This thread is awesome.

Should we start a thread on that?

I call 'em like I see 'em.  Can I object to your objection, or is that also not a legit part of the thread?

Maybe? It appears you would need to seek the permission of the thread starter.

I also hope Anderson surrounds himself with experienced railroaders.  And at least we seem to agree the seat space reduction was a dumb idea.

So what you are saying is that you can bring up any subject any time no matter the title or intent  of the person who started it. Is this so?

No, you are thinking in black and white absolutes, with no wiggle room in between.  Conversations wander, a quick review reveals that this one shifted toward airlines by comparing their safety stats to Amtrak, and then the difficulties of the respective dispatching systems were compared.  At that point you complained about the topic changing, and the community responded by changing the topic again.  And here we are.

243129

Perhaps this is an internet 'thing'

Yes.

Another 'thing' relevent to this thread is the Streisand Effect...

243129

In a 'live' discussion on a certain subject if you veered off to a different subject you would be removed from the discussion.

In a formal investigation or meeting at work, maybe.  But not in leisurely conversation among friends.  Especially when the discussion "creep" is relatively slow and orderly, as it has been on here.

I do not know your background apart that you work/worked for Amtrak, and seem to have significant railroad experience.  I want to respect you for that, but your recent posts are making you come across like the worst kind of weed weasel.  I hope that is not your true persona.

"Weed weasel" because I wanted to stay on topic? I object to your name calling. Is that your true persona?

Airlines and railroad operations are apples and oranges. Two totally different forms of transportation. The new CEO is an airline exec and one of his first suggestions was cutting down leg room to add more seats. I hope he surrounds himself with veteran railroad employees.

Perhaps this is an internet 'thing' that I am not familiar with.

In a 'live' discussion on a certain subject if you veered off to a different subject you would be removed from the discussion.

Or you would leave the discussion because those involved would discuss what they collectively wanted to discuss.  Time for big boy pants!

Does being an annoying person come naturally or did you have to work at it?

I believe you are breaking the forum rules about ad hominem attacks......and straying off topic.

it seems to me that if discussion strays from a topic it's because the participants in the discussion are finding other, related topics more interesting. I'd guess the best way to correct that would be for the topic starter (and self-proclaimed on-topic policeman) to add more, interesting on-topic information to keep people on topic. Batter up!

Deggesty

I do not recall, in the time that I have been participating in these forums, that the original poster ever complained when a thread strayed from the original topic.

Does anyne remember, from a few years back, the original topic of the thread that became a discussion of soft drinks (root beer notably)?

Well you've heard the old adage- "There is a first time for everything". This is a railroad forum is it not? What brings you to respond initially? The topic I assume. I started this thread to talk about Amtrak and the proliferation accidents caused by human error. Is it too much to ask of you (pl) to stay on topic? If you wish to talk about a different subject why not start a thread about it?

Perhaps 243129 has trouble following the bouncing ball (evolving thread)?  As was said above, you don't own the thread, nobody is violating forum rules and maybe the thread topic morphed because the original topic was exhausted and had become boring.

If anything is a clear and present danger for Amtrak the following link identifies the issues.

If the intent of this forum were for a OP to maintain control of their thread, then wouldn't the software allow the OP to moderate the thread themselves?

As that is not the case, I conclude that discussions are meant to be free-floating, as long as they stay polite.

Paul of Covington

   This reminds me---

There was some discussion a year or two ago that surprised me.   I always thought of this forum as an open discussion where participants could present a subject about which everyone else was free to make comments and express opinions, but someone suggested that the person who started the thread owned it and could maintain control over it.   That just never occurred to me, and I still don't see it that way.

If you wanted to change the subject why would you not you start your own thread?

Somehow this thread has segued from Amtrak presenting a clear and present danger to air trafiic controllers???Huh?

Your point?

If you cannot understand what the obvious "point" of my post is....I cannot help you.

I cannot help your snark! You are not the thread police!

I am however the thread starter and would appreciate it if it would stay on topic.

Thread starter or not - you are just another memeber of the forum and have no special powers.  Threads, like conversations in the real world, go where they go no matter where they started.  Time to get over yourself.

"you are just another member of the forum and have no special powers." Just like you...right?

I go with my previous statement. I am the thread starter and would appreciate it if responders would stay on topic.

No dog in this fight, but have you ever listened in to ATC at O'hare? Busiest in terms of Aircraft movements. They land or take off a plane at around 1.5-2 per minute. It's intense. I'd imagine ATC at O'hare is plenty stressed. I'd imagine it's a bunch of Lloyd Bridges as McCroskey over there. "I picked a bad week to quit smoking"..etc and so on.

I have been a CFI and CFII off and on for more than 40 years.  So, I have a few insights into air traffic control.

Ironically, in some respects working the tower – ground, approach, and departure – can be less stressful at a place like O’Hare than an outlying field like Brainard in Hartford, Connecticut, where I worked as an instructor for four years.

Every airplane flying into and out of O’Hare is under positive control.  And most of them are being flown by professional pilots or high time private pilots.  They know the ATC system.

At Brainard, however, the controllers deal with all sorts of pilots, from students who barely know what they are doing to commercial pilots with thousands of flying hours in their log books.  They have to handle a mix of airplanes, i.e. slotting a Lear behind a student in a Cessna 152, while frequently controlling IFR and VFR traffic.

If I were a controller, I would take O’Hare any day as opposed to a tower like Brainard.
