        I'm pretty sure that this is one of the RS3's that Penn Central and later Conrail repowered with a EMD engine. The edges of the hood are too round for an RS1 and thecowl on top of long hood was to clear the taller GM powerplant.  Here's one that is pretty ugly too but appears to be a match!

    I've read that crews hated these units and as a result most were sold off or scrapped by the early eighties!

The TEE cars are now in the Netherlands and are slowly being restored. One cab end has been repainted in original TEE colors: red and cream.

This poor set is still in North Bay Ontario as a waterfront display piece along with a CP caboose and a railroad consolidation.Even through the graphiti and a couple fires, they intend to at least cosmetically restore them. I took this picture when I was up in North Bay this past summer.

To tell you the true not even the blue color will give it is place. It's ugly as sin.

I have seen pictures of FM C-Liners in one of the Canadian passenger schemes, the one with the beaver on the side(?), that I thought looked pretty sharp.

     Now, FM Erie builts, and ALCO DL109's, those were not as attractive.  In my opinion, the early, boxy U-boats had a look only a mother could love.

Except the Sharknose locos, pretty much every diesel built by Baldwin has been aesthetically challenged. They ranged from homely (VO- series and S- series switchers), to ugly (Centipede/Babyface), to double-ugly (Janus), to fugly (DT-6-6-2000 center cab).

The worst looking steam locomotives are 4-4-0s that were built with short smokeboxes and later had them extended.

Not quite. Painting the frame and wheels of your steam locomotive red (the Germans did/do!), now, that is ugly!

I always found the C-Liners to be ugly ducklings.

  I thought they looked rather elegant, in the right paint schemes.

That's ugly as sin! Not even a color would change the shark looking style.

Close your eyes, and picture it in ConRail blue.

 

I could see it Blue....and Conrail Diagram.

I bet you could picture every locomotive in ConRail blue.
