Kids had some virus that is going around and Char got it, she's been sick for about 10 days now; but, she's getting better.  In better news - she saw her transplant doc today and everything is great other than this virus.  He said she will just have to ride it out, no meds for it.  She's using cough meds and benadryl etc for symptoms.  I had to play Mr. Mom Saturday and then Sunday was spent catching up on the outdoor chores so no trains this past weekend.  Hopefully some work will be done this weekend, though :)

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Brent, don't saw your leg off. Whistling

Don't foresee any need to use a saw other than a jig saw, table saw, and tile saw. Now the step ladder still has me concerned because I'll need that to get the soffit down and the drywall patches up... good news is I won't need to use the 18V DeWalt cordless drill/driver - that thing has as much torque as a Corvette Stingray!

We got some storms here last night, and supposed to get some rain off and on all day today, but nothing that we can't handle!

Morning all.  Rain has finally stopped this AM.  Flooding down east.  Will all flow to the ocean eventually.  Off to a lunch meeting.  Fried catfish is my choice.  Really good.

Hope Char gets better.  Kids too.  Big thing going around nationwide.

Rich, great finds.

Brent, get little ones to hold the ladder. Wink

Prayers for those in AZ.  CA too.  Too much water at one time.

Have a good one.

Hold it??? They won't stay OFF them when I have them in the house! Had the 12ft A Ladder in last weekend to paint the foyer, at one point I went to clean a brush, when I got back one child on each side! Christina was about 7 feet up... Matthew was trying to get to rung #2.

Good Morning,

Been wanting to comment on some of the previous posts, but just didn't make it, so will try now.

Plate Rail, Bruce.  Man did you ever score!   It is probably a good thing that there wasn't anymore vendors.  Its always more fun when you bundle stuff, seems you always end up with a better deal.  Unfortunately, I only recall two or three times I have been that successful.  You haven't identified the area you live in, you should strongly consider going to York with your luck.

dougdagrump,  Glad your trip the other day did not involve the ER.  But, you knew you would be in trouble.  What makes it really bad is you think hey that worked out well, and your a little "proud" of it.  Then you catch "holy heck" because she doesn't feel it was a wise thing.  So you don't win.  Been there, done that!

rtraincollector,  With all the re-wiring you are doing you need to post a drawing of your layout and mods.  Hope your "secondary" activity is doing well!  ER sure has a great product line!

cnw1995,  Doug that video is awesome, I couldn't imagine peddling through that tunnel without concern for oncoming traffic!  Congrats for the youngest!

richardm47, What a great story regarding the "wreck".  You didn't really expect that a 5 year old would keep that quiet, did you?  I'll bet that is the first thing he will want to check out.

lion88roar, I think you missed your calling.  You would be quite effective in Project Management!  I don't suppose you do a milestone or pert network for you projects do you?  I have seen "professionals" not as well organized.  I'm impressed.

SPMan,  Ray, even though George is located on the opposite coast, it still works for me.   Its seems there are more trained people in that area than out here.  I did notice that when I shipped the package I could ship it for about 1/2 price via Priority Mail compared to UPS.  Travel time was 3 days compared to 6, and both methods I had the packages insured for $600.  I'm not sure where you would put another engine, but it is always fun to pick up something new.  Hopefully I will be able to make the next meet in Arcadia.  This cast is just to uncomfortable for it.  I'm sure I will NOT be going to Cal Stewart this year.  The cost of the show, parking, just really doesn't justify for me.

Brutus,  Hope Char gets over that virus quickly, that's the last thing she needs.  Glad to see you posting.  Sorry about Chewy.

Need to get busy, (????), (like what am I going to do).  Had new X-rays done yesterday.  Boy do they ever look great!  I have noticed a tremendous improvement in how my leg feels.  Just so much stronger, and not shifting around when I move it.  Well, the X-Rays support that.  Everything appears well aligned, and even looks secure.  Looking forward to Dr appt tomorrow!

I will reserve comment on the "drought" and flooding situation .  No doubt for those directly affected it is indeed a catastrophe,  but there is a significant political side as well.   Too Bad

I hope everyone has a great day, good weather, and tremendous health!

Thank Don. I am actually studying for my PMP, hope to take it late this year or early next year. I have to be this organized for projects because I have to keep TheQ updated on my progress and what is coming up... she likes lists, and detailed lists at that! You think that is impressive - you should see the 'plan' for the Disney World vacation next week! When I go on vacation I like to get away from what I do every day... TheQ needs to know what we are doing every step of the way - that is unless we are going somewhere to an all-inclusive resort, then all she wants to know is where the open bars are located, where the pool is, what time we are going for dinner, and when we are leaving... the rest of the time she can be found on a beach, in bed, or in the hot tub!

Good morning all,

Don, glad the leg is feeling more solid this time.  I E mailed the guy in Virginia yesterday but have not received a reply yet.  Quite a savings you made on shipping with priority mail.  What is the weight limit on that?  Can you ship a heavy die cast steam engine on that?  They must have a size limit too.

Chief, we did not get a drop of rain where I live but they had some heavy down pours about 30 miles or more to the East.  Riverside, California had some flooding with cars under water in places.

Our son is out of town with his work for a couple of days so it's just my wife and I for a while.  He will be home tonight so I will probably cook a dinner for us.  We got take out last night.

Those of us who are retired railroad engineers from the former Southern Pacific, now Union Pacific railroad lost a good friend and fellow worker yesterday after a long battle with COPD.  He was the one who interviewed me for my job in engine service back in 1979.  He had been promoted to Road Foreman of Engines by then.  It was his approval that guaranteed me the job.  I was an old foggy by railroad standards at the time being 42 years old  so he had to stretch to justify hiring me.  Even though they had anti discrimination laws to protect people because of race, age, gender etc, they still had ways to get around it if they had wanted to.  I will always be grateful to him.  I did not let him down and had a clean record until I retired in 2000.  Thanks a million John.  R.I.P.

First of all, thanks so much for the birthday wishes.  I can hardly wait till I'm 70  #As If!

Don,

I live north of Toronto where the pickin's are usually pretty thin when it comes to 3 rail trains.  I did wish prior to the swap meet that there'd be no other buyers for the 3 rail stuff but me and it basically turned out that way.  At least I don't recall seeing any other buyers around their tables and I spent 2 hours paying strict attention to those 3 major vendors.

Coincidentally, I happen to be in the area ( Hershey antique auto swap meet ) the week before York.  Been doing the same routine for years and I usually find my fill of old train goodies at Hershey.  I can only imagine the trouble I could get into in York.  They'd never let be back across the border!   Unfortunately it's just not practical making another 20 hour trip both ways.

This was my Sunday fun project.  Made a chimney, painted window frames, blacked out the lanterns and grab rails, added extra lighting.  Just need a 700E to go along with it. Sorry if the picture doesn't post...just click on the link.

Evenin' All.

Sounds like things are going well Don. Just no dancing for awhile yet. Stick out tongue

CHF support group started up again today, were on summer hiatus. Unfortunately a couple of members are no longer with us. Angel

Sounds & looks like I-15 north of Lost Wages really took a beating in the rains yesterday.

As far as repairs I've been using a guy in the Denver area that used to do the repairs, etc for Mizzells prior to their closing down.

Well, time to see what sounds/looks good for supper.

Later all.

Off to bed. Actually been asleep for hours.  Woke up to take meds.  On strong antibiotic.  Hope that is why indigestion.  Says it will "play" with tummy.  Also came home from meeting freezing but no above normal temp.  Headache.  Knees ached and stiff.  Still are.

Got things to do tomorrow AM.

Rain stopped finally.

Sleep tight all.

Sunny, muggy, and about 90 here today.  Thunderstorms are really dumping rain about 20 miles north of us.  Weather radar in Kansas suggests that we will see some of this around sunrise tomorrow morning.  Going to ramble around on subjects a bit today.

I've collected three stings in the last week.  I discovered a paper wasp nest the hard way on Labor day.  Two stings from that one - one on my collar bone and the other on my chin.  Looked like I was pouting all afternoon on Labor day.  Last night, I discovered an underground nest in my front yard while I was mowing.  I think it is cicada killer bees.  They took exception of me passing over their front door with the lawn mower.  Another sting on my neck - looks like I might have the mumps.

The new Hot Rod magazine arrived yesterday in the mail.  There was an article summarizing the history of the GTO.  It is interesting to note that the 1/4 mile times and speeds for most of the years the GTO was in production are very close to the published 1/4 mile time and speed for my 2006 Cobalt SS.  Amazing what 45 years of automotive development has given us - the Cobalt goes as fast with a supercharged 2 liter engine as the GTO's went with 389 or 400 cubic inches.  The brakes, handling, safety, and gas mileage improvements are notable as well.

We are going to have a couple of layouts set up at the KATY Depot for this months kids program this Saturday.  I'm planning on a 9 by 18 loop with a couple of passing sidings.  Probably will also set up a smaller loop to run some conventional control equipment, too.

This will run from 10am to about 3pm.  I know some of you guys are not too far from Sedalia.  You are welcome to stop by.

I tried my hand at blackened salmon for the first time tonight.  Turned out pretty good.  We'll be doing that one again.

To add another home improvement story - a close call, really. I was re-sawing some maple on my table saw last weekend.  This job is better suited to a band saw, but my band saw is not up to the task.  All of a sudden, the saw kicked back.  Fortunately, I was using a Craftsman gizmo that is a combination push stick, ruler, center finder, etc., etc.  When the dust settled, that gizmo was in at least three pieces, and I was undamaged.  That thing prevented serious injury of the fingers on my right hand.  Sears still lists this item on their web site, but I was unable to order one for some reason.  Found one on e-bay, though.

Prayers for those that are recovering.

About all for now.

Good morning all,

Tried calling some friends on the forum this morning but nobody home.

I've started getting a sore throat again lately.  Had it before a week or so ago.  Finished taking prednisone after 5 days so now am taking nothing.  Hope I'm not getting sick again.  I have been waking up cold in the early morning lately.  Time to add another blanket I think.  It's real hot in the day time but goes down to about 65 at night.

L.A. County Fair must be going on right now but haven't heard much about it this year.  Other than the outdoor G gauge railroad there is nothing else I want to see there.  They still  have three large steam engines on display over there even though the Big Boy was sent back to Cheyenne this year but I have seen them many times.

later,

Ray

Dig a hole, roll me in, cover me up, I will not try to get out.  Too tired.  At pond at 7AM.  Built big stand for Wifey's big rain barrel.  Hunters Haven dropping off three Remington 700's.  Recall on triggers.  Bought Timney triggers to replace them instead of sending them back.  We ship one in store back and it came back with an 8 lb. trigger pull [horrible].  then hit the road to lake house, service JD mower and mowed the 1 1/2 lots [no neighbors].  Drove home.  Just walked in.  Shower time.

Evening all!

Humid and cloudy all day and now it's pouring.  Supposed to be only in the low 60's tomorrow.  It's true what they say about Toronto...only two seasons...winter and construction.

The new Lionel catalog got my heart racing a bit so I made up a greedy little list for Xmas.

Santa needs to bring me a NYC ten wheeler so that I finally have something in steam with Legacy.  Sure, the big steam is nice but I still can't watch a big boy on a 072 curve without cringing.

A 3 pack of hoppers...no preference...just surprise me.

The strangest offering in the catalog  is the unpowered RDC Budd car. All by itself it just seems weird they'd offer it that way.  Still, it's exactly what I need. It would be a perfect addition to the powered baggage and dummy coach from the late '70's that I already have.

And in the correct road name and all, RT!  Funny that I just pulled my set of RDC's out of deep storage last week.  Gave them a lube job and after a test run I rediscovered their main issue...the couplers wouldn't hold tight, often leaving the dummy stranded.  Then I remembered why I spent $15,000 on orthodontics for the wife...an endless supply of tiny elastic bands.Yes  Slipped one around the neck of each coupler and they positively locked closed.  A perfect fix for any of the coupler type that have the magnetic button.  I'm ready for any local runs now!
