Watched an old world war II movie today. 'Go For Broke', the story of the 442nd Infantry regiment. No train related work today. I'm at a standstill. Nothing to work on. My step mother and I had a great meal tonight. Beef Rice-a-Roni with stew meat, chopped onion and diced red bell pepper. Three hours later and I can still smell it throughout the house. Delicious!

Time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

Evening All,

Heartland Division CB&Q
Bear .... Hmmmm ..... Is that whaat might be called a 2-6-0 hauling logs?

Under the UIC classification of locomotive axle arrangements it would be C'C' , or under the Association of American Railroads, C-C. Anyhow 12 driving wheels.

It was designed to haul a working load of 77 tons up 1 in 10 grades, it actually managed a 155 ton test load!!!

Thoughts and Best Wishes to All that need them.

Cheers, the Bear.

morning coffee in the diner....

GOOD WEDNESDAY MORNING!!!

Today is Wednesday, October 9th, 2013!

MAKE IT A GREAT DAY!!!

Today's fun limericks:

Remember when nearly sixteen
On your very first date as a teen

At the movies? If yes,
Then I bet you can't guess

What was shown on the cinema screen.

There was an announcer named Herschel
Whose habits became controversial,
Because when out wooing
Whatever he was doing
At ten he'd insert his commercial.

Odd words:

Pediculous: (pe-DIK-yuh-luhs; adjectiveInfested with lice: lousy; contemptible. Etymology: From pedis (louse). Earliest documented use: 1540

Gongoozler - A person who sits and stares at activity on a canal. This has been now updated  to mean any kind of idle person or rubbernecker.

Polydipsia - Having abnormal thirst

 Used in a sentence:

The pediculous gongoozler sat on the banks of the canal picking at his lice, singing "polly wolly doodle, polydipsia all the day"

{bad, real bad, I know}

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and the breakfast pile please. Thank you.

Sunny, with a high near 75.

YGW- Welcome back and sorry about your wife. Sounds like you’ve been busy though and things are as well as can be. Good luck with the new lady (probably not so new now) sounds like a keeper  to me! And I agree 500K IS impressive. Well done.

Flip- Careful with the back! Get some rest when you can.

Garry- Oh yah, you could have bad luck just about anywhere. I was mainly referring to vehicles under warranty at least for the powertrain. If something goes wrong and they determine it had anything to do with oil, filter or the way it was done, then they can’t say it’s anyone but their authorized people and parts. Also there is their record of the dates and mileages the oil was changed so no dispute there either. After that, it’s just a matter of convenience. This dealership where I bought the truck, has a punch card and every 5th change is free so…dividing that cost into the other four makes them even less than the quick change places.

Today I plan on….oh forget it.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Morning all!Cowboy

Flo my dear, Can I get a pair over easy, toast and bacon please. Oh, and Java in an extra large mug!

I'm surprised I am wide eyed and bushy tailed this morning. Didn't get to bed til 1:45 this morning. After watching the NCIS new episodes last night, SWMBO went to bed at 10. I was a little wired so I went downstairs to work on the Penn Line  2-8-0  that I had started earlier for my LHS. After finishing all the work on the tender, I started on the engine. The motor swap was easy, plug to tender finished. I drilled out the headlight and then went to drill a hole behind the headlamp for wiring. Here's where the wheels came off the cart, and the horse ran away. Surprise Halfway through the 1st hole, the drill bit snapped!Angry  Ok, its not the end of the world`, lets try to run a bit down along side that one, as I did have a little wiggle room. Slowly (and with oil) I started to drill. Got a little farther down than the last attempt, and suddenly SNAP! Super Angry Luckily it snapped off outside of the boiler. Took a little persuasion with Vice Grips to get it out, but it did. Amazing how a 3/64ths drill bit can resist a pair of vice grips.Hmm Then came the problem of finding another suitable drill bit a midnight. Finally found one in the garage of all places. Slowly, again with oil I went in and after several minutes, I had punched through to the boiler! Yeah   Reinstalled the headlamp housing, installed the bulb, ran the wiring and filled the "extra" hole with epoxy and called it a night. When the alarm went off a 5:30, I popped up like a piece of toast!Big Smile

I'll smooth that out later and fix the paint, I've got other fish to fry this morning.

Galaxy, Wouldn't a railfan be considered a Gongoozler?

L8ter gang!

Good morning. It's 53° with 100% humidity. The high will be 82° and will feel like 87°.

USPS tracking shows the motor mounts for the GP50 being in Shreveport. Maybe they'll arrive a day early? If not they'll be here tomorrow. No plans for today except to watch some more old movies. Perhaps 'Corregidor' (1943) Otto Kruger, Elissa Landi, Donald Woods, Frank Jenks and 'Ski Troop Attack' (1960) Micheal Forest, Frank Wolff, Richard Sinatra, Wally Campo.

Good Morning Zoe - I'll have a blueberry bagel with one pat of butter, and a  Rio Grande  mug of the TH, please 'n' thank you, ma'am!

G, and Todd - not to worry, I'm not holding my breath until "the right one" shows up; I have plenty of other stuff to keep myself distracted in the meantime. Wink

And Todd, I hear you about being willing to pay for somebody else to do the oil change/lube thing. But our places here charge more than in your area, I think. Smile, Wink & Grin As for women eating, I kinda knew that women eat at various restaurants - I was thinking you were talking about meeting a woman at an Oriental buffet...Whistling

jeffrey-wimberly

Still at my fathers place. I can't even get up the front steps to mine. I sent you an email regarding the control card.

Back atcha, Jeff. Found one, by the way! (Now, finding a box the right size, since I have enough bubble-wrap and an anti-static envelope that it's in already...) And that's one well-weathered Cotton Belt boxcar there! Thumbs Up Plus, congrats on managing to lose 15 lbs. (despite what your father's guess was...)!BowBow

Bear - that's an interesting (iron) w**horse there.Huh? What's new on your layout, lately?

Ulrich, maybe you should consider sending some articles in to MR, as Galaxy suggested. Could maybe start accumulating some My 2 CentsMy 2 Cents toward moving expenses...? Worth a shot, though.

No offense meant, Ray, but a cat hurling furball/whatever-it-ate-that-didn't-agree-with-it is another reason I don't have cats. (Of course, "your mileage may vary...") How did your cat (Manet or Blackie, whichever was there first) respond when you first brought the new feline home, speaking of how well cats do/don't adapt to new ones in the home? (I do recall BridgeTom having to keep Uff-Dah locked in his spare bedroom for a while to let the other cats get used to him being there at first) Of course, some dogs are every bit as territorial about new dogs showing up in the home, too.

By the way, Ray - can you send us 4 or 5 inches of that excess rain you got? Here, we're still almost five inches shy of our average rainfall for the year. Though we don't look like the dry Southwest, either.

Mr. B., yep, I also know (in my area) two or three couples who met through online services and appear happily married.

YGW, this gal bought you a loco? And apparently she learned what RR(s) you like, too? Does indeed sound like a keeper. Bow You, sir, are blessed! And great to hear about "your daughter's" layout introducing kids to MRR'ing. Good time of the year to plant those ideas in young heads, too...Wink

Johnboy, hope your doctors get things figured out about what they need to do on your mass. That may have come up when I was absent from the Diner. Your son's going to Billings, MT does sound familiar, and that location sounds like a good 'fit' for him (and, it's not so far away as Springfield MO was, too). Keep us posted on the health front, please. The progress on the MRR sounds good. Yeah

Sam, good to hear you are getting a little vacation time. (It always seems like a 'little' if it's vacation, unless one is retired, that is...). Hope you locate your layout design stuff!

Garry, hadn't you heard about Flip's nickname? It was because he would "flip" the page /get the TOP so often! But I think we may have a new leader in the TOP category - Galaxy? or somebody else.

And Flip, I would second the cautions about not overdoing with your back, having managed to get my lower back a little bit out of tune (my own fault) lately, by not enough sleep, and sitting the wrong way for too long. (I know better, and have taken corrections on both, so it's improving). I've heard that people who help with disabled people (or those in nursing homes) often need to be more cautious to not throw something out of whack.

Karl, putting in a decoder *after* someone else started the install, you must be a man of great patience (but then again, you're getting $$$ for your w**k).Smile

Day's going pretty well so far at the office. Managed to get my doctor's appointment next Wed. (a follow-up) moved so I only have to take one hour off w**k that day. Besides, I'll be having CPR and First Aid training that morning (until 1 p.m.).

Yesterday, I got some 3.5 inch disks (for my Apple II's) and a couple IIgs games, as well as scoring on deBay some Revell structure kitbashing parts (Weekly Herald/Superior Bakery - roof sections and wall sections) which were already weathered/mortared. Those may get in next week, I expect. Smile

And tonight, hopefully one of my local broadcast TV channels (say Fox) will be carrying the Cardinals trouncing the Pirates (okay, the game between those two teams, but I do expect the Cards to win...).

And, does anybody in here know the difference between a Chicago Cubs hot dog and a St. Louis Cardinals hot dog? (Answer a bit later today...) Whistling

I'll be at the Rivet Counter for a bit, seeing what I can learn from Karl about decoder installs.

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape G.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, just a cup of dark roast and a couple sour cream glazed donuts right at the moment...

I'm busy using up all my ink printing the Reunion booklet we will be mailing to everyone that came to the reunion.  I ordered more last night at 11PM...  So far this morning the sun has been out, but the forecast says partly....  Yesterday was a decent day for the panels for this time of year, about 15 kWh of electric.  not a great day, but not bad either.  I hope to get 300 or so kWh of power this month.  If I do it is right on the money to produce 4,700 kWh this year.

Running up to my sister's house every day is putting a major dent in my getting things done around here (as always).  Luckily I do not have any meetings tonight so I can get a few things done then.

Jim, Blakie was the first cat I inherited...  A promise to my dying Father.  About 6 weeks later, my sister, in tears, begged me to take Manét as she was going to take him but was afraid her cat would kill him (probably would have... nasty feline that one!).  I packed up Manet and brought him here.  His brother greeted him through the cage door, I opened the cage and the two wrestled for about a half hour and then groomed each other arms around each other.  I think they missed each other (Litter Mates).  About 4 years later when my Mom died, I took her little tiger kitty to join the managery.  The boys would have accepted her right off, took Shiela a couple weeks to even tolerate the boys.  I kept Sheila in a bedroom by herself for several days.  Then I put up a temporary screen door so they could get to know each other and get used to each other.  finally I put the boys into my bedroom and let Sheila out for a few minutes for several days.  Finally when they were comfortable looking at each other through the screen, I let Sheila out, and there never any real problems except Sheila avoided the boys as much as possible.  Within a month Manét and Sheila were best friends and would groom each other while sitting on the shelf next to me at the computer.  When I had to have Sheila put down, Manét obviously grieved for several months....  he would sniff where Sheila used to sleep and look at me and meow loudly.

Best get moving.  Almost time to head out to my Sister's house.

Later!

Thank you all for the condolences. I tell you there were days when I wished I had gone on that last train ride with her. The only thing that kept me going was having to be here for my two girls. They needed their dad more than ever.

Ulrich - you had me laughing out loud with your comments about the job position. How is the job hunt going on your end. When I was on here last you were in a tizzy about having to take some job you were ill suited for??

Johnboy - I will be in prayer for your surgery.

Garry - I have three kids. One 30 who is married and two girls ages 8 & 10. They are of course taking it hard. But I had them seeing counselors for a year and that made a huge difference. Thanks

Todd - Thanks. And yes that is awesome !!

Jim -  Actually she hasn't bought me one, she has bought me TWO. The first was for my birthday. An N&W steamer Big Smile

Afternoon guys

I got that old sountraxx decoder installed in my 2nd F45. Weird the horn is louder than the engine sound on this, which is unlike the Tsunami. I need to get some really fine sandpaper so I can "polish" the new lenses that I'm making from Lucite rod. I'm converting this loco to LEDs. I have enough I could convert some other locos too. I'm keeping the DH163 I have in the F45 for lights and motor control. The old soundtraxx has some issues with LEDs. I also need to find some tubing to mount the LEDs.

My right ankle and left knee has been bugging me the past few days. I rolled the ankle, and I think I slept on the knee funny or something. So my activity level is kinda low right now.

i'll be catching up by the RC

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Got the Athearn screw in motor mounts a full day early. The GP50 got the first pair. The mounts in it were so deteriorated the motor was falling out of it. Now it's seated good and tight. The remaining pair went to one of the F3's that had a torn mounting lug. That motor won't rattle.

Karl ....... Actually a railfan would be a Gone-crazier

Also, Karl ..... I like the WM 4-6-2 on display.

JimCG ..... Speaking of Karl and DCC reminds me of the DCC I installed in a Bachamnn 44T. You might remember I struggled with it.   Believe it or not, Karl has done 2 of those DCC installs. I have to wonder how he would consider doing the second one.

Also JimCG ...... I recall seeing the Cardinals in Wrigley field playing the Cubs long ago. My friends and I went to games by train. We road the Burlington suburban trains to downtown Chicago, and road the "L" to the games.

YGW .... I'm glad things are working out for you. Evidently, the lady is aware railroaders like to couple up.

Ray ... Interesting to hear about the cats.  I bet your litter box cleaning chore takes time.

News in this area is the annual Ham Festival will be held in town. It's always a fun family activity.

Regretfully, the US Forest Service is not sending Smokey the Bear to the Fire Department booth at the Ham Festival as was planned. Smokey has been furloughed by the shut down.

Actually I thought about making a baaaaaad "Polydipsiatic Pediculous Gongoozler train fanatic" type joke, don;t remember it now, but it was baaaad, what do you expect so early in the morning? I think it went along the lines of "an abnormally thirsty {for trains}, lice ridden train gongoozler sat by the trackside inn...Musicwatching all  the trains to go by[8]"

OK vinnie,  I said I THOUGHT about it...but didn't !!

Well My back has been killing me all day since grocery shopping and the new "cold snap" compared to recent weather. Didn't accomplish much. "Busted my back" was a figure of speech. Just so busy with people that I hadn't time for lunch. What did bother me was my right knee. Have to kneel to hook up the four anchors for the w/c. Then ,of course, have to kneel to release them.  What fun!

Year and a half ago, got a hernia lifting a w/c with a HEAVYWEGHT person in it. Only way to get the chair into position. Lost months work.

As to my nickname, I used to bowl. Used a 16 lb. ball with a finger tip grip. Had a habit of Flipping it..Hence the nickname. Carried a180 plus average for over 15 years. Had to quit bowling when whiplash got to my neck nerves. That and the arthritus got to the point they wanted to operate on #'s 4,5 and 6. Told them Heck, no way. Not till I can't use my arms. That was over 22 years ago. My wife's surgeon cringes when all I do is turn my head and he hears crackling in my neck.

Best wishes ,Prayers and Blessingsfor all .

No movie watching today though I did start on 'Raiders of The Lost Ark'. Worked on two locos, played a couple of games and that's about it. I was feeling too bad to do much of anything else. Hope I feel better tomorrow.

  Evening All,

Day off today, so 1 load of laundry, and lots of model road projects. Almost finished the Hardwood furniture building, It is a little bigger that I thought, and when I bought it several years ago, I had a different layout, and now I need to find a place for it on this layout.

Took a few pics of the summer stock theater with the jug band playing. I need to figure out how to set the macro setting for better depth of field on close up shots.

Prayers to all in need.

Good evening!

I'll take a steak sandwich cooked at medium.

Finished up building and installing a diaphragm on my Athearn RTR F7A. Sadly, the one for my B unit broke, so now I need to make a trip down to the hobby shop and look for another one and maybe some new truck side frames for the A and B units. I even got one of those close-coupling kits installed on both units, and believe me, those kits make your Blue Box/RTR F7's look a million times better than they were before.

Have a good evening everybody!

Flo, can I get one of those double dip delicious caramel and chocolate chip sundaes with extra hot fudge on top , and whip cream and a cherry on top?

Stayed away from the workbench all day, got downstairs around 8 and knocked out the Penn Line Consol I've been remotoring and decoderizin for the LHS. Mr Murphy musta had the night off cuz it only took an hour, then to Decoder Pro it went. Big Smile It sounds great now! I think the owner is gonna be tickled!

Paul, Love the jug band! I can almost hear the twang!

Jeffrey, looks like the BBQ done got a little out of hand, it does...

Evenin' folks!

Janie, just a decaf right now.

Actually made down to the train room this evening!  I spent most of today printing about half of the booklet for the reunion souvenir.  I don't have enough ink to finish it and ordered more last night.  Should get it in a couple days.  Also did my family duty and drove to my sister's house to feed her cats.  i have decided that her new tiger cat, "Claude"  (as in Monet) is a sweetheart.  He now greets me at the door and immediately heads to the kitchen and looks at me expecting me to feed him.  he usually leaves some of his toys in the dish as payment for it.  After he eats some he then goes to the living room and begs to have his tummy and head scratched.  The outdoor feral cat she has adopted is also letting me get closer.  Today was the second day he let me pet him while he was eating.  He is also a beautifully marked cat.  Tomorrow I will take a book on bridges with me to do some research as I have read all the interesting materials my sister has laying around.  I stay about 2 hours so the car can charge and get me most of the way home on electric.  Today was 219mpg on the way home as I had almost a full charge when I left her house.  I may just get my first 1000 mile tank of gas!

Started this post about an hour or so ago...  Got side tracked.  Got an email letting me know that a model railroader friend of mine cut off the tips of two fingers yesterday in a table saw accident...!

Prayers for all in need!

Not a lot happening, I have been carrying out some preparatory work for a scratch building project I'm embarking on, though I've scratch built the lifeboats.  http://cs.trains.com/mrr/f/88/p/220945/2441650.aspx#2441650

Am taking tomorrow off,The AMG, http://modeltrains.kiwi.nz/  are exhibiting at a train show at Hamilton over the weekend, so will be helping with the set up. I should stress that it's Hamilton,  New Zealand NOT Hamilton, Ontario. Smile, Wink & Grin.

Some years ago the company I  was then w**king for was one of the two subcontractors to Lockheed for a US military contract, the other was in Florida,  if my memory serves me correctly. At 0500 hours on a Saturday morning I was the only one on the job so when the phone rang I answered it not expecting to hear a "breathy Southern Belle" voice on the other end. I must admit that I immediately pictured a cross between Scarlett O' Hara and Marilyn Munroe. Thumbs Up CoolWhistlingUnfortunately things went down hill quickly from there as I could not convince her that while she had got the right company , we were not located in Ontario, that New Zealand was not part of  Canada, and that there could be a 17 hour time difference. Sigh I still wonder from time to time If she thought were all Canadians as rude and as ignorant and had a funny accent like me. Laugh

Looking forward to a weekend of running trains.Big Smile

Thoughts and Best Wishes to All that need them.

Cheers, the Bear.

MAKE IT A GREAT DAY!

Here are today's fun limericks:

The incredible Wizard of Oz

Retired from his business becoz

Due to up-to-date science,

To most of his clients,

He wasn't the Wizard he woz.

There once was a consumer named Phil
Who really wanted to kill
A sly young vendor
Who made him a big spender
And gave him a very large bill.

Weird words:

Xanthodontous:{adjective} Having yellow teeth

effrenate {adverb}: unrestrainedly; violently

Kakistocracy - A government that's run by its worst citizens.

{on that note: I will leave the last word to your "imagination" with the current state of affairs}

 HO and N Scale.

After long and careful thought, they have convinced me. I have come to the conclusion that they are right. The aliens did it.

Heck, Mr G, you don't want to go upsetting Vinnie. LaughLaugh  My father once told me  "That there was only "Bad Government" and "Worse Government" and that depended on which end of the political spectrum you came from." That said now perhaps I should go and sit quietly in the back corner.Whistling

Good Night All, Cheers the Bear. Zzz

Good morning,

So far I've done a lot of work on the house and some train work, but mostly just work.  Basement flooded a couple months ago but the trains survived. I was out of work for a week recently, and I got married.

Due to the gov. Shut down I only lost half a pay check and was called back.  Still this caused me to miss the Train Show in Berea, first time in about 13 years.  Almost glad I didn't go since the furnace stopped working.

Did I mention I got married, wahoo.

So how are you guys doing?

Mostly sunny, with a high near 78.

Jim- Laugh I don’t know you all that well, but I gave you the benefit of the doubt that you know women eat at various restaurantsSmile, Wink & Grin Laugh. Too funny.  But you were right, I was kidding you about meeting women at the Chinese buffet  because of my frequent visits (in case you haven’t noticedWhistling)Laugh. Specifically the waitresses there. What I thought you meant was you understood what I meant and was referring to the Chinese girls eating Asian food all the time and you didn’t care for it THAT much and you were jokingly saying that’s why you weren’t all that interested. Hence my saying they, meaning the Chinese girls, like other food too because I dated a Chinese girl shortly out of high school. AndHmm Confused Huh? Laugh….I’m getting cornfusedLaugh. Anyway, you were right I was kidding you.  Hey glad to have you back more often!Yes Cool

This typing thing can get misunderstood pretty quick when one thinks the other knows what the other means but doesn’tLaugh. Especially when you get me involvedLaugh.  I wonder how long before these forums will be video instead of typed. Now THAT would be cool!! Big Smile

I thought Tom (bridge) kept Uff-Dah quarantined for some potential medical thing. Maybe not.

And here I thought Flip was just a shortened version of Philip.

Paul- Love the summer stock theater!Yes

Ray- Ouch! Healing thoughts for your MR friend.Angel

So how are you guys doing?

Sounds like us..."Music if it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all"Music.. well at least you got things "fixed".

Congrats on the marriage, but really, it only illicited a "wahoo" out of you instead of a big "WAHOO"

so got another dad gummed headache...fall/weather changing is hard on me that way.

TODD: yeah, Yup, and Uh hun: Kakistocracy! A gov't of the worst citizens! Etymology:Ancient Greek κάκιστος (kakistosworst), superlative of κακος (kakosbad) + -κρατια (-kratiapower, rule, government).  {noun}

Defined definitively as :" Government under the control of a nation's worst or least-qualified citizens"

I'd offer real quotes, BUT, see below:

I can MENTION the word here, we just can't DISCUSS it here. THAT would become a "politcal discussion"!!

The timing for that word is purely coincidental!

Have a good day!

Good morning. It's 63° with 84% humidity and patchy fog. The high will be 85° and will feel like 89°.

Nothing planned for today. I was extremely tired yesterday and try as I might I couldn't get any sleep at all. Finally got to sleep about 1:00 am and got about five hours. Better than nothing I guess. At least I feel much better this morning. I think later I might hunt around on Ebay for a couple of Athearn motors. I'm eventually going to need at least one. The F3 I was working on yesterday has a Jet 500 and while it is DCC compatible it takes more power than the more modern motors. Plus it won't hurt to have a skew wound motor in it. The old motors are fine at speed but become jerky at low speed due to cogging.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a bowl of Pumpkin Flax Organic Granola this morning to go along with a pot of Seneca Lake Dark Roast Coffee.  What?  Yes, my R&GV RR Mug would be a good one to use.

Dennis, I've seen clips of video from camera's mounted on birds...  Absolutely cool.  Hope you enjoyed the movie!

Lee, congrats on getting hitched!  Did you get married on a RR Bridge?  Glad the layout survived the flood...

Galaxy, I do like the limericks...  Been trying to pronounce some of the old words.  I should find a place to use each one every day for a week...  Nah!  people think I'm crazy as it is.....

Sun is trying to peek out from behind some clouds, and I have a full day of running around doing stuff for other people.  Best get started!
