Janesville, WI Turntable and roundhouse.   Mark 1:18 on the video.    Both are operational and in use.     Fond Du Lac, WI used to have both when track owned by Wisconsin Central.    Not sure if CN Preserved it or not.

Janesville, WI (first video mark 1:18)

It's probably pretty late, but I have made a resource of many roundhouses, turntables, and indicators thereof of roundhouses in the USA. most of them are marked off, but if any are missing please tell me.

Thanks, TM05/MatthewB.

Cold you furnish a link to your list? Thanks.

Roundhouse update for Biggar, Saskatchewan GTP

The building's fate has about 2 more months. It now has at least 2 ministers of parliament and heritage Canada supporting the cause as well as the Government of Canada requesting CN's intent on this matter.

It is listed in the top 10 most endangered buildings of Canada and is again gaining interest world wide.

In New Orleans, the NO Public Belt RR maintains a working TT and round house.  Saulte St. Marie Ontario also has a a working TT and roundhouse.  The TT is inside the building.

I don't know of any round houses, but I know of one working turntable that has not been mentioned yet.  It is at the Lahaina station on Maui.  The Sugar Cane Train still runs daily as a tourist attraction and the LK & P RR 2-4-0 turns just outside the station and gift shop in Lahaina.  I wanted to post a picture because it's the only turntable that I've seen that has a wood plank deck rather than an open pit.

For those that model trains, the Atlas turntable has been criticized as not being realistic, but I think that it looks a lot like this prototype turntable.

I live in central Illinois in a small town on the TP&W line, about 10 miles down the road on RT 24 is a town called Forrest, it had an old set of tracks that crossed the TP&W tracks going north and south. I think this is the old Wabash Line. In the North East corner by the intersection of the 2 tracks is a turntable that is still there. Last summer the Wabash Train soc. uncoverd allthe over growth from it and is in the works of restoring the depot and turntable.

TVRM East Chattanooga and on the C&C at Summerville, GA

Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum has an operating turntable in East Chattanooga along the original Southern Railway mainline. The best part is that if you ride one of their trains (along a 3 mile stretch of the previously mentioned line), at the midpoint they bring all of the passengers right alongside the turntable to watch as they turn the engine for the ride back. The kids loved it (and so did our children Wink [;)] )

I cant believe the number of answers but I work at NS's Conway Diesel Shop which is a roundhouse and I operate the turntable there every night. I hope they never decide to get rid of it either and I have 38 years 11 months and 15 days left before i can retire.

Turntables being in short supply in Rock Island IL, the MILW 261 stopped on the Government Bridge and they swung the  bridge around.

The EJ&E has two operating roundhouses and turntables at Joliet and Gary, but with CN planning on expanding both yards when they take over they might not be around much longer. BNSF doesn't have any roundhouses left in the Chicago area, and they just took out the turntable at Eola Yard a week or two ago. CN still has a turntable at Homewood. Two of the nicer roundhouses I've been to are the WSOR roundhouse at Janesville and the IC&E's roundhouse at Nahant Yard in Davenport, IA.

Just an update on the Biggar Roundhouse;

It has been tabled in the House of Commons and is seeking support in the hopes to make it a National Historic Point of Interest. The plans (That I have heard of) is to complete a phase resoration and a full Railway Museum.

If you care to support the cause then please sent an email to biggarmuseum@sasktel.net , all they need would be a name, location and why you would like to see it preserved.*

Here is one not mentioned before in Eureka Springs AR

In Biggar Sask they are going to demolish the roundhouse there. I think it has been used as a turkey coop for many years.

I know this has already been mentioned, but GTW pontiac yard still has an operable turntable. The roundhouse was torn down, but the tracks remain in use. You can check it out in google with the highest zoom. Also, there is still a coaling tower there, as well as in Elberta, MI.

last weekend (8/4/07) was Round House days in Evanston Wyoming.  They are converting the UP round house there into their city offices.  The train show was held in the renovated machine shop.  The turntable still operates but is not used by the UP.

The old Denver, Southpark, and Pacific roundhouse in Como was restored over the last decade or so. It is a great photo spot.

There is a functioning roundhouse and turntable in Sioux City, Iowa.  It houses a partially restored Great Northern steamer and some other railroad equipment.  It is generally open to the public on Saturday mornings in the summer.

There is a functioning TT in Bellmeade, TX(just north of Waco) east of the old Bellmeade Katy Shops/UP Bellmeade Yard. I dont think it is used to turn power, as it really isnt all that big, but it might be able to turn locomotives. It is mostly used to turn boxcars that have busted doors, and can only open on one side. UP used to keep a 4-pack of mixed SW1500 and MP15s nearby.

The kids and I use to enjoy trooping thru the old roundhouse at Jamestown,Ca. but now that it's a State facility it isn"t nearly as enjoyable.
