In the attempt to get my mind set on something positive, i fired up my track planning tool and designed a really small ( 2 by 2 ft.) layout depicting a harbor scene - in Z scale!

I guess this one will be actually built - commissioned by a friend of mine. Something to look forward to!

Steve - I have to disagree with you on the fishermen. Every fisherman knows that fish like to be around structures whether man made or natural. Lots of people fish piers that support bridges. I used to live within a 1/4 mile of an old bridge ( built pre civil war ) and there was always someone fishing, swimming or canoeing by it. But it is your RR do as you think best.

V8 - Frontier phone ? What is that ?

Ken - what are the laws regarding the pool fence in your area ? Are they required ?

Howmus - it's not to keep people from seeing through the fence but to keep kids from Trespassing and possibly drowning

Lion - really ! Who has ever heard of a fence around Gods watering holes with tasty wildebeast drinking and just waiting for a hungry Lion to feast on their juicy steaks ! Just not natural !

Jim - you are welcome for the Trex info.

YGW .. If you do decide to model a military train, the ones  I see going in and out of Fort Campbell have piggyback flat cars. They are painted yellow and look like TTX cars but they have DODX reporting marks.

This law is basically the same for swimming pools in the whole US

One final comment on my part:

The Train

At birth we boarded the train and met our parents, and we believe they will always travel on our side. However, at some station our parents will step down from the train, leaving us on this journey alone.

As time goes by, other people will board the train; and they will be significant i.e. our siblings, friends, children, and even the love of our life. Many will step down and leave a permanent vacuum.

Others will go so unnoticed that we don't realize they vacated their seats. This train ride will be full of joy, sorrow, fantasy, expectations, hellos, goodbyes, and farewells.

Success consists of having a good relationship with all passengers requiring that we give the best of ourselves.

The mystery to everyone is: We do not know at which station we ourselves will step down. So, we must live in the best way, love, forgive, and offer the best of who we are. It is important to do this because when the time comes for us to step down and leave our seat empty we should leave behind beautiful memories for those who will continue to travel on the train of life.

I wish you a joyful journey on the train of life. Reap success and give lots of love. More importantly, thank God for the journey.

Lastly, I thank you for being one of the passengers on my train.

This was given to me after my last stay in the hospital and it really helped put things in perspective.

Afternoon folks,

Just lit the grill outside to cook myself a small hamburger for supper.  That will go along with a nice garden salad vegetable and fruit...

Mea Culpa!  I looked up NYS codes and the local town codes and found a solid fence is not at all required for any side around a pool.  I was thinking there was some requirement here in the city and town that the front side of the pool if seen from the street has to be solid.  Not sure where I got that idea from.  Most of the pools here in the city do have picket fences but there are two in the neighborhood in the back of the houses that have chain link...  YGW  I do know the purpose of the barrier is to prevent drownings!  I was a Boy Scout Camp director for 3 years and was very much trained in what has to be done and why.  First thing they teach you is how to spell LIABILITY!

I have been multitasking most of the day.  Started packing for the trip to Canada, went down to Super Casuals (locally owned clothing store) and bought some new duds for the trip, started to gather all the stuff together I will need, and made of checklist of items I have tpo take with me....  (Passport....., Meds...., etc.)  Sent out a few emails on info I need for the program for the Scholarship dinner.  Spent time on the phone with the other commissioner for the handicapped units on some things that are not coming together like we had hoped....

Have a great evening out there!

Ricky - I have  coworker from PA and he tells me that PA is loaded with "rebel wannbe's" he said they hang out the Confederate battle flags etc....have you seen much of that ? I find that surprising.

YGW,

Yes, lots of them... My neighbor is one. He also has a stinking canon. I don't mind the semi-automatic guns, or the battle flags, but that flipping canon shakes the whole house! And, he lives ~400-500 yards away... First time he shot it off I thought his house exploded! (The police were actually called out once, someone was sure some bomb went off one time...)

Lots of "jacked-up 4-wheel drives", and all kinds of camo. (Some are camo colored jacked-up trucks!) Most of them drive like they was qualifying for a NASCAR race as well... Drives me nuts!

Some of them are really nice folks, others are as flat out crazy as they look.

And, one that I used to work with, looks just like the guys from Duck Dynasty... We had a promotion once with a cut-out of "Uncle Sy", (Si?) and when Jeff put his sunglasses on, flipped his cap backwards, and stood next to him, he was a perfect fit!

My new job, at a clothing retailer, is going through prom season right now. The most popular tux rental? Camo... Next favorite is blaze orange vests and ties. Then comes your standard black/white/navy blue tux's. Crazy folks! Camo tux rental is 179, plus shoes, shirts, and any other "extras", then fees and taxes, and we recommend the damage waiver, which is an additional fee, for all. Black tux remtal? 59-79, depending on vest and tie color.

Some people are that crazy...

And, our camo shoes sell out faster than we can unpack them.

So yes, lots of the "rebel wannabees" in my area.

Flo- I will take a nice chicken pot pie, and a glass of lemonaid please.

Steve,

The biggest fish are always around a pier, or other object, submerged into the water. It allows a nice place to hide. Smaller fish swim by your bigger fish hidey-hole, and you now have a full, happy bigger fish. (Except when said smaller fish is my lure......)

And, if it is a springtime layout, three fisherman is nowhere near enough! Opening day for trout season in my area will have them lined up almost elbow to elbow around bridges and the like... I have seen close to 2 dozen around one at the same time. (And they all wonder why I refuse to go opening day! There's plenty there still.....)

Clichés that should end.... Other than the mandatory tunnel to nowhere just for effect, I honestly can't think of any right now...

I would never have imagined that Rebel was big in PA.  Maryland was a slave state kept in the Union by Federal Troops but not PA.  Growing up close to Gettysburg and Antietam, either battle made D-Day look like a walk in the park.

Even more amazing is camo tuxes.  My father had a men's store and we rented tuxes, from a supplier in Baltimore.  When I was 16, I drove downtown to pick up the tuxes.  I can't remember what they rented for, but I'm thinking around $35 or less.

. . .Richard - would love to hear a "cactus" story bet that is a good one ! . . .

It is a good story to tell, not so good to experience. I was riding down a trail, going a little faster than I should, when I came up on a pair of riders coming up the hill. Trail protocol dictates that a downhill rider yields to the uphill rider, so I started to slow and moved to the right of the trail. Unfortunately, my bike hit a rock and down I went. I put down my hands to stop the fall, right at the base of a cholla cactus. (Pronounced Choy-ya.)

Cholla

A cholla drops those spine-infused balls to the ground and I put both hands into cholla balls. Now a cactus spine does not come to a point, rather it has a little tiny hook at the end that goes into the skin and grabs on. To make matters worse, I had bike gloves that were now attached via spines to my hand. There was nothing I could do, but stand there in pain. (The riders going up did not stop. I honestly don’t think they knew I went down, as I fell behind them.) After a few minutes, a Good Samaritan stopped, and using a pair of bike pumps, (he wasn’t about to use his hands) he removed the spines. The pain was excruciating and my hands were bruised for days afterwards. Within a week, I was back out on the bike.

Evening Diners,

Angel - what I'd it that you are so " picky about" details ? Era ? Brand ?

Well I more into modeling the era and some freight car details, 1987-2006. Although it stops in 2007, I don't buy cars in 07 or late 06. Seeing that the car exists in that moment in time, including paint schemes like tank cars and locomotives to see if changed their numbers or paint.

Railroad cliches ah Steven I can't think of any right now but I remember during my walk.

Train News: I got a little carried away today getting Hanjin containers without the website. Since it doesn't exist during the timeline. (written above). I can't go overboard since I pre-orders and they probably be coming out in May or early June. I got to be careful when spending.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, just a large mug of decaf for me at the moment....

I was on my way out the door to mail a couple things tonight down at the post office and had just unplugged the PiP when A white car pulled up and stopped ion front of my house.  the driver of the car was intent looking at the area between my house and the neighbors house...  He then pulled ahead and did the same thing before driving up around the corner beyond my house....  As soon as I had put the charging cord on the railing of my porch where I usually hang it and went around to the drivers side of the car I saw what he was looking at.

Ran back in the house to get my camera which was on the dining room table...  Ran over to the neighbors yard to get a better photo as the thing had dropped down below the tree line by the time I got back outside.

Got in the PiP and headed up to the top of the street where I could get a better photo of it.

The balloon belongs to the paster of a church at the corner of Pre-emption Rd. and Reed St. which is right around the corner from where I live.  This is the first time I have seen it this year.  It is a single seater and fairly small.  He made the local and regional news last year for taking a dieing gent up for a balloon ride as part of the man's Bucket List.  I think tonight the plan was to set the balloon down at the church and he overshot it...  It looked like he was trying to find a safe place to land nearby as he was almost down and kept hitting the gas burner to get a bit more lift to get over power lines etc.

His tracking crew was right around the corner from where I got the photos and there were about 20 cars alomng the side of the road as well.  I didn't stick around to add to the confusion, but when I got back from mailing the letters there was only one car and one person from the tracking crew still there.  Since there were no emergency crews and sirens while I was downtown, I figure he landed somewhere safely...

Have a great night!

 Evening Dinners

Flo, a Beer and a Barry Buger please.

 Down in the dumps today.

Work sucked rail spikes today so that is covred.

Current Computer is acting up. AVG was not working right and had to restart 3 time's and scaning now to see if there is a issuie.

Newer Computer front. Did get a free hard drive and a Dell XP Pro CD today from Paul (GM at work) so that is good. Big question is when will I have time to format the thing?

Yard Wars I am getting close to saying Caboose this and stick BOS with the house!

What really yanks my chain is my wife started this whole mess! Bang Head Guy a cross lets his Boxer walk around him with out a leash.  Wife say's "Sparkie does not like walking around the backyard, he wants to walk in the front yard"! She is afraid of his Boxer because he is big! Told her not to to call aminal contol, he will calling zoning! You folk's know the rest. Sigh

All so as you folks know I had been cleaning up the backyard for about a year thinking I may have had a chance off keeping the house. I am to the point I think I am fighting a lossing battle. With her on my side, I am screwed.

Good Morning!

The night was terrible! Tried to get some sleep, but gave up on it after two hours listening to the clock tick on the hall. I stayed up for a couple of hours, then gave it a try again. I am now up since 5am, that makes it three hours of sleep and the feeling of having been freight-trained!

I think I will go for a nap after lunch!

Ray - I just can´t figure myself hanging under a ballon like this - I´d probably die! My last heart attack left me with a bad case of vertigo. I am just glad that I can reach neal everything in our place without having to climb up a ladder. Anything more than 2´ above ground is  a no go for me.

Ken - hang in there, pal! I am sure you´ll end up being the winner in your yard war!

Janie, coffee in an IV bag, please!

Tuesday Night Hockey ended in a 14-14 tie, and both of us goalies played well.  Yeah, that's pickup hockey for ya.

More clouds, chilly temperatures and rain.  I'm using the day to do laundry and straighten up.  I'll probably go to the gym for some upper-body time.  My legs are too tired from last night for the dreadmill.

Indeed, I won´t and I have not, at least today.

I decided to change a few things, mainly to do things now and not on one fine day which may never come.

I spent the money I gor from my Ebay sales and bought a Marklin Z scale starter set - the start for my little briefcase layout! I have been playing with it since we cleared the table after lunch and I am thoroughly enjoying myself.

Today is not a wasted day!

Here are some pics of my new acquisition:

... and a first short video:

The loco has just about the size of my ring finger! And it´s got the typical Marklin smell i remember from my first train set!

Morning all.

Flo is there an extra IV hanging around with some french roast coffee. Hook me up like Ulrich. Exhausted. Too much w**k and trying to get the place cleaned up for a huge sales event this week....

Garry - Thanks I will keep that in mind. Do you model military ? I can see so many possiblities with that. From manufacturing delivering supplies to hauling out the new equipment, repair shops that bring back the war damaged equipment or a base with a staging yard....Like you "dont waste it" comment Thumbs Up

Ulrich - here they sell "sleepy time" tea actually works well helping one to get to sleep. Have you tried anything like that ? That does stink.

Ken - There is an estate sale here in teh James River division. They have B&O hoppers for $1 each ( concour ?) . I think they are horn hook but still if you are interested let me know. Have you every sat down with her and just asked her questions why she is the way she is ?

V8 - Frontier bought Verizon ???? Verizon is HUGE. Did Frontier just buy out the local Verizon or the national chain ?

Angel - oooh we all have to be careful when spending...SighBang Head

Richard - Isnt that true of all good stories ? Very painful to live through BUT funny as all get out when related later ! Oh that story does sound PAINFUL OUCH - Hey you know what THAT would make a great scene to model !

Henry - Yea those were some terrible battles. Have you visited the park ? I had a relative, General Garnett who was killed in Pickets charge. He was hit by a yankee cannon ball. I had a friend who took part in the filming of Gettysburg. He said they only had 40 cannons ( I think there were 400 + in the actual battle ) and he said the ground from those 40 made the ground shake !

Ricky - See Steve ! Every fisheman fishes piers at some point ! - I a sorry I am not laughing at you but I laughed at your comments had me rolling on the floor ! Camo tux ??!!! Oh man a CANON ! I bet that is annoying but inside I am thinking HOW COOL IS THAT ! At 400 yards it shakes the house ! Geez that would be unpleasant. I heard it cost $50+ every time it is shot. They cant possible shoot it that much ??? Your comment - "Flat out crazy " - Big SmileBow

Howmus - didnt know you understood. Didnt pick that up from your comments earlier. No disrespect intended.  Yes a lot of people miss the whole "LIABILITY" part. It is very big factor especially when one gets sued.

Doug - Thanks loved "The Train" Thumbs UpThumbs UpThumbs Up

Well this weekend The James river division will have a meet in Palmyra Va. I think I know where I will be spending my Saturday ! Gotta git back to w**k.

Morning diners,

A few days ago I bought an Athearn 48' stack car if I told you about it. So today the seller no longer had it and refunded my full amount of $30.

Ulrich- I have a question. On the Marklin brake van, does it go short or long way? Because it also puzzled me.

Either way - it´s not a brake van (like they used to have in Britain), just a "caboose" or a guard´s van - a place for the conductor. In Germany, the use of guard´s vans ended in the early 1960´s.

Mornin.....  Ahhhhhh....  Hmmmmm.  Afternoon folks!

Chloe, could use a refill of the Marrakesh Express Dark Roast Coffee.  Huh?  Well please make another pot for me.

I've already gotten a day's w*rk done around here.  My son came over to return the Trailer after he bought a new ride on lawn mower.  So far he loves it.  I tied to get one last fall when they were on sale...  I was even willing to give/loan him $1,000 towards it, but was too proud to take it.  He was trying to get another old used, worn out piece of junk to save money and now that his lawn is about a foot high, his other half put her foot down and told him either he goes and buys one he likes or she will go buy one herself!!!  He decided it was better to obey than keep putting it off....

He just was pulling out of the driveway when my phone rang and it was the guy from the Pro Sound Com;pany letting me know the last buses were loading out in front of the Smith Opera House downtown and he will be standing in front of the place in 10 minutes so come cown and get the mic I need...  They had Greg doing sound for a program at the Theater for school kids this morning.  Nothing like get the best in the business to work there.  I picked up the mic, took it over to church, dropped it off, and came back home to deal with about 75 emails.  Some of them were on NMRA Business, so i dealt with that and then had lunch!

didnt know you understood. Didnt pick that up from your comments earlier. No disrespect intended.

None taken....  I believe the concept is called an "Attractive Nuisance"!  Just got an email from my insurance guy about the need to have specific coverage if I had a pool or a trampoline on the property.  Boy Scouts have forbidden trampolines in any form to be used in the program because of injuries and deaths due to them.  IN NYS at least you have to have the same fencing, etc as for pools if you have one (and they recommend the additional insurance).  When I was a Camp Director for the Scouts, the absolute worst thing imaginable was to have to fill out the "Pink Form!"  That is the one used for a serious injury or death in camp.  There is about 10 pages of directives for those things.  I can't imagine having to pick up the phone and say, "Hello Mrs. ---------, there has been an accident here at camp with your son.  He is on his way to such and such hospital.  Please get there as soon as possible."  Especially if we know he is already gone........  The camp Director or a Scout Executive has to make the call.....

Hope all of you have a wonderful day out there!  The sun is trying to peak through a bit before the rain clouds move in this evening.

Wahoo! Today we get our first triple-digit day of the year. (As in over 100F.)

I tuned my second piano. It was my parent's piano and it had not been tuned for years. Needless to say, it was way out of tune--severely flat. This creates an interesting challenge in that changing the tension on all of the strings (there are 230 strings in a piano) causes the harp (cast iron frame) to compress, which in turn causes the piano to go out of tune. The result is the need for multiple tunings over time to bring the piano back into tune.

Fun fact--there are 230 strings in a piano, with an average tension of 160 pounds per string, resulting in just over 18 tons of pressure on the harp. That is the equivalent of 6 Cadillac Escalades. The piano is truly an amazing instrument.

Good morning from the cool wet coast. 12C today. Went and picked up the new washer pump, it is installed and works. YEEEEAAAAA! Of course picking up the pump means a stop at Tims for a cuppa. Underneath the washer and dryer the wife is doing a Archaeological dig right now, These things are so big and heavy they don't get moved out as often as the old top loaders use to.

Have been watching Ken Burns "The West" on Netflicks. Some good RR stuff in it. I think his Civil War series was better, but I am still enjoying this one.

Time to go put new wipers on the truck. They have been riding around on the back seat long enough.Whistling Time they earn their keep. Then maybe I'll go and do something I seldom do and have a nap before somthing else breaks.Laugh

Ulrich, I really like the Z scale.  I think about how much layout I could have if I put a Z scale in the space I have now. Also, for a long time I have wanted to make a Christmas layout for B.C. Childrens Hospital and I always though Z scale might offer up some more possibilities as far as flexibility is concerned.

Have you ever considered doing a layout for a Childrens Hospital in Germany? I find that many MRR vendors are more than happy to donate materials for such a good cause. With your skill you could put a lot of smiles on a lot of little faces. Just a thought.

I tried that some time ago, and the idea was not very well received - for reasons unknown to me. The only explanation I find is that the social climate has cooled off considerably in recent years and civic involvement is only welcomed if it helps to market politicians and politics.

It got up to 78 and that is about 10 too hot for me.

 Afternoon Dinners

Flo, Beer and Barry Buger please.

Worthless day off. Felt like caboose most of the day. I even slept in till 9:00 AM and was still sleepy. Did a little running and at first I felt better, half way throught I was beat. Did not touch the rear fences, and I had high hopes.

YGW Have you bought them all ready? If you have or have not I would like them. Like I need any more rolling stock but I am a sucker for B&O any thing. Let me know when you PM me about them!

Ulrich You really bought Z scale? Confused I thought the reason you did not do N scale any more was because you could not see to work on the stuff? I have only seen one Z Scale layout, well just a bunch of track with train running on it at a train show in Collinsville IL. I was amazed by it and watched it a good 10 minutes.

Computer Front Finally got the AVG Antivirues working right! What shut down was the Identiy Protection while it was up dating. What really had me worried was while AVG was up dating I had looked at my Checking account, Credit Card account and Credit Karma. Before I never worried about some one stealing my Credit Identiy, who would want it? Now I have something to protect. Yes

Did get the hard drive in the newer computer, I may install window's XP tonight. Like to see what the new one can do.

 Later, Guda Ken

Good afternoon, It cooled off about 15 degrees in the last hour and it started sprinkling when the dog and I headed our for her afternoon walk.  It was an abbreviated walk, to say the least.

Went to buy plants for my wife's birthday gift.  Have prices ever escalated on bedding plants this year.  I may have to cut back on what I buy and plant this year. Years ago we started almost all of our bedding flowers from seed in peat pots.  The way prices appear to be heading it may drive me back to starting my own bedding flowers next year.

The fourth turnout is spiked down.  This turnout looks better than the last two.  Practice makes for improved products.  It's time to get with the clean up so more foam subroad bed can be put down.  If it is rainy again tomorrow, I will be cleaning up bench work.

Uhlrich, the harbor layout is pretty neat.  Working in Z scale has to be a challenge.  I have only seen one actual Z scale layout and the scennery possibliity are impressive as you design demonstrates.

Ken, hang in there on the yard wars.  Too bad a neighbor complaint is putting the pressure on for repairs to the fence.  I am in kind of the same position as we have a very old chain link fence with posts that are starting to rust off.  Fortunately my neighbor is willing to help with the removal when it becomes a necessity.  He already pulled up about thirty feet next to his driveway.

The fisherman along bridges issue is kind of funny.  I see people fishing the bridge piers on the Muskingham River road bridges almost every weekend while walking the dog.  We have an old railroad bridge that has been converted to a walking path and people fish the piers of that bridge on the west side of the river.  The east side is a city marina and I have never noticed people fishing around the boat dock.

Time for dinner.  Hope everyone is having a good hump day.

Jim
