Very nice indeed. The 1996 never looked better than the picture at Wellton Az!

This is the same passenger special when it was at Roseville, CA a day later.
A few weeks back UP 1996 lead a 6 car special (SBSPT 27) across the sunset route from Texas & up into Oregon. Here are a few from that trip.

Loconotes Yahoo GroupUnion Pacific's "C&NW Heritage" SD70ACe 1995 suffered light damage (ditch lights and handrails) when it hit an Anderson Excavating (UP contractor) near Offutt AFB in Bellevue, NE, at 1600 (4:00 pm) Friday, May 14, 2010. The unit and its train (an inspection special) were able to limp into Council Bluffs. There has been local TV and newspaper footage of this incident.

Cajon_92 Well it didn't take long for UP 2010 to make it to California. Here it is on the point of the IDULB 6 out on the Sunset route. A 5.5 earthquake in Mexico and other delays made this a though catch but I managed to catch it along the Salton Sea just before the sun went down. It was a great day for the 1983 to come over the Hill in the lead.
Your 2010 shots look excellent. I hope it comes up to Roseville in the next few months. The 1988 in B&W look great.
I would guess that the old SP SD40-3 in the SD45 body is going to retirement. Good catch since they are moving the older power to a location where they will have an auction to sell them off. They won't be back.

This picture is on my favorite curve at Newcastle. The eastbound tank train had just come by when the 1983 showed up out of the tunnel at Newcastle. Those are real California Poppy flowers below the 1983 rear truck and fuel tank.
This is the 1983 at the Bowman crossovers.
And three more Heritage locomotives. The nose of the 951 is barely in the picture. You had to be there on that day in 1989 and hear the two 4-8-4's working hard to get the real story. This was on the return trip for both locomotives after the display at the LAUPT for the fifty year celebration.
This is one of my pictures in August of 1956 showing four great Heritage locomotives that are gone now.
Here is Miss Katy from a few weeks back working as the rear DPU on the MWCFW 1 in San Timoteo Canyon & in Beaumont. The MWCFW 1 really had heritage power with UP 1988 as a DPU & UP 2687 (ex SP SD45/SD40M-2) up front, although it was dead in train.

The true colors of the Boy Scouts of America is a tricky business. Cub Scouts wear blue uniforms with yellow trim, Boy Scouts wear olive green and Explorers wear dark green. My two Eagle Scout brothers and Life Scout brother would be honored by this locomotive, whatever color it is.
2010 looks pretty ok, not the greatest, but it's better than nothing! Aren't CNW 8646 and 8701 techinically considered heritage units? UP has a note on them basically saying "do not patch or repaint". They were stored for a month or so last year, but instead of storing them at Proviso they were stored at the Illinois Railway Museum who touched up the paint scheme on both units. They look better than ever now! Here's a shot, not my photo! http://www.flickr.com/photos/19531332@N03/4151578629/

I was disapointed on the UP 2010 Boys Scout Locomotive. I expected the unit painted in their true colors of the boy scouts. Oh well! Its great for UP to give recognition to icon organization.
fredswainI've got 6 pictures of the unveiling loaded at the Heritage Locomotives Yahoo Group. It's not that exciting.
I agree it looks like a regular GEVO with decal stickers on it. That is a surprise since the United Way 3300 and the Desert Storm units were painted in their own scheme, but the Union Pacific should get credit for honoring the BSA with this locomotive.

844 @ FREMONT NE:
Awesome! Dakguy201 CAZEPHYR The passenger cars are normally kept in Omaha so the E units work their way by pulling some freight. The 844 and 3985 have done the same duty on their way east many times. I can accept that the E units would be used to pull freight between Cheyenne and Omaha/Council Bluffs as they have to make the trip to marry up with the passenger fleet. However, the picture above has them crossing the Cedar River still pulling freight, and that is a good deal east of there. In addition, why would the E units be based at Cheyenne but the passenger fleet at Omaha? I never knew the E units were based in Cheyenne. THe Heritage units are all based in different regions?

The E units in Iowa on freight is strange but they probably were picking up the passenger set already in place at Chicago or what ever place the passenger set was.
There might be someone on line that knows the details on this particular move and could tell us what really happened.
Let me add the second photo!
Does anyone has any picture of the 8444?
I am not a fan of SP "Heritage" colors I rather see their old SP colors but we usually are used to see dirty locomotives anyway!
Yes the E units are based in Cheyenne along with 6936 (when it's home, currently stored at Portola, CA) and like CZ said they haul freight when heading over to Council Bluffs. The UP heritage units (1982, 1983, 1988, 1989, 1995, & 1996) are system wide runners although it seems at times that 1989 is assigned to Colorado.
Awesome! That is weird to see them pulling freight. I usually see them pulling VIP executive cars.

After leading the MWCFR 3, UP 1995 would return to West Colton on the MFRWC 5 scheduled out of Fresno at 6:00PM. After a # of delays the MFRWC 5 would finally pass through Mojave around 11:30AM. Here are a few shots from the short Mojave-Palmdale chase, originally the MFRWC 5 had an arrival set in West Colton for 8AM but won't arrive until 4:30PM. Worked out for me though... ; )

Thanks for the update. I am not familiar with that area since I have not been there for a long time.
I does look like a nice place to take pictures and the light seems to be good from that location.
Your pictures of the 1995 are very good and that is the first time it has been there. It has been in the Bay area several times and up the coast line when I got it last year, but LA to Fresno is new track for the 1995. We will be watching to see if it goes back to LA or to Roseville when it leaves Fresno.
UP 1995 lead the MWCFR 3 via the Tehachapi pass today. To my knowledge this was 1995's first run over Tehachapi, and it was great to see 95 on the point. Here are a few pictures from the chase, 1995 was put in the hole at Marcel for some southbounds and so Tunnel 9 could be inspected, which ended the chase after the sun went down.

In the beginning:: First day, August 19th, 2006 for the 1996 in Roseville California. The E9 from CSRM also showed up for the unveiling.
Ah, the "Executive" Es. Saw them go past where I worked once. Picked the right time to look out the back door.
silicon212That's an E unit, not an F - you can tell by the number boards - this was early in Conrail's existence and is a 'patched' PC unit.

BNSFwatcher Metro-North Railroad had a lot of "heritage" units: the FL-9s painted in theNew Haven McGinnis orange-black-and white scheme. They also did two of them in New York Central two-tone grey, with lightning stripes scheme. Really cool, although NYC never owned any FL-9s. I think they are gone, now. An AC44-CW would look good in that livery! Well, an AC44-CW even looks good in NS's "Funeral Train" scheme... Hays

Except for the fact that NS doesn't own any AC4400CW's. Also, the FL9's (and other power) painted in the McGinnis madness colors are owned by ConnDOT but operate in the Metro North pool.
I read an article from Railspot and I had to copy paste the information. I would like to see this new Boy Scout Locomotive.

CAZEPHYR Awesome! CZ I think the Katy heritage locomotive it would have look better if they had painterd the traditional colors of green and yellow with words MKT. What do you think? When a railroad uses more than one color paint scheme over the years, It would be hard for me personally to decide which to use. If I had my choice of colors for the SP 1996, I would have used a version of the Black Widow scheme mixed in to the Daylight colors. They are what they are because the Union Pacific decided on the schemes to use. I believe they did look into several schemes for each one, but how they decided on the final one to use is anyone's guess. The older Katy units used the Red color with the star on the front of the E units for the Texas Special and it looked nice. CZ

The one should have been 5511. The one we mentioned is a 2-10-2 in the round house at Cheyenne and is not active since 1957. Sorry, I should have made that correction.
And you are correct, the 5011 is a typical SD70M.
CAZEPHYR but the three E units are part of the real Heritage units much like the 844, 3985 and the 6926, 5011.

Cajon_92 Thanks for the comments Awesome and CZ, UP 4852 brings back the memories 4sure. Of Course CZ and I can recall 1996 looking like that back in early 2009 before it got involved with the 844 in April. 1996 seems to be kept clean these days but it hasn't spent to much time on the LA-Portland run through all the tunnels. If fact before 2/2/2010 1996 hasn't been over the Tehachapi's since Sept. of 09 when it was on the ZLCBR/ZBRLC. Nice set of images CZ. 95 has spent a lot of time around Roseville and Northern California as of late, currently on its way back on the MFRRV. Cajon

That picture at Woodford is taken at one of my favorite locations. The 4852 sure does look like the old SP locomotive type weathering from tunnels and the lack of washing. Maybe it is a SP Heritage.

Uh, have they ever done a locomotive for a sitting president? Did Reagan or Clinton even get one? And does UP have a George W Bush 4343 loco planned?
Of course, now that (Obama supporter) Warren Buffett owns BNSF, they'll probably get to do an Obama locomotive when the time comes.

CAZEPHYR Metro Red Line You know what would be cool? Because the Heritage series SD70ACe locos and the other specially-painted engines are such hits with railfans and modelers alike, I'd like to see UP specially paint locos for each state in the union that the railroad operates in - for example a "California" loco, a "Nebraska" loco, a "Utah" loco, etc. It would be a perfect fit for its "Building America" branding campaign. Maybe number the locos the year they entered the union. Sounds like a good idea to me, but you should email your thoughts to the Union Pacific Public Relations Department. They might consider the idea but would probably limit their states to the ones they operate in normally. CZ

Great Idea!
Tugboat Tony Thanks for the info on the other UP5511. I didn't know they had any other steam engines besides the UP844, and UP3985

They have the 838 also in the roundhouse It has been used for parts over the years to keep the 844 running, but it is still around.
Awesome! CSSHEGEWISCH UP 96 may be the steam shop switcher but it's also a product of the SW10 rebuilding program by UP, which gives it its distinctive "hammerhead" appearance. I thought it look like Mahi-Mahi!

Most of the SW10's were rebuilds from SW7's and SW9's, which date back to about 1950 or so.
This is the 1995 as a DPU southbound at Roseville today near the Y.

Well I'm not sure of the hole back stroy behind #96, but it is used to switch the steam shops in Cheyenne, WY. It's also used to pull 844 & 3985 out before fully fired up.
Cajon_92 Awesome! Cajon_92 Top notch shots CZ. 1995 seems to be spending much more time in California as well as the western part of the US the last few months, especially when compared to 2006- early 2009. I caught 1995 several times in Cajon over the summer and more recently in San Timoteo Canyon w/ 1996. I included a picture of 1995 at Pine Lodge, CA back on 7/28/2009, on the KG1LA-26. Cajon I thought UP has a same color locomotive with the Operation livesaver. Does anyone have the road number? I believe the engines that you are refering to are the former C&NW AC4400s. UP 1995 is the C&NW heritage unit, but these units were purchsed by C&NW and carried the OLS decals on them, after UP bought the C&NW in 1995 some of the units were repainted (over time) however some stayed in C&NW colors w/the OLS decals. They are all patched at this time and wear #s: UP 6703-6737 former C&NW 8801-8835. Below is a picture I took of the final unit UP 6737 on the Oak Creek lead west of Mojave, CA by the Oak Creek-Portland Cement Co. cement plant in April 2009. Cajon

I found this inventory about the heritage units. I never heard about #96 ? Does anyone has a picture?
Yes all of the OL UP units are ex CNW. There is one unit painted full colors not sure what the number is.
Cajon_92 Tugboat Tony What 5011 (5511?) are you talking about? the UP5011 is a plain jane SD70, and the 5511 is a C45? or did some other road paint up heritage units? Yes currently UP 5511 is a C45ACCTE (pictured below at Cameron,CA) but as seen on page 1 of this thread UP 5511 was once a 2-10-2. This 2-10-2 is still kept at Union Pacific's steam shops in Cheyenne, WY but isn't operational (2 my knowledge) and it may be being used for parts just like UP 838 is being used for. From recent pictures I've seen 5511 still looks good sitting in the steam shops. Cajon

Nice picture of the present day 5511.
This is the 5511 in the remaining portion of the roundhouse at Cheyenne.
This is the 1983 looking a little cleaner on a business train at Newcastle in 2008. It does keep the WP colors alive very nicely.
Lets not forget about 1983! Here is UP 1983 near Swarthout Canyon road back in Aug of 09 on the KG1LA-09. I would say my favorite heritage units are 1996, 1988, & 1983.
The WP LIVES!!

Very nice picture on the curve and is that snow on the far left mountain behind it?
Thanks CZ, and yes that is snow way back there. There were several peaks with snow but nothing down low. It was a great chase, got many run-bys.
Here is 1996 & 1995 in San Timoteo Canyon with the 2 KG2LB-19.
And the next day, the 1995 is going north to Seattle on a bare table.
Bare table is north out of Roseville on 1/31/2010.
And here is the 1995 last night in Colfax on 1/30/2010 after dark.
This is the 1995 at Rocklin.

The Butler fredswain FWIW: UP 4141 has been in storage in Little Rock, Ak since last summer so don't expect to see it around for a while. Since many things presidential are planned long in advance, it is already known that someday when Pres. Bush senior (41) dies, that engine will pull his funeral train across the country. For those who haven't already seen it, look up the Iowa Interstate RR's new Rock Island Heritage engine. It is beautiful! Here is a photo: Photo by: Mid-America Car, As shown in Trains News Wire story, "Iowa Interstate's Rock Island 'Heritage Unit' emerges" (January 18, 2010) -Thanks Crandell

That is one beautiful machine. That color scheme really accentuates the looks of the GEVO.
The 1989 is a great looking locomotive for sure. The Katy is probably just about even with the 1989 for my money, but they both are great.
I think my favorite Heritage unit is the 1989 Rio Grande (UP)
I think they should keep this style of locomotive.

I agree, IAIS 513 is a great looking unit.
Originally UP had planned to merge with the Rock Island but by the time it was approved by the ICC the Rock had slipped into a bad money situation along with other problems and the UP backed away from the merger. The Rock Island filed for Bankruptcy in Mar. of 1975, and struggled on until 1980 when it was shut down. RI units and rolling stock were sold off, as well as RI trackage. Any corrections welcome, but I'm fairly sure this is how it went down.
Oh, she's gorgeous!!!

I have some shots of the 5511 in the roundhouse many years ago. It will take some time to find them but I will look for it. This is the only one I had scanned so here it is. The locomotive looks nice overall and has been painted some time ago when it was displayed for one of the open houses a few years ago.
One time when I visited the roundhouse many year ago, they had a steam line near the left hand valve motion of the 5511 and the vapor was leaking and it looked like the 5511 was under steam. It was not under steam and never has been since retired, but the effect was really great.

I agree, 4141, 2001, 2002, 8444 aren't heritage units, they just have special paint schemes or a special #. The Heritage units are the SD70ACes (1982, 1983, 1988, 1989, 1995, & 1996), but just like CZ said the real heritage units are 844, 3985, 6936, 5011 and the E units. The one thing that can be said about the E9s is they aren't really E9s anymore since they have new prime movers, unlike SP 6051 which is still a true E9 (which is a heritage unit in it's own right, just NOT a UP heritage unit.)
Speaking of 1988 it's currently on the QEWWC-24 en route to West Colton, CA.
THE Olimpic locos are not Heritage units, nor is 4141,..1982 was on the point of an M-EWFW or M HOFW last Thur..on the Waco Sub also,1988 has been a reg on it going south from FT Wth here lately...Hope you can catch them some time in Austin...
Good question and the Union Pacific could answer it better than myself. It was tracked by the Heritage group on Yahoo, but it does not represent a previous railroad that the Union Pacific purchased. It is more in the category of the Olympic units being a special painted locomotive for special recognition of an event, such as the Olympics or the opening of the 41st President of the United States musuem. The 3300 SD40-2 United Way scheme was a special painted locomotive for that charity.
The Union Pacific painted the 951 E9A for the Pre-amble Freedom Train which toured the nation before the actual Freedom train ran. None of these paint schemes were considered Heritage units, but the three E units are part of the real Heritage units much like the 844, 3985 and the 6926, 5511. Let's hope the UP continues to honor the past with their steam and older diesel program.
Challenger
How many E-units are running in their heritage arena?
What about the Bush Unit? Does count to be Heritage?
Cajon_92 I agree with CZ, yes UP has their Heritage SD70ACe fleet, but the real Heritage units are 844, 3985, 6936, etc. UP 2001 & 2002 are still in the Winter Olympic colors but they are up for overhaul in 2010 so get them while you can. 2001 was in Northern California a few weeks back. That blue Olympic paint still looks nice even with the dirt.
Thanks for posting it.
This is a blue Heritage unit from the six official Union Pacific new SD70Ace Heritage units and it was on my birthday at Colfax Ca.
The 2001 and 2002 are tracked by the Yahoo Heritage groups, but I don't believe the Union Pacific considers them as Heritage units. Much like the 3300 painted for special service, the 2001 and 2002 pulled the Olympic train and then when into regular freight service. The Heritage units are the six SD70Ace diesels that were painted for railroads that were purchased by the Union Pacific.
I certainly have taken pictures of the 2001 and 2002 every chance I get and they are great looking locomotives.
I consider the 844 and 3985 real Heritage units along with the E units and the 6936. That and $1.29 will get you coffee at most ARCO's.
