I like those modern elevators on your layout! We should build some like that out here in North Dakota.

Yes. All railroads need elevators for turf and ballast.LaughCool

Garry- Among things I learned in the Army was "EAT,Sleep,Smoke, Relieve" whenever possible.

Der and I are in touch. Doing o.k..

Cape Jim sent me a very interesting "E".

Yesterday could not get onto the forums.

Among things did Saturday, rested up from "O P S". [Putting up with other peoples STUPIDITY.]

LORD, Grant me the serenity to accept stupid people the way they are, courage to maintain my self control, and the wisdom to know that if I act on it, I'll go to jail.

Jeff , does that cover it????

Prayers and Blessings to and for all.

Mornin' people...

Zoe, I'll have a short stack of blueberry pancakes with real maple syrup and a pot of dark roast Seneca Lake Blend coffee to keep my FGLK mug filled for a while.

Rain.....  That sums up today's weather.  Well, they are predicting a few claps of thunder to accompany the rain at times today.  Currently 67°F with humidity at 110%  (did I mention it is raining?) with a high around 75°F and continued high humidity this afternoon accompanied by some noise.

I plan to disappear down to the train room only interrupted by the daily trip to feed feed Claude and Clim...

Oh...  Jeffrey, I too love those new fangled towers.  Are they scratch built or store bought? Laugh

Later!

Store bought I'm afraid. You can get them from Woodland Scenics all day long with your choice of turf or ballast already installed.

Tore down the GP50 this morning to it's very last clip, disassembled the motor, checked all the gears. Other than needing a good cleaning and a lube change all I found wrong is the motor mounts (press-in rubber pads) have become brittle and are very loose. So a new set of plastic screw-in motor mounts is on the way and should be here on the 10th.

I could do that, but I want to be able to remove the motor in the future should I have to and not have to glue it back in again.

Silicone clue is easy to pull apart and to put together. This is why LION uses so much of it. Another thing LION uses is modeling clay.

Anyway. I just put a sixth train on the layout and it is running just fine. One more to build, and another to repair and then I will have all eight running at once.

But that project is going to be pushed aside not, and LION will work on SIGNAL SYSTEM. Him has to build the signals, more on that in the future, but for now, him needs to see what the relays are doing and which ones are not doing what they are supposed to be doing. Hooking up the signals will let me see what is happening, and to troubleshoot the troubles. Once that is all working LION can spend time on the last two trains and on the scenery. You would think that the inside of a subway tunnel would be easy, but...

That is the question.

Got a little done today train wise. Took the GP50 apart for a full inspection. Cleaned it, put back together and re-lubed. Need to replace motor mounts. Parts on order. Watch two movies today. This morning I watched 'The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy' and this afternoon/evening I watched 'The Longest Day'.

Time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

Evenin'!

Janie, just a cup of decaf, please...

Have two more blossoms on the Night Blooming Cereus tonight giving the whole house a sweet pleasant smell.   Got most everything done that I needed to get done today including spending some time in the train room.  I think I have the mix for the Blacksmith's shop.  Just hope I made enough to do the whole building....  Making more could be a problem as I didn't write down the original formula.  It was for a small project that I didn't think I would ever need more for...  Started a bit more in the track area...  i will be making a bridge going over the road in the corner I finished a while back and now think I will be using a different kind of bridge than the one I was going to use.  I need a bit more clearance and the other type wouldn't give it too me without some major modifications of the area.  SO...  On to plan B.

Hope all of you have a great night!  Prayers for those in need...

Evenin', Flo - just a go cup of hot cocoa, please. Thank you!

My apologies for the lack of my presence (not to be confused with "presents") around the Diner, for wayyyyy too long.

I'm trying to simplify (after realizing - d'oh! - that I have too many things/activities/other stuff to distract myself with). Haven't done much at all with the layout, unless you count playing around with the "future layout design" yet a few more times. I haven't found anyone local (and don't know anyone else) with the skills to do some repairs/tuneup/decoder-install on my second MRC Shay (which has problems in the drive train linkage). Need to get some stuff into boxes or some kind of coverup, as the dust has been accumulating.

Haven't heard back from daughter since...end of July, when I asked her about how it is, (after not hearing from her about our (usually delayed after the date a week or two) Father's Day celebration) that we haven't celebrated any holiday on the holiday for years (but she can find time to celebrate holidays with son-in-law's family and/or her mother). Still no word back on that... I vary between being angry, sad, and wondering if she'll ever talk about whatever has her refusing to respond. Pretty disappointing is all I will say. I am not seeking sympathy from you Diners (although I know several of you are supportive), but that's one part of things.

Also had one of the two co-workers who left at the end of August come back (temporarily) to help with walk-ins/crisis (and word is, the other one's not doing as well as they'd planned). Work has some good things lately, but I wouldn't mind retiring tomorrow (if I could afford it, which I can't yet).

Having mixed to poor results from a couple of matchmaking sites (too many seem to be way too far away, or not interested/interesting), which somewhat has stretched my 'applied' faith. The men's small group at church and worship on Sunday morning are major sources of support!

Jeff - I'll have to go look up Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy in the iMDB. Didn't realize that they had made a movie of it! Is it worthwhile?

My car (YAY) is about 2 payments away from being paid off, and I got my (company maximum) 3 percent salary increase in tomorrow's paycheck. Every little bit helps!

I am glad that the Cardinals are in the NL playoffs... Big Smile

Good to see (in spite of the apparent forum software glitches/updates/whatever today) several familiar faces in here. Smile May all of you stay healthy and rested (as much as possible in a few cases that I recall), and be blessed in your financial areas as needed. AngelAngel

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape G.

morning coffee in the diner...

GOOD MONDAY MORNING!!!

Today is Monday, October 7th, 2013!!!

MAKE IT A GREAT DAY!!!

Today's fun limmericks:

We CAN ALL relate to this one:

Is it me or the nature of money
It's odd and peculiarly Funny,

But when I have dough
It goes quickly, you know,

And seeps out of my pockets like honey!

To Hilary Clinton said Bill,
"I think we're staying on Capitol Hill,
'Cause that tired old timer, Dole,
Is digging himself a deep hole,
And the White Water thing's a cheap thrill."

Today's fun words:

Furfuraceous {furh-fu-RAY-shush} {adjective} Covered in dandruff, flaky

Cunctipotent - {kunk-TIP-o-tent}..Having all things. It is the same thing as our word omnipotent today

Parergon - {pa-RUR-gon  n.}Secondary work or business, separate from your main work or ordinary job. A synonym for moonlighting. From Greek roots for "beside" and "work."

Jim in Cape G.-

I know you think you have many activites, but you can lay teh others aside, NONE is more inmportant than MRRing!!! LOL

Sorry to hear of your daughter problems. WHo knows ? with family?...MOH wishes we lived FAR AWAY from my InLaws as my MIL is gravely ill and my FIL runs MOH ragged {there are ways, but FIL hasn't yet figured that FIL COULD run me ragged too...} {My Father hopes NOT to be that way on me.} MIL is near EOL and it isn't easy.

Next, I never placed much faith in those "matchmaker sites"...you never know what you are getting..maybe there are some singles mixers in your area for you? They seem to be rare birds these days..but one never knows..read the "whats happening" sections of your local papers, burried in there somewhere might be events you  might find a common companion at. I was all of 37 years old before I found my Other Half...we have now been together for 13 years, heading to 14! SO it took me 37 years, {41 years for MOH to find me} I like to joke it took me 37 to find MOH and I ain' t letting go! Oh I had other significant others, but none I wanted to marry until MOH came along.

Wish my vehicle was 2 pays away from owning it, but then we have to get MOH a newer vehicle...hoping for a short short term on THAT vehicle! Sigh

Good to see you! STOP IN MORE OFTEN! We miss you!

Coffee and a couple slices of breakfast pizza please. Thank you.

Cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing, with a high near 67.

I guess I’ll find out who later on. Unless the timing didn’t work out for them. I sure  hope I didn’t say I’ll be somewhere.Hmm

Howdy ...  Coffee anda dount please.

Ray .... Good to hear you are moving ahead with your blacksmith project.

Jeff .... Glad you have stuff to keep you busy.

JimCG .... Great to see you in the Diner. Remember, the DIners are always your friends no matter what. Glad you have the church men's group for support.  The Lord has good plans for you, and sometimes you must be patient although it sometimes is hard to be that way. As for your daughter, just keep reaching out from time to time with notes you send, etc. Here in the Diner, you always have good things to say to others, and we know you are a good person. If you want companionship, sometimes a pet helps if you can have one where you live.

Speaking of pets, as I said before, Shelley came home from Paducah with a kitten. She thought our cat, Sassy, needed a companion. So far, Sassy is very depressed about the new addition. If it's up to me we'll go back to just one cat. Shelley is asking for name suggestions for the kitten from her friends. Sassy's suggestion is "Bye-bye".

Hope to have some model railroad time later.

Happy Model Railroading.

If you like sci-fi type straight man humor it's pretty good. It follows the book to a pointbut not in detail. So if you read the book you'll recognize a lot of stuff but you won't always be able to follow the same path as the book all the time.

A very tasty breakfast. Cherry Marmalade on toast. It is homemade, of course.

Anyway, we have all kinds of marmalade, all of them are about 70% Zucchini, and 30% of the dominant flavored fruit. Still I wondered where we got the cherries: Usually our marmalade is locally grown, but apparently these were canned pie cherries.

Well, of course the zucchinis are locally grown, and obviously the oranges, and cranberries are not.

Oh well. As I said a fine breakfast.

Mornin'.....  Although it is still dark out.  The sun is out there somewhere but well covered up by thick heavy clouds dumping lots of rain on the area.

Zoe, I'll have a cup of dark roast in my R&GV RR mug and a couple sour cream glazed donuts to keep me happy this morning.

"It's a lovely day today...  and whatever you've got to do?  It's a lovely day for doing it it's true."

Counties to the East and South of my little corner of the world are all under tornado watches today.  That includes parts of Cayuga, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben and Yates Counties.  I live in Ontario County just a couple miles from Seneca...  Seneca County is on the east side of Seneca Lake.  My son lives over there.  Most probably the danger is to the eastern part of the county I think.  We have been getting some very heavy rain here so far this morning and it may continue all day.

I have all kinds of stuff to do today that will require me to be out driving in this crap...  Guess I best get at it!

Later!

 Morning All,

Currently it is 46 with an expected high of 74 under mostly sunny skies.

I had a really nice weekend off. Replaced a headlight in my Isuzu PU, winterized my sprinkler system, and changed the filter for the HVAC system. Then spent the rest of the time w**king on the railroad. Finished an old ConCor model of a Summer Stock theater my sil gave me several years ago. Not the best quality, but I added a Woodland Scenics Jug Band figure set one of my daughters gave me a few years ago, and added lights to the stage area. Also got a lot of w**k accomplished on the Hardwood Furniture building, and did some scenery w**k along one wall. I hope to take some pictures on Wednesday to share with you folks.

Speaking of daughters, Mine came over yesterday for enchilada's and rice. They want me to move into Carson City, so we can be closer, and visit more often. Right now it is a 50 mile drive one way. My plan is to make that move after I retire in 1187 days, but who is counting. By that time my credit should be a little better, and this house should gain a little more value.

   Prayers to all in need.

Good morning!

Not a train weekend for me at all.  I picked up some Hydrocal coloring and my 2014 MR Calendar on Friday, but that was it.  The wife and I got up bright and early on Saturday and drove to Maine, where we met up with our daughter for a bike ride.  Happy to say young Annie is doing better on hill-climbing on her bike, as that was her downfall during the triathlon she did back in the summer.  Perfect day - we rode along the ocean in Kennebunkport, past the Bush place and through town.  We had a couple of really nice dinners out in Portland, and SWMBO actually got excited about taking the Downeaster from home up to Maine for an excursion some time.  Seniors get 50% off on most of the trains, so it's a real bargain.

50 miles! That is like next door. You don't want to be too close, but 50 miles? It is a 50 mile round trip if we want to go to Walmart. It is 160 mile round trip to go to Hobby Lobby or to Menards.

Good Afternoon Gang!

Janie, just coffee for me this time, if you please...

It´s been a lazy, do nothing day today. I could not persuade myself to do anything meaningful, other than watching a triple feature of my favorite TV program "Railroad Romance". That took care of about 3 hours of my afternoon. Supper time is ahead of us - it´ll be Petra´s prize winning chili Dinner

Jim - glad to see you back. I am sorry to hear about your lack of finding a partner. These things are dang difficult in our age. I am just happy I don´t have to be on the road for that matter. Petra and I are in our 30th year now, which is a blessing.

Flip - does DerJohn still has his old email address?

Have a good one!

Good afternoon. It's 72° with 45% humidity. The high will be 78° and will feel like like 80°.

I'm not feeling good today. Woke up around 2:45 this morning due to an asthma attack. A bad one. I used my mothers old cure-all, Tabasco to get through it. It was cleared up nicely. However I was unable to get back to sleep so now I'm very tired. I've already had several naps and all before noon.

I'm expecting  a package to arrive today. Nothing important. Just an A2M0003 Disk II disk drive. I don't see anything train related getting done today.

Ulrich my friend,

Take a look at the offering by Steven Otte , the first thread on the forum.

He is offering you a job to get you out of that wilderness over there and get you working for Model Railroader.. Does it get any better than this ???   I think not.

Go for it my friend, don't waste any time.

Good Afternoon.

Well. We had two good ol' thunderbangers go through here last might. And now my laptop AC adapter and mixing board are both out. Our surge protector, as per Mr. Murphy, has protected itself rather well..

Sigh.

Dennis, I feel a need to clarify and put a bit of balance/perspective on your comment about wind farms...

Among the big lies that windbaggers like to spread about wind energy, there are 2 that come up a lot.  One is that wind turbines kill a lot of birds, relative to other human activities.  The other is that windbaggers give a d@mn about birds.  Now 1.4 million seems like a lot, and probably is taken from a "study" that is using the worst case scenario, but still a lot of birds are killed by wind turbines every year.  That is why the wind companies are constantly doing research to lower the number of bird deaths from it.

To put this in perspective though, here is an excerpt from a paper published by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority Back in 2009:

"There are many ways to classify the impacts of electricity generation on wildlife. Effects can be direct and/or indirect; acute or chronic; individual or cumulative; and local, regional, or global. Each type of effect was explored in this study. Acidic deposition, climate change, and mercury bioaccumulation are identified as the three most significant and widespread stressors to wildlife from electricity generation from fossil fuels combustion in the NY/NE region.

Risks to wildlife vary substantially by life cycle stage. Higher risks are generally associated with the resource extraction and power generation stages, as compared to other life cycle stages. Overall, non-renewable electricity generation sources, such as coal and oil, pose higher risks to wildlife than renewable electricity generation sources, such as hydro and wind. Based on the comparative amounts of SO2, NOx, CO2, and mercury emissions generated from coal, oil, natural gas, and hydro and the associated effects of acidic deposition, climate change, and mercury bioaccumulation, coal as an electricity generation source is by far the largest contributor to risks to wildlife found in the NY/NE region."

Some numbers on bird deaths from a study done in 2009 (actually extracted from a number of studies).  Please note that when a range of estimates was given the number shown is the lowest estimate. Wind energy: 46,113; Nuclear Power: 458,331; Communications Towers: 4,000,000; Fossil Fuel Powered Plants: 23,960,000; Pesticide Poisoning: 72,000,000; Building Windows: 97,000,000; Ferral Cats: 110,000,000.

Also from the Journal of Integrative Environmental Studies: "...wind farms are responsible for roughly 0.27 avian fatalities per gigawatt-hour (GWh) of electricity while nuclear power plants involve 0.6 fatalities per GWh and fossil-fueled power stations are responsible for about 9.4 fatalities per GWh. Within the uncertainties of the data used, the estimate means that wind farm-related avian fatalities equated to approximately 46,000 birds in the United States in 2009, but nuclear power plants killed about 460,000 and fossil-fueled power plants 24 million."

At least eight birds have died on my little quarter acre lot in the last year.  Five fell down my wood stove chimney last fall and early winter (I had the chimney sweep come and put hardware cloth around the opening to avoid more deaths), and 3 died after getting drunk on fermented berries and trying to fly through the picture windows of my house.  There may have been more but the neighbors cat can no longer jump 8 feet in the air and take them down for her lunch!  Everything we do has an impact.  The trick is try to have the smallest negative impact whenever possible!
