Mornin gang! Cowboy

Day 2 of breathing! Still a little congested, but I'll take it

Ken, I can relate, at 52, i'm having a devil of a time finding a new job. 2-3 hours every morning searching out jobs and applying online, then the call backs and the interviews. Either I'm too old, too experienced or what I don't know. Just gotta keep on pluggin at it. Thank goodness SWMBO makes good $$$. Hmm

Ulrich, Todd's advice sounds pretty good. He may even know what he's talking about!Smile, Wink & Grin

Ray, thats quite a contraption you have there. Lets hope there is years of trouble - free operation there!

Well gang, gotta bring in some wood ( 12 inches of snow expected starting tonightSurprise), get a couple other chores done and swing by my LHS to pick up some stuff, and order some more.  At least I have a little side work I can do for some small bucks here and there!

L8ter gators!

Jeff: That lake was quite low last summer wasn't it? or was that the summer before? You have pics somewhere of it don't you? Do people swim in it?

They swim in it when it's a normal level like now, weather permitting. There's a public beach not far from here. In the real hot years it gets low. The year my younger niece got married was a hot dry year.

Where do you live in relation to the Lake Jeffrey and the public beach. I'd like to check out your area with Google Earth. Big Smile

Todd - On my furnace, installed in 2001, that's a water reservoir with pump. When the pump kicks on, water is pumped through a clear plastic hose the the stationary tubs in the basement. Mine failed when it was about 8 years old and water overflowed onto the floor. Being in the basement, it wasn't a big deal except that the way the floor slopes, most of the water went everywhere except toward the floor drain. Now I have a pan to direct the water better.

We spent our usual couple of hours railfanning Sunday. Traffic was lighter than usual with only 5 trains. Funnt, they were all westbounds as well. One thing I'm noticing lately are petroleum crude unit trains. I've seen a couple in the last month. Never saw them before. Now I'm not saying they haven't been doing this before, it might just be a schedule change. But we have been going to the same spot at the same time and this is something new to us. They are westbound heading toward Conway Yard. I have no idea where they originate or terminate. I'm wondering if this is because of the Marsellus Shale drilling which is having a great impact on a lot of the shortlines in this part of my little world. The tank cars seem to be fairly new. The auto business must be doing a little better too, as we are seeing empty auto racks headed west more and more. I only wish I knew more about what I'm watching. We sit by a 3 track signal bridge and I can't for the life of me figure out the signals. Oh, I have a general idea, but the aspect signals drive me crazy. In a perfect world, I would have the resources to hire a retired railroaded to sit and just answer my questions. We will just keep dreaming on about that one.

Finally got the Dicken's Village display taken down last week. Boy, that's a lot of trips to the attic to put things back in storage. Next display will be Halloween Village in October, so I get a little break from all those steps. These big, old houses are great, but the steps are beginning to get a little difficult.

Hope everybody has a better day than yesterday, and an even better one tomorrow.

Italian roast coffee in an  UNDECORATED  mug, please.

Need to start making some time (and energy) for the train room. Also work more on the few kits acquired recently. But first, if I can get outside before the rain starts, would like to make some extra firewood for the stove for the next few colder nights.

Cool, I am hearing the distant train horns blasting away as it goes through that valley right now. Anyway, healing thoughts to those in need. My hired hand is here, so gotta run.

Cheers! Cowboy Rob

Ulrich- Angel It will be difficult I’m sure, but my suggestion is after the move on Thursday, I would break any and all communications with the parents for a bit. Not take phone calls, no visits. Just with the home administration of course. This will help them to settle to the place better knowing they can’t call and circumvent, or try to, the system. If there is no one to cry to, eventually they will allow themselves to accept and hopefully like or at least appreciate the place. Unfortunately with the situation of a failing mind, and a meddling brother it could be pretty rough. But it’s the best way. Maybe visit in a month. I wouldn’t be surprised if the place suggests something very similar. I still think your brother is positioning himself for the inevitable someday.

Todd - incidentally, I was just thinking the same. That´s why I won´t call them today. I need a break, and so do they.

I am watching some nice steam videos right now - my way of traveling.

Aaaahhhhh nothing more relaxing than watching an animal sleep. 'Bout ready for a nap after that.

V8 Dennis- Well about “Casual Sunday”, the Preacher kinda grinned and lifted on his tip toes after he said that. He wears a suit and some of the “older crowd” (which equals like 3) wear suits like they used to. But most dress “casually” already so…..who knows.

Myself, I wear good jeans (no dress pants othern those that go with my 1 suit), and a nice shirt. I don’t think I’ll ever dress any less “casual” for Church services regardless of where they are. Just me. Besides, the basements fixed up pretty nice.

Ray- What’s the little red box next to the furnace the drain tube goes into? I notice it plugs in. Some kinda evaporative device instead of a drain? Our air intake is not drawn from outside either.

G- Yep betcha the A/C costs more than the furnace. I know ours did. At least he said if we wanted to, but didn’t have to of course, he would replace the furnace for even higher efficiency and quoted a price HUNDREDS of dollars cheaper than the A/C unit we just put in.

Not even gonna guess how today turns out.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Good morning. It's 62° with 100% humidity. The high will be 65°.

The wind advisory is in effect yet again today. Sustained winds of 20-30mph with gusts above 34. Fortunately there's nowhere outside of this area that I have to be today. No plans for today except to work on the layout. I see a big mess right in front of me that needs cleaning up. Some of it is leftovers from yesterdays project.

I have no idea how long I'll be online today. My internet service has gone out several times this morning already and I'm actually enjoying the idea of tracking down the nearest Suddenlink tech and giving him a piece of my mind. Thing is I don't know if he'd know what to do with it.

Good Morning from sunny Germany.

It really feels like Spring this morning - no Barry, not your cat! It´s not warm enough, yet, but the weather guesser predict the temperatures to rise into the high 40´s during this week.

Last night I had a very depressing telephone conversation with my parents. My Mom was having her "fits" again, refusing to move into the new location. She wants to return into their home, but there is no way how that could happen. I am the bad guy, who tricked them into going into that nursing home. My brother is the good guy, who keeps telling her, that she and Dad could very well stay at home and hire a help to take care of my Dad. Mr. Knows-it-all and all even better has not seen them for over two years, but is able to tell, what type of care they need. The aisle in their house is not wide enough to accommodate Dad´s wheelchair and my Mom´s so weak, that even the slightest chore causes her to cough and gasp for air.

Both appeared to have given up on themselves, and I am afraid that they will not live much longer. It just makes me sad. And, of course, mad at my brother.

I won´t be calling them today, just to get a day off.

Have a good one!

I have not heard back from my BoS Rep for over a month,  Green Path part of Hope (helps people to keep there house) have not been able to get hold of her either.

My wife is really having a hard time grasping our situation! She wants a house the same sizes or close as our current house (1500 Sq Foot) with a fenced yard, that will take a 140 pound Wolfhound and a area for me to have a model rail road. Not going to happen where we live on a $600.00 budget and pushing it at that.

She all so does not understand I am no longer the Superman she married 37 years ago. At 57 a well paying job is all most out reach.  I think it was Galaxy that posted the 50's is the unemployable age. With the new Health Care Plan coming, I would not hire someone my age either.

It is just a little hard to except that after living here 21 years, I am going to have to beg someone to let me move into there rental. Sigh

Evenin' folks!

Janie, can I get a refil on the Decaf?  Thank you Ma'am.

Ray, on my installation, the outside air is only used for the burner. It has nothing to do with the air being heated. For fresh air into the house we have an air to air heat exchanger which I can regulate. This is what keeps the bad air out such as radon gas that builds up in most houses.

Yes, you are correct that the outside air is only used for the burn and doesn't go into the heated air.  The installer feels that the colder the air being used to fire the flames, the less the temp of the flame itself is....  I figure he knows more than I do and that it makes sense.  Probably really doesn't make much difference.  If I were to add an air to air heat exchanger, it would be for the main floor of the house by the wood stove.  I have to keep a window cracked to let fresh air in to use the stove.  Main floor is sealed very well, new windows, doors, and lots and lots of attic insulation.  He said if the furnace was on the main floor he would have to use outside air for combustion as cold air would have to come in somewhere else to replace it (as well as meet codes).  The through the wall unit uses outside air for combustion.  As it turns out he would have had to run the inlet pipe all the way to the other side of the house as there is no more room where the exhaust goes out.  BTW, the wood stove had the house at 74° before the furnaces came back on line (3PM).  I let the stove go out and the house is still 72° so the furnace has yet to fire since the test.  I will probably be sound asleep when it comes on...

I like the thing with your water heater.  Mine will be the next thing to have to get replaced as it was installed in 2001 and is past the time they usually last here.  I'm also thinking of moving it to to right under where the kitchen and bathroom are.  Where it is now the water travels 20 to 30 feet before getting to where it is used.  Thanks!

Time for me to get some Zzz

Whistling

Further to Ray's furnace install.

Ray, on my installation, the outside air is only used for the burner. It has nothing to do with the air being heated. For fresh air into the house we have an air to air heat exchanger which I can regulate. This is what keeps the bad air out such as radon gas that builds up in most houses.  . I had one of the first ones in the Province in 1981. I upgraded it to a higher efficiency one about seven years ago. I was told at that time the efficiency of the furnace was not effected by the colder air as it goes nowhere but to the burner and back out the exhaust. .

Another item that I came up with is a pre-heat tank for the water heater.  Originally it was a galvanized tank that rusted out after about 18 years. I replaced it with a fiberglass tank of about 33 gals. It is located in the furnace room ahead of the water heater.

The city water normally comes into your water heater at about 45 degrees to be heated.  In my system the city water comes into the fiberglass tank and is warmed to house temperature before going to the heater.  It works slick.  Very seldom do we need anything more than the pilot light on the water heater to get the pre-warmed water up to temp.

Have been watching your solar info very carefully as I have a friend here in the city that just went that route as well.

Enjoy your new systems.

Jeff, Those FP7s give me an idea. After looking around, I found out amtrak had some. I'm thinking of snagging an amtrak one and finishing it up (after other projects)

The Atlas models I think are the cheapest. I believe I saw an Amtrak one.

*

*

I did some work on the primer gray FP7 today. I drilled holes for the railings and grabs and fitted them in. The smallest drill bit I have is a 1/32" so the holes are a bit bigger than needed. I'll have to pack some clay in around the ends of the rails and grabs. It's not the best job but it'll do. I'm not going to make a habit of it that's for sure. There was very little cleanup work done.

Time to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

Ray : I wish I would have chosen that option too when I had mine put in last year. I have the fresh air coming in from outside and can only imagine how cold it is when it passes by the burner.

I must be missing something here as it doesn't look like they have hooked up the outside fresh air intake.

You are right.  I opted not to use outside air for the intake.  It is optional.  Couple reasons, If it is really cold outside the cold air will lower the efficiency of the furnace as it will lower the temp of the air past the burner, and I live in an area known for cellars having lots of radon gas seeping in.  Mine has tested in the high safe zone, but I like to exchange the air down there to keep that problem at bay.  There is also lots and lots of air able to get in to the basement.  Not really well sealed.... just like most other older homes around here.

He put the short pipe on the intake so no one would accidentally (me for instance) lay something down and block the air intake.

Evening guys

A hectic day today. Work from 630-2, run home, clean up, drop my father's car at the exhaust shop, take him and me to our doctors appointment in Destin, wait for about an hour and a half. Didn't get home till almost 7... ugh

I wound up selling 3 more locos today. A trio of athearn BB SD40-2s. I had started detailing these, but I threw in the towel as it'd get too expensive to be worth it over buying some newer RTR SD40-2s already in BN. The Fs I'm still under the cost of a Genesis F7A/B set and have 12 and most of the detail parts. The GP5 and GP7, I'm only into those ones by about $50 for the pair. I'm going to focus on finishing the GP5 (step wells, grabs, MUs, cut levers, etc.) after the sound install in my SW10.

Ken, I think it's one of P2K SD7/9 boards (these things are crazy, 1 was giving me fits in my SD7) and the dead motor causing the issue with the shorting. I'll get the F3 chassis wired up with either the 9-pin plugs you provided, the 2 atlas U-boat lightboards I found (that have intregal 8-pin plugs). The light board is far easier, but it's your call. As far as testing with a decoder, I'll have to order some, but it'd be a couple of weeks. I don't want to use up my TCS decoder I pulled out of my RS3 today on it, as I was going to stick it in my SW10 until I can get a loksound decoder for it.

Jeff, Those FP7s give me an idea. After looking around, I found out amtrak had some. I'm thinking of snagging an amtrak one and finishing it up (after other projects)

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

10 year warranty? better than the 1 year we got and then of course the furnace needed over $1K in repairs 2 months after the warranty ran out. since the old furnace was the same brand and lasted 28 years -even surviving an oil to gas conversion, I didn't much think about the warranty.

But I'll bet We paid less for ours than you did yours. A lot of money for us though...Cheap is as CHeap does I guess.

Price was not bad for it.  I shelled out $3600 for the furnace (installed), and had them put in the A/C coil for another $500.  The AC will go in early May.  I did a bit of research and found some places wanting a thousand more than what these guys charged.  Some places might be cheaper as well, but they are the ones people around here kept saying, have them do the job for you. NYSEG rebate is for $600 for the 95% efficiency furnace.  Hopefully it will be the last one I have to worry about.....  It's a Trane and the industry rates them near the top of the list for dependability (at least on the lists I saw).

Jeffrey, you gots any Alley Gaters over in that there lagoon?  That might limit some folks going skinny dipping I guess...  LOL  Seriously, any problems with critters in it?  Water Moccasins or other such things?  Maybe I shouldn't watch that Bayou show when I'm over to the son's house...

Yes, we do have alligators! Want one? The gators really aren't a problem. They stay back in the swamps. Very rarely is one seen anywhere near a public area. As for snakes, they're not rampant but they are spread around fairly evenly. Watch where you put your feet and hands and you'll be all right. I've been out here close to forty years and only been bit once.

and, we didn't get no stinkin' rebate from NYSEG.

We CAN add C/A when we can afford it. Double the cost of the heater alone if we had it installed when it was. Doubt we will ever have it installed though.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, just a decaf for me right now...  Been a long day.  But a productive one.

The furnace people took a break about 11 AM to go to a call for help on a furnace and then get lunch.  He told me they would be back around 1PM.  1:05 PM I hear activity down stairs, sure enough they were back on the job.  You know when the owners actually do the w*rk themselves, they tend to keep moving!  When they left for lunch I snuck down and got a couple photos.  They had already removed the old furnace and had a good start on the new.

By 3 PM they were finished had test fired the furnace, showed me where everything was, how to use the new thermostat, and then sat down with me and went over all the paperwork to get the NYSEG Rebate (filled in, all signed and in the envelope to be mailed in tomorrow).  I wrote him a large check, we shook hands, and he was on to another call.  Looks like this now:

Comes with a 10 year parts and labor guarantee, so I figure it should do nicely for as long as I will probably own the house.  Although I hope I outlive the guarantee!  One less thing to worry about around here.  He did suggest I move the heat producing computer stuff (battery Backup, switches, and stuff) as they sit right below the thermostat.

I also printed several more 7 x 5 photos of members of my High School Class who have passed on.  There are 40 of us now gone...  Some of the ones I printed today were close friends of mine in school.  Makes me feel a bit sad....

Later!

Seems like forever till I can "Get on the road again".

My pride and joy!

Sigh! Anyway, enough of that. Big news for the day for me at least is that I finally got to watch a train run on my layout. Bout time I'd say. A few issues that need to be resolved like some turnouts that need tuning and some weird DCC stuff but it sure felt good to run an ore train with my brandy new F8 AB consist and It's got sound. Now that is a new experience.

Nuf said, it's been a good day

Warm thoughts to all

Jeff your photos are nice sharp and clear. They from your new camera??

Have they any .223 or 7.62 ammo ??

That Magnolia tanker looks like one of your special weathering jobs.. Terrific !

Sundown Guns and Tackle has everything! Some of the shots are from the new camera. It's just a VGA camera so it isn't sharp but sometimes a shot sneaks through. Most of the new photos are from my Nikon L20. The only thing I've done to the Magnolia tank car is put new couplers on it. Much of the 'weathering' is dust and rust. Real rust. The car is all metal.
