! Firestopping is just an extra bonus in this case.

CN Charlie - Border crossing as in coming into the states ?

Steve - I am IMPRESSED ! Where did you learn all of that ? Thanks

Ulrich - Yes the construction is not as heavy as built in your neck of the woods. Part of the design is based on snow loads. Where I live we do not get much snow. On the rare occasion when we do you hear about a roof or two failing.  - Of course they are light until you have to move them by hand and then you thank God that they are not any thicker !

Ed Man that is fast growing vines ! Thye grew that much in three years on that building.

Ken - Glad your friend is doing better

Lion - LOL ! Plate to small ?

Mike - Mike is it me or is there an H where there should be a K ? In the name on the loco ?

Mr. B - The short answer to your question is "yes" many people install water in their barns especially if you have livestock.

ROR - Oh geez I had somtehing similiar happen to me except it was shaving cream

Howmus - Oh what a tease ! What was your clinic on ? Please share your clinic with us !

Johnboy - It is facing mainly North but slightly west. The direction was chosen based on site conditions. Not weather. I needed a location that first didnt block any of our other wonderful views, had a slope so we could build in a "walk out basement"...

Der - Amazing you have been busy ! Did you read Steves response on "Vitals" pretty intersting stuff ! Who would have known that it goes that far back !

Skipping the history qoute today. Just to tired.

No problem johnboy,  Big Smile  I was probably wrong about it being bridging, as Ed pointed out, it might be a fire code thing.

Sir Madog
Can you imagine how thrilled we were seeing and hearing a wolf pack on that meadow bordering our back yard?

Lucky so-and-so!!! I can imagine how thrilled you were! I would be beside myself! It is wonderful to hear that the wolf population is recovering.

In 50+ years at our cottage on the north shore of Georgian Bay I have never seen a wolf in person. We have heard them lots of times and I have seen numerous paw prints and scat piles but never the real thing. Interestingly, my dad had a big male walk out of the bush very close to him about 10 years ago. The wolf had to have known that he was there because he was upwind of the wolf, and he had a dog with him. The wolf stared at him for a couple of minutes then calmly sauntered back into the bush. My dad had been going to the cottage since 1938 and that was only his second sighting.

Take care Ulrich!

Ed ... I watch the video of train 406. ... CN's HQ in Montreal was familiar to me because I had been to it numeorus times. ... Interesting comments by the narrator. At one point he was talking about the future of railroading and said it was nearly certain trains will one day have nuclear power. ... Of course, this video was in the era of 6-man crews which are now history.

Good Morning,

A sunny day forecast here with a temp of near 40F! The snow is definitely melting! I think it will be largely gone by next weekend except for the large piles left by the snowplows.

Had a great weekend. We went down to Thief River Falls to visit our friends. The border crossing was very easy as usual. It is a small crossing with very low traffic. Even though it was early Saturday afternoon, there weren't any cars ahead of us or behind. The guards must be bored there as they always give Robbie a Milk Bone treat. He looks forward to getting one and is up and alert as soon as I roll down the window. We went out to dinner and had really great ribs at a nice restaurant that frankly is surprising to find in such a small centre.

Ed, thanks for posting those NFB links. I have seen those films before but will view them again.

Soon time to get ready for my Monday fitness class.

Have a great day,

CN Charlie

DER - That makes sense. Our area was settled mainly by the Scotts, Germans and some Irish. I wonder from which of these "vitals" came from ?

…well, let’s see. Vitals has a Romance = Latin root, so I’m guessing not the German. Scots and Irish share a Celtic heritage – but the Scots would have been influenced by English linguistically perhaps more than the Irish. I think English, at any rate by the time of Dickens, and by inference prior to that had vitals = food. So I’m going to hazard Scots.

Vitals in the sense of "food" comes from Old English vittels, which comes to us by way of French vitaille, which comes from New Latin victualia, from which we also get the English synonym victuals. Both derive from Middle Latin victualis, from Old Latin victus, meaning "food," from the verb vivere, meaning "to live."
