KRM Good morning, Grandkids have been here since yesterday 7:00am when I picked them up. Been running our heads off trying to just keep up. SS payday today so went on-line to do some things and tried to open my Excel spreadsheet and nothing. Then tried Word and the same. Got looking and Microsoft office was no where to be found in programs. It worked just fine yesterday. So called MS and was on the phone to India for two hours with someone I could not hardly understand. Had to send pictures of my receipt and key code and then was told they had to elevate it because there was no account showing I ever paid for the program. Just happy I had them. I wonder how many people they do this to, hoping they will give up and pay again? Everything I do is in Office. Is there any good free alternatives for Word and Excel?? Roy, as I understand Pex can freeze up to 10 times and still be safe. Well anyway wishing all of you a good Thanksgiving. Best move on.

and as it says, it is free. they have spreadsheet, writer, and Presentation, all for free. been using it for years. They will ask you to sign-in which cost but you don't have to. it actual saves the files to your computer. And will ask you do you want to save changes should you and forget to, when you go to close. It's basically just like Word

Been on the go since EARLY this morning. Made the Maple Brine for tomorrow's bird, while that cooled took the truck in for smog check. It passed ! Now the bird is soaking in the fridge awaiting tomorrow morning. Will be doing a traditional sage & onion stuffing although this one sounded interesting:

The assistant secretary for the County Fireman's Association last week, stopped by in dress uniform to pay my respects, way too young at 74....such a kind giving person Dottie was.....
Picked up my LionChief + Blue Comet....and I am VERY pleased. Not sold on the Bluetooth as it dropped out a couple of times, but the engine is magic and the smoke is prodigious even on low. I'm just needing a K-4s and the PRR T-1 and I can die a happy man....lol. I haven't unpacked the cars, but I can tell you, they will match up just fine. I just need that SuperHeater on the front and I'm working on that and the placque for the front.....
Making progress on the layout, finally, the bracing is going up and will have the back part of the layout up by end of the weekend.
Bottom is dropping out tomorrow with a high in the 20s low 30s....I'll be inside cooking....

Lionel Train Day Dec 8th, will be picking up last years car and ordering this years, plus hope to get a model of MY house lit up in all it's Christmas Time lightning (Refer to MTH Row House in Cream and Green shutters).

Banks - yes on freezing. Pex does not break (normally), but a frozen line means no water. So the line will be wrapped, laid on top of the ceiling joists, and covered with bats...not the flying kind hopefully...

Trying to get lots of stuff done in prep for Thanksgiving. This will be the smallest group getting together in quite a few decades, only 10 adults and two toddlers. We've been hosting family and extended family holiday gatherings for at least 40 years.
8n, Where abouts is the 20 acres ? My roots are multi-generational Kentucky as well as those of my BetterHalf. Lots of good memories of growing up in No. Kentucky on a small farm. Some years back we went down around Cumberland to visit some relatives and they were having a hell of a time with Kudzu overrunning everything.

in thanksgiving prep mode. Last evening helped Mrs make pumpkin pies from scratch and her Mom's cranberry salad. Hard freeze predicted here Wednesday night. Gotta get flower bulbs out of the mud. Gonna don a pair of rubber gloves and go for it.

Mornin' boys. Mostly cloudy and 42 along the Patterson Creek cut-off. The youngest Princess and I will back at the train yard today, decorating the coaches for "Winterland on the Western Maryland". Most of the interiors are lit up, and the shop force is working on installing the outside displays. Picked up the "outfit" from the main office.
Well the repair went well until we put pressure to the repaired area and a new (or another unseen) pinhole leak appeared on the old pipe below the repaired area and too difficult/far down for the plumber to access. The pinhole leaks are due to erosion from the inside and there appear to be potential other defects in the old pipe. Ground/foundation shift are not the cause. So we punted and moved to plan B to run the pex through the attic. Got that all set up for tomorrow...and get to pay twice!
Mike C - I have also been following the 3D printers for train stuff...it looks interesting. One important aspect, the better printers as they build the part step in .003 in or less increments, others step in .010 which makes a noticeable rough surface
Busier day than expected at work. Was misty and cold at noon so walked indoors instead. I hope everyone has a good day.
Nice sunny day here in the low 40's. We bailed the dog out of the vet's boarding service a day early and sorted through all of the mail that built up while we were away.
Did a little yard work, 3 mile walk with the dog and not much else today.
We saw a 3d printer making HO scale or maybe N scale houses at the train show we went to last weekend. I found the web site for the printer manufacturer last night and discovered that it is a kit available for under $1,000. Sounds interesting.
Depending on the part, it could be possible to print unavailable spare parts for trains. It would also be useful to print a scale model of our proposed development of the land in Ky to use during the process to obtail the required building permits.

Well with my work yesterday and finishing the other hole first thing this morning, I got the bid down to $1200 vs nearly $6k by nailing down where the leak actually was. It was definitely at the spot where the pipe entered the slab from below. I also said I would do cover up and concrete work. The plumber enlarged the hole for better access to silver solder the in ground connections. I am thinking of making the hole in the closet to the pipes an access hole and not fill it with concrete, or make the concrete easy to break out (2"). Also had the plumber 'free' the other pipes from the concrete so ground shift does not damage them. Will use expanding foam and FlexSeal around the pipes. But I will leave everything open a few days to ensure no leaks after the repair.
We also figured out a way to test the pipe being repaired that should a future bypass be needed, we found a central manifold in the master bath that would allow a single pex line be run through the attic from the hot water heater to a single point in an accessible wall behind the shower.

The fires in CA are amazing. Between them and the hurricanes the insurance companies got to be hurting.

8N, Nice on the land deal!!!!!! Kinda of what we did. Big cost these days is cost of power to the place. Hope your close to some other power lines. I know some of my friends out west that got a 40K bill to do power. Not like the old days anymore. Hope the Gov don't stick their nose in on the bridge project, that could end up a big deal as well. Hope your far enough off the grid to not be poked.

Pretty chilly today - 40's. Slowly warming a bit this week.
Well got a test hole punched in the slab and the leak was not there, so pressured up the hot water side and saw the water coming from a likely spot about 15 in away where the pipes penetrate the slab. So started another test hole there. Ran out of gas so will continue the saga tomorrow.
Interesting Logano just won the NASCAR championship over the 3 guys that dominated most of the wins this season. Ya know Truex is unhappy about it!

We gto back to home base last night. Trip out and back totaled just over 2700 miles. Drove the minivan this time, as it has not been on the highway recently. Guess we got the gunk blown out of it good and proper now.
Most of the trip was spent with meetings with the lawyer and financial guy to get our estate plannng cleaned up.
We also stopped in Ky. and ended up placing an offer on 20 wooded acres. The offer was accepted, so we just need to work through the items in the contract before taking full ownership. This move now requires a change in our building plans for our yet to be place in Ky. Simmilar process and issues, but the water line, electrical service, and access road now become about twice as long as the property that we bought a few years back would have required. It also looks like a small bridge will be required over a stream that is on the property. Hopefully, we will get started on that project this spring. Ought to start looking into some CAD software for our home computer to help with the amount of design work that will be needed.
I've received the Hufflepuff and Griffendor boxcars I had on order. I've got to check on the Slytheren and Ravenclaw boxcars that ought to be shipping at any time now. We will probably order another bunch of elves to help populate the Polar Express layout too.
About all for now.
60 degrees. Sunday School, Lutheran service [my first] and a Muslim service and meal at 6. Busy Sunday.

Hit 69 today and was very nice! Partly sunny. Cold front tonight. 40's tomorrow.
Spent the morning/afternoon building two 1/2 cord racks for firewood. Used a bunch of 2x6's from a shed I was going to build. Came out good and I finished just as the firewood delivery showed up.
Kev - the leak cause could be a variety of reasons. A bad spot in the copper, the foundation heaving - we have gone from drought to swamp in last couple of years, who knows? House is 41 years old.
Decided to change direction on the leak repair. Turns out ins will not cover anything as the repair cost does not exceed the deductible. Dug out some of my tools - air chisel, etc., picked up a diamond blade for the side grinder, and tomorrow will start to cut into the slab. Also having the plumber back out Mon am to discuss other options.
yesterday was a busy day. By the time we got the plow and chains on the tractor it was time for son to go to work. The 12 inches of fluffy light snow had settled to about 8 inches of heavy wet snow. Just plain miserable to deal with. Kept plugging the blower and hard to push. Between that and robbing a hydraulic hose from the log splitter to replace a broken one I spent 5 hours plowing snow.
Afterwards picked up the shackles for the Blazer and another round of endless shrimp at Red Lobster. Crashed as soon as we got home.
