Kevin, I have read what you posted about your dilema. I can't comment on the aspect of your relationship with your sisters but I am looking at it from a legal perspective. I would tred very carefully if I were you. I have been an executor and I handled all the legal dealings for the company I worked for including a lot of litigation. It can get incredibly expensive if you make a decision that later gets challenged by someone.

Since my father died unexpectedly in Texas without a will, she inherited nearly all of his estate (except for some real property that was in Iowa), then her next husband got everything. There is nothing left of my Father's to worry about.
My Mom died a decade ago. She was in a nursing home, and as they are very costly, it ate up all her assets. Once that happens, Medicaid (aka Medical Assistance) takes over payments to the nursing home, in the case of long term care. She had a will, but my attorney told me since no assets, it was unnecessary to open an estate with the local Wills Office. I would assume the same is true in the case of no will. No assets is the key that you need to confirm. If true, there will be no estate to worry with.

CN Charlie .... Yes, our boyhood experiences stay with us. I recall a train trip from Tennessee to Chicago when I was maybe three or four years old. . I remember sleeping in an upper berth of a heavyweight sleeping car. Later, we moved to Chicago area, and we lived very close to the CB&Q. We were so close to the tracks that my bedroom door rattled on its hinges when a large steam locomotive was chugging through town. We stayed there as I grew up, and I have many memories of Burlington trains I could see from my bedroom.

You are right about that Garry. My wife, and her family, mean infinitely more to me than my sisters do. I am much closer to my wife's sisters than I am to my own. All the nieces, nephews, and other relations I mention in here are all her side of the family.

Every dart board I have played has a triple loop towards the center. In league we played 301, needing to double in and double out.
This is going to sound stupid... I assumed that in the UK dart boards had a triple loop also... because... in the 1981 movie An American Werewolf In London, when David is watching television in Alex's flat, the dart game he watches shows the players hitting all three darts into triple 20s.
Please don't tell me that 1980s American horror movies are not a great place to learn about life in the UK!

The fair is in late August so you don't see much asparagus, but everything else under the sun is there! I sure hope it is not cancelled this year but I'm not holding much hope.
One year they had a theme for a category that included something antique, pre 1950, or some such. Dee Ann asked me if I had anything railroady I wanted to enter.
I thought for a moment and grabbed one of my New York Central conductor's caps and a Dietz lantern, a ticket punch and a few old NYCRR tickets and seat checks. Not only did I get a blue ribbon, I got Best Of Show! (something Dee Ann hasn't been awarded quite yet) That was the last time she ever invited me to enter anything in the fair
Similar to your asparagus competition, there is a stiff competition here for honey, which, allegedly, there has been some skullduggery afoot in trying to best the competition. I can say no more

Kevin, check what the state will cover as far as what expenses they will cover for someone with no assets. It is a different culture up here and the Provincial Government will cover the cost of burial, cremation and a simple service up to $5000.00 for someone with no assets.
If there is no Executor to deal with her affairs (estate) walk away. Rational thinking is often not on the top of the list at times like this. The funeral biz is a racket, why pay for a service no one attends. If the State will pay for cremation, maybe your sisters can spread the ashes in a nice spot and leave it at that.
I have spent at least 20 hours this week as an Executor of an American lady that ask me to be her Executor 30 years ago. It is not my first time in the role and I have never taken a dime for being an Executor for an Estate I have looked after. Of course the devil is in the details but from what little you have divulged and from what I know, if your sisters can get something together with the State financing the service fine, if not I would not touch it. A little time for the dust to settle may make your sisters thinking a little bit more complete as far as how to proceed. But then I don't get called Mr. Spock for nothing, I tend to be able to look at things from a completely rational point of view and little emotion.
I am still feeling off, not enough to slow me down other than being a bit tired all the time and a slight headache off and on. We were talking to some of our friends that are MDs including an ER Doc and they all said it sounds like Covid just but the way it hit me. My Daughter got nailed the same way as well but she is feeling 100% now. We are wondering who gave it to who.
Covid is well under control here and I think it was handled as well as it could have been. I give full credit to our health personal and to the politicians for staying out of it.

Kevin, If you Google a 'Winmau' Yorkshire Board, there is no inner Treble ring. However Boards with Treble Rings are much more common in the UK (Yorkshire is just one County i.e. State) The Boards capable of, "one-hundred-and-eighty" (loud cheer form the audience) are always used in Darts League Cash-prize Competitions, as on TV. 501 or 301, doubles in and out, just the same. Work Front Talked to Paul about the missing paycheck and it went the way I thought it would, badly. He will let me know Monday if I will get what I think I should have coming to me. Seems the owner wanted me to take Unemplyoment and not the Fed Loan to cover wages? Pretty much tell's me I was right, he is keeping the grant funds to line his pockets.

Evening all, had a deadbeat day today. Only did a short go on the recumbant bike and burned 500 calories in prep of the pigout the wife was cookin up for dinner. I should be even on the day.
Ed, I just want to say thanks for all the photos and info you post in the diner and on the forum, you are such a wealth of information and I get such an education from your contributions.
My sister has been digitalizing all our family photos from slides during the lockdown and there is a lot of them. In 1977 at the ripe old age of 20 I ordered a brand new 1978 van from the factory in Ontario, was excited when the dealer told me it was on the train and picked it up right after it rolled off the delivery truck. It came with only one seat as ordered as I was to put in swivel, recliner captains chairs. I spent as much again customizing it as it cost me to buy and was worth every penny I spent from the enjoyment I got out of it. When I sold it 14 years later they were lined up to buy it and I got what I thought was a ridiculous price for it. It was definitely one of a kind and highly recognizable around town. This is a pic right after I got it. I had just put on the wheels with TA 50s, put in the sunroof and put on the flared fenders. There was a lot more to follow and I will post pics of how it evolved as my sister sends them to me.
Ed ... Thanks for sharing the photo .... I recall riding in that car or the second dome car (Silver Castle). I was upstairs in the dome, but I vaguely recall the seating under the dome. If I recall correctly, the seating was back to back with each seat facing across an aisle towards the windows. I'm not sure, however. I would hope the museum staff has drawings of the original seating arrangement.

My wife and I have agreed that our plan will be to wait until she passes and let my sister(s) make all first contacts. If my sisters need help after that, I will help my sisters, but not help with anything directly myself.

Nice 'Love Wagon'!!! Two of my brothers-in-law had them at about the same time. We borrowed one to tour through the Rocky Mountains and it was a really enjoyable experience. We were in our 20s so the cramped quarters didn't bother us at all. It was the easiest camping that we have ever done!
I am glad to see that you are feeling better! We are still being very cautious about Covid-19. A couple of days ago we were in Home Depot buying hardware for the layout. We were the first ones in the aisle but that didn't stop several idiots from crowding in around us to get what they wanted. I was too darned polite to tell them to back off and wait their turns. I figure we will know in about two more days whether or not any of them were positive!

I needed a 3/4" CPVC elbow today, and I waited about 10 minutes to be able to walk down that aisle, and as soon as I did, sure enough, they all crowded around me.

We used to get mink under our dock at the cottage. We would sit on the dock at night so we had a clear view of the skies and many times the mink would sit on the dock floatation right underneath us and crunch away on crawfish. We were thrilled to be in their company despite the noise!

Feeling a little sore this morning. My neighbors are both in their mid-late seventies and asked if I would be willing to replace the boards on their deck with Trex decking. The original boards were starting to lift here and there creating trip hazards for them. The bulk of the supplies showed up Saturday, so guess how I spent my weekend. The only thing lacking was the three trim boards didn't show up, so there will be that to finish. Minimal repairs were needed on the frame, so that was good. The whole deck basically sits right on the ground, so it was all up/down/up/down all day for two days. I'm paying for it this morning!

I'm sorry to see so much illness and worry in here of late. My best wishes to those of you recovering and I hope family members recover quickly and fully as well.
Kevin - to my thinking, the most important part of the debate on the step-mother issue was the "my wife and I have agreed" part. We went through the probate stuff for my mother who passed in Canada with all their crazy probate laws and taxes and my mother in law who had been in a nursing home after assisted living was not enough. My mother in law had been a ward of the state so there was no money involved and probate was fairly easy (we did still have to go through that in Ct.). My mom had been predeceased by my father but still had a house and assets. The decline was long enough that all of us kids were able to meet and work out a plan that avoided the all to common stressers that arise in these circumstances. We had all been estranged and moved away from each other but a face to face of the principles and a few bottles and some intense conversation got it all worked out.
Garry - being a New Haven enthusiast I'm more and Alco guy but those E series diesels are true classics and just gorgeous. GE did most all the electrics and we didn't really have any GM stuff until the FL9 and a few Geeps right at the end.
Our new next door neighbors and the albino skunk that lives in their back yard met last evening. Hopefully none of them got a direct hit. It took us the better part of a month to get the smell out of our mutt when she got too close. And yes we tried every remedy that didn't sound dangerous.
Not too much to report on the layout front. I'm still struggling with the parking lot and road at the back. I wish at this point I hadn't been too idle to go get more of the 1/8" foam sheets from the craft store. I have come to the conclusion I am terrible with drywall mud.
Time to pick up tools and get going. I have a bunch of trailer work to do and I can see the first weekend of the renewed season barrelling at me. Ciao, J.R.
