Hello Folks:  I just read about Barry – if you’re looking for it, the condolences page on the Forum is http://cs.trains.com/mrr/f/88/p/256364/2868978.aspx#2868978 Sad news, our thoughts and prayers are with Audrey and the family. Ray:
Oh Man!!!!  I hope I am wrong with this....
I came on it by a different route Ray, so I think it’s unfortunately real. – on the Diner–patrons- I- have- met theme, my count is two. Teffy  and Trolley Rob. That was quite a while ago…
I’m picking up from Pages 16 and 17 of the April Diner, so please bear with me….
(by YGW) DER, Brent, Lion, Henry etc... Hello
I’m still here! Have made a bit of progress on the layout as the mainline roadbed is down – but I think it could do with a good go-over with a roller of some sort. My wife used to have a roller on a handle for some craft thingy but it seems that’s long gone. Maybe a short length of 1” dowel (I’ve several bits I could cut down) will do the trick. I haven’t laid any roadbed for the spurs yet. I may use a different type of material than the AeroTape I’ve used for the main.  Unsurprisingly, my actual track line through the major curves differs somewhat from that planned in SCARM. When I’m to a stage where a photo may be less confusing than it would be at present, I’ll post something.
The only VW anecdote I can add is that our Beetle was repainted in the summer and the bright lads down at the local body shop left it outside to dry on a bug strewn evening. Need I add that we didn’t  appreciate that too much – but see as we used them because we could not afford better, we got what we paid for…..
As to fitting engines in cars, all I have to offer is this scene from the last layout:
Garry:
I tested the tracks I was working on, and one of the turnouts need some work still. Otherwise, everything works well. These tracks will be difficult to reach later on, and therefore, I want all trains to run on them with no derailing or other problems.
– I hear ya! I’m going to get (that is a measurable and attainable goal Clown) my track to where I can run a train in reverse around all the parts where that is feasible without troubles BEFORE I start on the scenery above grade!  There, I’ve put it in writing. If I’m absent for long periods you’ll now know a possible cause….
And on your request – this is days late, but
(by Dave) My brother owned a stock 4 cyl. Vega. He was living in the snow belt off of Lake Huron on the bottom of the Bruce Peninsula at the time. The Vega had a very interesting fault in its design. The tie rod ran through the front suspension cross member. On the long straight runs on the rural roads the cross member would fill up with slush and then freeze. When you got to a corner where you wanted to turn, the tie rod would barely move, but it would move just enough to put you into the ditch. There wasn't enough time to correct. That caused some strange driving driving because you had to stop before the corner and thrash the steering wheel back and forth to clear the frozen slush. Poor design, as was the all aluminum block.
When we lived in the snow belt between Mount Forest and Alliston we bought (probably 1974) a Chevette. The timing belt was guarded underneath with a plastic shield specifically designed to pick up and pack snow into itself! I suppose the  design team lived in sunnier climes….Bang Head
Larry (BRAKIE): Long time no see! Welcomeback
Jim: Thanks for the turnout progress photo – encouraging to see a work space with the kind of clutter which accumulates on mine!Black Eye
(by Ken) MIA Not sure if I am worried about either one. I would think Barry wife would let us know it there was something really wrong, well I hope. Was'nt his band ready to go on tour? Far as Galaxy, not the first time he has not dropped off the site. Stll be great to here from them!
I think you are correct about Barry / Audrey. However, I’m more concerned about Galaxy as he mentioned the possibility of an imminent relationship breakdown.
Dennis:
I snagged the molding on the side of the door on a bush and tore it off.
The strip of molding on the rear passenger door of our Kia Soul2 drifted off when I lost an argument with a buggy corral back in the winter. It was twisted and the studs are gone. However, wintering over in the trunk has straightened it out, so it fits nicely again. I’m figuring that I can re-attach it with a waterproof goop which will squeeze into the stud holes and keep everything sealed and firm. Is this doomed to failure anyone?
Alvie: 68 cars in HO, impressive. I’m pretty sure I’ve not enough track in my N layout to get those in between turnouts!  Must look good though.Thumbs Up
Ray: Loved the Roger H Lincoln quote…
LION:
Today’s Sticky Buns have Raspberry Filling with Walnuts.
(That’s Sunday, so I’m catching up) – Never come across SBs with nuts and jam before. Cinnamon and sugar seems to have been standard fare thus far. All now off the list because of the sugar, but a boy can dream!
Mike: Can’t recall meeting you, but good to have you drop by.
Reinhard: That derailment didn’t make it into our TV news, which relishes disasters. So let’s hope it wasn’t that serious. Angel
Ken:
Sure wish we had a contact that we could use to make sure.
I’ve written the funeral home and asked them how we might do personal messages to Audrey and the family. They’ve replied with this :
Hi john. They can send the family condolences or pictures to www.brockandvisser.com Regards  John Brock
Ulrich: A 5 car starter set! That’s pretty generous. Your harbour layout looks like it has a pile of fun in operations! I figured it was Z from the SCARM Marklin turnout format Whistling
I’m trying to get hold of the Marklin steam 060 starter set and have been watching the Bay. I contacted one seller in Germany with a question (about the power source as his description and photos did not match) He hasn’t deigned to reply…. I need the loco for the N3n line (with a Peco shell which is designed for that loco chassis. ) The cars will sacrifice their trucks for the passenger cars I plan to scratch build, or buy as 3D printed shells.
The Yard Wars theme caught my eye as Charlie next door had a tree surgeon (aka old geezer with a pole mounted electric chain saw) at his place trimming dead branches. Charlie had just gone off with a trailer load when I caught the TS’s attention. He thought perhaps I was going to complain about the noise – which was minimal even close up. What I wanted was for him to trim a couple of the live branches which had grown out over out veggie bed. He said “No problem” and I said “So long as it’s OK with Charlie”  He said – “Consider Charlie consulted” and proceeded to do a very nice job of lopping off the offending limbs.  Great neighbourhood.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the folks up at Fort McMurray evacuated from the fires which have destroyed much of the city. 88000 evacuated with no casualties. A blessing in troubled times.Angel

Good evening.

Cup o' mud please during a few minutes rest.  Working till 23:00 again today (like yesterday) in cold, damp, rainy conditions at IAD.  Do not enjoy these late hours anymore.

DER - no injuries resulted (thank God) from the CSX derailment on Sunday; maybe that is the reason it did not make it in your news.  Not sure how many cars derailed, track was torn-up, and several commuter trains had limited service on Monday and Tuesday.

YGW - hope all goes well on Saturday.  Sounds like it's going to be a great time.  Enjoy.

All the best.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, a cup of hot chocolate would be good right now...  Huh?  Oh  That's right, I have bloodwork first thing in the morning and need a 12 hour fast...  OK, just make that a cup of decaf, that shouldn't do anything bad.

Got 3/4 of the lawn mowed today.  Could have finished it this evening, but I ran out of energy before the batteries for the mower did....  I did get a chance to talk to the son of the lady across the street about what is going on with the selling of the house.  I don't think I mentioned earlier that a few days ago I found out that the house is being bought by a Pys Ed teacher I worked with for 19 years at the Middle School.  He transfered to the High School after I retired and was Athletic Director for the Schools for several years.  We always got along great and it is a very nice family (I taught two of his kids) so I am thrilled to have him moving into the neighborhood.  I think I got a compliment through the grapevine.... He told several people that he loves the neighborhood up here and he said, "Ray H. lives right across the street from where we will live!"  There are several teachers (working and retired) in this part of the city and it is a great neighborhood.  Very glad they will be across the street from me!

Talking with the son, I asked where his Mom is moving to?  He said they had tried every Senior Living Center in Geneva that has independent living appartments and there were no openings in the places she wanted to be....  The day the house sold they checked back with her first choice and found they now have one appartment that opened up.  They signed for it on the spot!  It is a block away from here.  She wanted to be near her sister and BIL who live across the other street from me.....  I also asked what will happen to the 110lb. Pit Bull she has.  He is a sweet dog and very gentle and friendly.  I have mentioned him in here before.  Of course she won't be able to take him with her.  The son looked sad when I asked and told me the old boy is 14 years old, is deaf, going blind, and has trouble walking now (I have noticed the later..) so when she leaves in mid June the dog will have to be put down....  He said the dog is in constant pain (but not terrible yet) so this will be a good time to have it done if he makes it that long.  The dogs father was owned by the son and he also had the same problems and was put to sleep at age 14.  That is old for such a huge dog, but still sad.

OK, back to packing for the convention.  I bought some new casual duds, that I need to try on before I pack them to make sure they fit right.

Later!

Ken

There are around 30 B&O hoppers listed. Various manufacturers. They are $1 each and if they combine with my order which is over $100 you will qualify for an additional 20% less, or .80 cents each. Not sure how many are still available. They are manufactured  Stewart, Athearn, MDC....Will know more tomorrow.

Sir Madog

I spent the money I gor from my Ebay sales and bought a Marklin Z scale starter set - the start for my little briefcase layout! I have been playing with it since we cleared the table after lunch and I am thoroughly enjoying myself.

Here are some pics of my new acquisition:

The loco has just about the size of my ring finger! And it´s got the typical Marklin smell i remember from my first train set!

Ulrich, Ol' Buddy,

After watching your video I think that is going to end up being a very large BRIEFCASE...

Congrats on the new equipment.

Good Morning!

A bright and  beautiful day with temperatures at about 15°C . my day!

Petra decided to display a grim face - too much train action in our apartment. There is this huge (3 by 5 ft.) layout right behind me and now a temporary set-up on the dining table. Fortunately, that Z stuff is reasonably quiet when running, unlike the Bemo locos, who have a distinctive growl when run with a PWM controller. The Marklin loco sounds more like an insect zooming in for the kill.

John - beware of used Marklin Z scale locos. Older ones have that dreadful 3-pole motor in them, which has only two speeds - too fast and way too fast. The 5-pole motor is around for about 8 years now. The Marklin powerpack is also no good, as it does not allow for a smooth control of the speed. I won´t be using it on my layout (or just  as a source of power for the switch motors and lights).

Big - yes, but large, no! The layout is 2 by 2 ft., so let´s settle on the term suitcase layout .

Now it´s off to running trains ...

Have a good one!

Well, I found myself in Surrey BC on Tuesday but did not visit PWRS as was lacking in funds... did park directly below the Skytrain when having dinner, though.

Found out that large sheets of 1-inch Owen-Corning Foamular XPS are either a well-kept secret or not being marketed in NW Washington any more.  Will bite the bullet and go to Home Depot and see what they have... the website listed 2x2 foot sheets.

Have some track cleaning to do, too.  But mostly it's track planning.  Remember the old-style track plans in MR?  Followed one a bit too closely and forgot that N scale is NOT half HO scale: that 4.4 percent difference matters!

A great day to you all!

I had this type of senior moments a number of times. Now I try to plan as precise as possible, only to find out that things don´t necessarily work out the way I have planned them. While a large layout may offer sufficient room for corrections, a small layout usually doesn´t.

Such is life as a model railroader:

I made some minor modifications to my plan - the key one being the addition of a detachable "fiddle yard" used for staging. I also included a couple of uncoupling tracks. If I´d find an easy way to convert the Marklin stuff to MT Z scale couplers, I would not need them, but, alas, there is no easy way!

It´s a quiet day today, Ascension Day and Father´s Day, a public holiday, meaning all businesses are closed.

Flo, is it OK for me just to finish my Coffee? Lunchtime is ahead of us, and Petra´s stewing something smelling awfully nice.

Good morning from a damp NW PA. Rain showers, but low to mid 50's F.

Flo, I will take two eggs, bacon and toast, with a huge OJ, please.

For those of you who railfan: NS 22K has 1068 (Erie RR Heritage unit) still. (Over 2 weeks now on 22/23K.) Last I heard, she was west of Cleveland, Eastbound for Ayer, Mass. (22K is Chicago/Ayer Intermodal, 23K return trip Ayer/Chicago, for those curious.) My work schedule will be in the way today though... (Am I allowed to actually say work?)

On the canon, neighbor fires it off, on average, 3-4 times per week. (He has more money than he knows what to do with...) Gets annoying, especially when he does it, seemingly, 0-dusk-30, right after sunrise... I didn't realize I had ordered a booming wake-up call... (Not all the time is sunrise, that occurs about once every month... But that is once too many for me. Wink)

Well, all have a good day!

Lunch anyone ?

Hey all. Raining again for the umpteenth day ! Creeks are starting to spill over their banks here !

Ricky geez that is just rude ! Before sunrise ? I think I would sneak over at night and perform a covert operation and spike that cannon ! Is there a noise ordinance where you live ?

Ulrich - my "puter" is having issues with the new updates and as soon as they get it fixed I will look at the plans closer. How do you see to rail Z scale ?

BPhil - LOL "N is not half of HO scale" caught me off guard with that statement.

Howmus - good luck with blood test. Don't let the vampires take to much ! They are going to put the dog down just because they are moving ? What about a rescue league ? Man that is awful. In reference to having to make that call about injuries unfortunately in my industry I have had to make it more times than I care to. It leaves a lasting impression on oneself and is very sobering in its effects on you. I have had a person get killed, one person injured for life, many requiring an ambulance ride to stitch something back together or back on....I hate that part of my duties. It always happens when I am off site and someone takes a shot cut in my absence.Grumpy

Reinhard - I am looking forward to Saturday ! I have a copy of the recent local would you like for me to scan it and email it over ? It will have to be after they fix the Microsoft glitches I am having.

Johnboy - Howdy !

Der - what about using YOH rolling pin ? Whistling Is that Cuda Kens engine being pulled ?

V8 - I can't say that I am sorry about Verizon being bought out. Not a big fan of them. Some other day I will relay some nightmares we have to deal with them.on in reference to w**k. They are a NIGHTMARE.

Jim - isn't it crazy ! I bought some vegetable plants and had to flip a coin on whether the fruit produced would out weigh the cost of the plant !

Lion What !? I thought Lions loved that African heat with weeks on end over 100 degrees !

Batman - isn't strange. Every time we replace a dryer or washer my wife acta so embarrassed by the dirt trapped under there. I am thinking What ? You can't get under there why be embarrassed !?

Richard - 100 degrees already ! Oh geez I don't like heat. That's pretty impressive. Man you better hope that thing doesn't pop loose it will take your head off as it heads for the moon !

Ken call me when you get a chance about the B&O stuff.

Afternoon everyone,

Sun is trying to peek out from behind the clouds every once in a while.  Got the Vampire Visit over with.  She did a good job, and no bruising so far.  Had the #2 Special down at Water St. Café just like I order once oin ahile in here.  Came home answered some important emails (the unimportant ones i just deleted), and went out and finished mowing the lawn.  I will finish the basic packing for the convention this afternoon, do a load of wash, and bake some cookies to take with us on our way to the Convention.

They are going to put the dog down just because they are moving ?

No. no!  YGW, the dog is probably getting another month to hang around.  The vet said he was in pain and it soon would be time to put him to sleep....  The family just decided the best timing was when the lady moves.  As much for the lady that owns the dog as for the dog.  It is his time......  He now just hobbles around the yard. He used to run all day long out there.  For them everything fell into place within a few days of each other.  She loves that 110 lb. Pit Bull and since she can't take him to where she will be living and he is not long for the world anyway.........  This way the dog won't be grieving for her...... Sigh

A Little History for Those Who May Not Know...

Most people don't know that back in 1912, Hellmann's mayonnaise was manufactured in England.  In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York.

This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico.... But as we know....the great ship did not make it to New York....The ship hit an iceberg and sank .... and the cargo was forever lost....

The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery .... were disconsolate at the loss....

Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning which they still observe to this day.... The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th.... and is known....of course....as Sinko de Mayo....

Hope you all have a great day!

Well, after a number of tries on my test board, I have decided to give up on cutting the rails with my Dremel-like tool. I would get one good cut, then one horrible cut. Add to this that the small N-Scale track is relatively unforgiving, and it is not worth the risk. I have been taught "anything worth doing, is worth doing right," so I am pulling up the sections of track and doing it right, in my case, using insulated joiners.

Flo I'll have a can of WD-40 I am starting to rust.  The rain continues but 100 degrees, no thanks.  If I ever talk the wife into moving to Prescott, you can come visit and get out of that heat.

Have been to Antietam, Gettysburg and Monocacy many times.  I didn't realize Gettysburg was a national destination until the Park Ranger at the Eisenhower farm asked people where they were from.  They built a new vistors center at Gettysburg.  It's the difference in size between a small town library and a Costco, and very well done.  Monocacy I just discovered a couple years ago.  It is the battle you never learned about in school that saved DC.

On the trainfront, I had to realign a turnout a glued down with caulk.  I got it off but it did not pop off as easily as what I expected from my reading in the forum.  I've got feeders to attach, but it's cold and damp and I think I'll just crawl under the covers for the rest of the afternoon.  The dreary weather just zaps my energy.

Ah yes the weather guy has nothing but Sun icon's for the next week. Fair day on Saturday should be very busy, which means $$$$$ for the school. Just about to hop on the Deere for an hour or so and cut up all the dogs tennis balls, bones and other things that they never put away and are hidden in the tall grass.Whistling

YGW, In Canada we have $1.00 and $2.00 coins along with all the other usual ones. The wife puts the coins she finds in pockets on the top of the washer and of course they fall off from the vibration during the spin cycle. Well we found $27.35 under that monster washer. It went right into my "Rapido Royal Hudson" fund bucket.Thumbs Up

Ran a diognostic on the washer before I went to the parts store just to make sure there was nothing else going on. We had 2229 loads in seven years. The high # is because we wash a lot of hockey jerseys after tournements are held along with a ton of dog related stuff. Everyone can always tell when I wash the jerseys as they are all just thrown back into all the hockey bags in a jumbled heap. When my wife washes them they are all placed in the bags neatly folded. All the hockey Moms give me a hard time as they always know when the wife has washed them all.The washer pump was the first repair and our septic pump lasted 29 years, so we can't complain.

The wife has decided the laundry room must be painted before the washer and dryer are moved back.Indifferent Quick! To the Batcave.............. or in this case the John Deere!

Greetings everyone ... I'm finally crawling out from under tax season and studies.  The renovations are nearing completion, and eager to move south (to the basement).  My home office is taking shape, and I think that the new desk will be great - still need to unload and assemble.  Hopefully the new train layout (N) will fit above the filing cabinets.  Trying to get to some of the neglected yard work now.

I have read the diner posts for May, so I'm caught up.  :(

Batman - I don't know where you reside in BC, but how far are you from the Shuswap?  (ps - I love it when a river or lake falls off the edge of the layout - painted puddle on the floor :) )

mocha-to-go please, and thanks.

back in a bit.

cheers, krump

Hi Krump

We are SE of Vancouver in the agricultural belt, close to the U.S. border. The road on the left is in the U.S. the road on the right is in Canada. The grass down the middle is the fortyninth.

We often get to Scotch Creek camp ground and I have a cousin that use to be at the Salmon Arm detatchment of the RCMP that I would visit often. Use to go on patrol with him sometimes, especially when he would go into the back country. Interesting line of work to be sure.

John Deere had a flat tire but like the Dad in Christmas Story I had it fixed so fast It would have been worthy of using a stop watch! I just realized I still have a lot of logs to move from our monster double cherry that fell down before I can cut the back forty.Indifferent

Good Afternoon Diners,

Flo, I'll have my usual extra large cup of coffee with lots of cream, please.

Dug out my locomotives to put in a new container.  Really made me wish I had the time to build a layout.

Sad

I too have been to both Gettysburg and Antietam.  Just unbelievable carnage.  For Gettysburg, there were 58000 casualties in three days.  That's as many as we lost in the entire Viet Nam war!  For Antietam, there were over 25000 casualties in one day.  To look at the corn field, a distance of about 300-400 yards that changed hands about 5  times and bodies were stacked on top of each other from the charges. Just look at that and wonder what kind of people could go into that kind of Miele?  What was going on in those guys minds knowing they were facing almost certain death.

Then there was blood alley in which the Union troops charged over a rise that made them visible less than 50 yards from the Confederate troops positioned behind the embankment.  Again, it was said that one could walk from one end to the other of the alley and not touch the ground.

On a more positive note, the weather is warming up.  One thing I love about spring is that everything is in bloom and the grass is sooo green.

Hello to all, YGW, Ulrich, John Boy, Lion, Ken, and everyone else.

I hope everyone is OK, safe, and warm.

Less is more,...more or less!

Bang Head Afternoon Dinners Bang Head

Flo, Beer please and a Barry Buger.

Bang Head What is the head banging about you ask? Went to Lowes and picked up the 10 new 1" X 8" X 8' lumber for starting the fence repair. Use a strapdown roof rack on the Towncar to get it home. Got the lumber into the backyard and was getting ready to paint it. Hum, looks a little wider than what is on the fences? Bang Head Checked and the fence has 1" X 6" X 8' foot slats! Bang Head Man, I wish I had checked before I took all the lunber into the back yard! Better yet, I now have to store the lumber in the train room / garage before I take it back. I trip over anything now that I have to ware the Rocker Sole Shoes. Well it could be wores, I could have painted it first!

YGW Good talking to you today. Looking forward to the new B&O coal cars. I really don't know why I want them, but I am a sucker for anything B&O and Monon! B&O does seem easier to get.

Credit Card Front Have a CITI Bank Double Cash Back Card coming. Yes Big Smile REason I am happy about it is my no intrest time on the Captial one card runs May 7th. Transfering my blances to avoid the intrest.

Flo A big piece of chocolate cake.

Ulrich, I could never get past the bare basics of Scarm

Batman  How on earth do you determine 2229 cycles?  Our washer died on the fill part of the rinse cycle.  The trickle of water overflowed and took out the basement ceiling, wall, carpet and the wood floor in 2 upstairs rooms.

Silver dollars used to be quite common when I was a kid.  They took the silver out and made them almost indistiquishible in size to quarter so they are rare.  I honestly don't know whether 1/2 dollars still exist.  I tried to pay with one (silverless) and the cashier wouldn't take it, she never saw one before.

UP Bloody Lane it was called.  At first the Rebs had the drop on the Yankees because they were hidden in the "sunken lane"  Once the Feds figured it out, they flanked the lane, and then shot straight down it.  I don't want to post grisly pictures but for those interested they can go to this site.

Good Evening Diners!  Rain here last night and drizzle for most of the day. Dreich, as the Scotts have it.
At least the rain-butts are full (but the soil is so cold yet that we won’t have anything new to water for some time).
YGW:
Der - what about using YOH rolling pin ?
Actually that wouldn’t be as good (being plastic and one has to fill it with water for a decent heft – I think the idea is that cold / chilled water helps with the pastry dough) as the Plan B I thought of last night which is a small diameter jam jar. Low tech, but nice and smooth.
Is that Cuda Kens engine being pulled ?
– I doubt he’d be very amused – looks like the kind of rig one might expect of Jerry!
BTW, that photo was oversized despite being Photobucket hosted. I’ve now resized it – but I’m not seeing any “EDIT” button. What’s with that? Is  it just me or don’t you have an EDIT function either – Anyone?
(to Ulrich) How do you see to rail Z scale ?
– there is a re-railer tool just like the N ones, but smaller. I picked one up in a job lot of N things at a train show once.
Richard:
Well, after a number of tries on my test board, I have decided to give up on cutting the rails with my Dremel-like tool. I would get one good cut, then one horrible cut. Add to this that the small N-Scale track is relatively unforgiving, and it is not worth the risk. I have been taught "anything worth doing, is worth doing right," so I am pulling up the sections of track and doing it right, in my case, using insulated joiners
– Which brand of joiners Richard. I ask because Atlas look horrible (IMHO) until trimmed to thin them down, and then painted. Peco fit their turnouts handily enough; but are a bit of a pain on Code 80 rail. If you are Code 55 probably no problem – but I’ve no experience with that.  I find there is always a little dulling of the joys when a planned method just doesn’t work out – but you gave it a more than casual attempt, so there’s that to be happy over. Bow
Brent:
The wife puts the coins she finds in pockets on the top of the washer and of course they fall off from the vibration during the spin cycle. Well we found $27.35 under that monster washer. It went right into my "Rapido Royal Hudson" fund bucket.
YES! Mind you I’m awed at the total – I’d have thought she would have pocketed it as she went along…All we found when our washer was repaired  (3 days shy of the warranty expiration)were 3 odd socks!
Ulrich:
John - beware of used Marklin Z scale locos. Older ones have that dreadful 3-pole motor in them, which has only two speeds - too fast and way too fast. The 5-pole motor is around for about 8 years now. The Marklin powerpack is also no good, as it does not allow for a smooth control of the speed. I won´t be using it on my layout (or just  as a source of power for the switch motors and lights).
Thanks for the heads up – I’m after NIB a starter set – but shall ask about date of manufacture if I ever find a candidate.  Also, the description may mention the motor poles. Faint memories persist of 5 pole being a feature on the one in which I was interested. Come to think of it, it’s probably a good thing that I didn’t hear back as other financial commitments have eaten away at the funds available for that project. Doubtless, when the time is ripe, the right set will appear. The Zen of Zed? (USA diners won’t get that as readily perhaps as would the Brits and Commonwealth members) On the power pack, the set I’m after is battery operated – I don’t know if you have an opinion on the quality of those packs? 9volt pure DC sounds good for those small motors. But it does depend on the throttle itself doesn’t it.
If I´d find an easy way to convert the Marklin stuff to MT Z scale couplers, I would not need them, but, alas, there is no easy way!
It’s a compromise I’m just having to live with when that time comes as well.  Swapping out MTs or Altas couplers for the Rapidos with which much of the rolling stock I can afford comes equipped is painful enough in N (I generally have done this with Atlas or MT trucks – changing the wheels to metal at the same time.)  In Z, ( for the N3n) I was thinking of letting sleeping dogs lie.
Ricky W: That neighbour sounds like a real pest. What’s his problem? Retaliation in kind obviously isn’t going to solve anything, and besides it would also be work!  I was also wondering with YGW about noise ordinances (no pun intended!)
Krump:
Hopefully the new train layout (N) will fit above the filing cabinets.
That would bee too low for here – the cat would be all over the layout. I’m at 48” – or maybe your cabinets are the 4 drawer ones.
Ken:
Transfering my blances to avoid the intrest.
LOL – where we were before moving to where we are now there was a chap who pretty much financed his house through playing Credit Card roulette! I haven’t that kind of nerve!
Tea Time by the sounds of it upstairs. Goodnight all.

Der: They are Peco joiners on Peco code 55 track.

If I had known it would be this easy to do it right, I would have done this a long time ago. I have pulled and replaced all of the track and joiners and it turned out great. The next task is to re-secure the track.

YGW & DER,

As we are "out in the sticks" there is no real noise ordinance, the only way to handle it is by making a complaint to local PSP (Pa State Police) station, and hope they have an officer in the area to actually hear it, then something can be done. While the neighbor the other side of him from me did complain once, it hasn't stopped, just become more sporadic... It had been the same day, same times, each week, Every Tuesday @5-10 mins before/after sunrise, during the last of the "blue hour" for those of you who are amateur photographers, Wednesday at noon, then Thursday near 10:00 am, and sometime around 1:00pm (13:00) on Fridays, or Saturday nights around sunset if he skipped Friday, but now, it's whenever he feels like hurling cannonballs around his property... Still multiple times in a row when he does it, but no real pattern anymore to it. (I could set my watch by it before, but now, after 5-0 was out once, who knows when he's going to do it next...)

I actually was just down at the PSP station this afternoon, unrelated matter, as some idiot from another state (according to caller ID) kept calling my cell today and cussing at me, no clue who he is or why he's upset... He claimed I kept calling him all day, bugging him, about who knows what, but I was at w**k... I really think he had the wrong number, but.... I did warn him I would file a report if he kept calling. He did, so I reported... The officer seems to think it's someone I know pranking me, but I don't recognize the voice. And the idiots language was extremely unfit to repeat.

And it is not the neighbor... I know his voice. We stay on friendly terms, so I don't end up with a cannonball in my living room.... Wink

Although, that would allow a nice remodel job to occur.... Whistling

YGW, Enjoy the trip!

Howmus, I love the "sinko-de-mayo" explanation.... Good job! Big Smile Big Smile Big Smile Big Smile Big Smile

Cudaken, sorry you are having so many issues with the fence... And the neighbor. I would say we are in the same "boat", but that just might get us both shot at.... Smile Wink

Ulrich, can you please, define just what "too much train" means? I just really don't think those words go in the same sentence like that.... nice plan for the suitcase though. I knew I had been using mine wrong all these years! Whistling

Flo, I will take a slice of apple pie, to go please.

Hi folks:

I'm sure you have all heard by now about the Fort McMurray wild fire in northern Alberta. As of about 10:00 am this morning 88,000 people had been evacuated and 1,600 buildings had been lost. This is the biggest natural disaster in Canada's history.

If you are so inclined, the Federal and Alberta governments have both offered to match all donations to the Canadian Red Cross. If you put in $25.00 your donation will be worth $75.00, and, if you are from the US, that will actually be a little over $96.00 Cdn.

https://donate.redcross.ca/ea-action/action?ea.client.id=1951&ea.campaign.id=50639

Hundreds of families have been left with not much more than the clothes on their backs.

Thanks for your help.

Good Evening all,

it was a busy day, but I accomplished getting the workstation desk into my office and assemble (huge).  Need to begin the office move in the days ahead.

Der - the desk comes with filing cabs, but I have other lateral cabinets that will fit in the old closet, and the train could go abouve them at a bout 50".  There is a foundation shelf at about the 50" height.

if I build a corner, I could also have about 25 linear feet of a "G" scale point to point, along 2 walls in the room ??? hmm

Batman- is that Zero Avenue ? in Richmond, Tsawwassen area maybe?  I spent 26 yrs in Corrections: Probation/ Parole / Social Work etc in Langley, Surrey, Salmon Arm (home office now for bookkeeping).  I am familiar with the SA Detachment, and did many ride-alongs myself.  We moved from Abbotsford to Tappen (near SA) in 2001.  I have a JD160 Lawn Tractor to keep things manageable.  I've been camping at Scotch Creek a few times.  When you are back in the area, you should stop in at the Salmon Arm Model Railroaders Association.  I get down to the coast several times a year - probably next in June.

hon30critter - thanks for noting the Fort Mac fire(s).  Absolutely devastating.  One friend said the it was Hell on earth, that's what I was thinking also.  I have 4-5 friends that were working there (one being a former social worker colleague of mine), they are safe and getting out.  it's terrible, the town is basically destroyed, and someone told me tonight that the sq mileage covered by the fire is about the size of the City of Calgary.  I haven't seen that suggested anywhere, but it is big.  Prayers needed for the residents, rescuers, fire fighting personnel ...

that is the EXIT out of town - yikes

Cudaken and V8Vega - sounds like we need to chat about cars and trains (1964 El Camino - given away by my avatar.

Hello to others as I get re-aquainted and caught up after my lengthy absence - Madog (n scale plans progressing), YGW, Howmus, and fec (been a long time), and some that I am just starting to get to know.  Cowboy

Yardwork tomorrow.  Stay safe everyone.

cheers, krump

Lunchtime!

Chloe, I´ll have the burger, fries & salad dish and make everything Barry-sized, please.

I am waiting for a few pieces of track to arrive, so no work yet done on the little layout. I need to have the track complete before I can start on the benchwork - need to locate the cut-out for the harbor properly. I´ll be making the benchwork together with my friend Claus again - to save Petra from getting the fits if I do it here.

With nothing better to do I worked on the details of the drawing. It´s not that difficult, but requires a lot of thinking ahead when drawing a structure, as you have to draw it in 2D mode and assign each element the proper height. Took me quite some time to figure that one out when I started to use SCARM, but now I am quite handy with it. Too bad the software cannot draw inclines, but that will come in a later release.

Well here´s today´s crop:

Good morning ....... It's Derby weekend. We will stay away from Louisville. Too many people.

However, I will have a Barry-sized portion of Derby Pie. Nothing tastes better.

Dave (HOn3 Critter) ..... Yes, the tragic wildfire is on the news in the US. You Canadians can count on friends in the US to donate to the Red Cross as you suggested. ....

The Red Cross helped in a disaster in Kentucky a few years ago. It was the 2009 ice storm which crushed entire forests, stranded people in their houses, caused massive power outages, etc. . In our case, broken trees blocked our road, and we were stranded in our house with no power, no land-line phone, no cell-phone, and no county water for 9 days. Other people in our area went 3 to 4 weeks with no power.

Ulrich ... The layout plan looks fantastic.

Mornin' everyone...

Zoe, I just need a refill for my mug of dark roast coffee before I head out the door to Ottawa for the NFR Regional Convention this weekend.  Hopefully everything I need is packed.

Will be taking 4 photos to enter in the Contest, got my camera all charged up and in the case with my several different lenses, CPAP is taken apart and put in it's case to take....   Let's see what else do i need?  OH!  Better put my Passport in my shirt pocket to get accross the border!  OK, even packed some home made cookies to snack on during the drfive to Canada.

Have a great weekend everyone.  I'll be back whe  I get home!
