Just remember that those Google Earth images may be several years old.

Years ago, when the Binghamton yard sat unused, I went in there and took some photos. The place was a bit of a ruin then. Perhaps the D&H or CP Rail fixed it up after they took over.

When I moved to Binghamton back in 1980 or so I would visit nearby Scranton from time to time. At that time the current steamtown site was an abandoned ruin. Conrail had ripped out the turntable and sold it for scrap. All that remained was a weed filled pit. Part of the roundhouse had collapsed as well.

Somewhere in my archives I have photos of the site back then. I have to dig them out and scan them one day.

When the NPS took over one of their first acts was to find the original plans for that turntable. The original manufacturer (American Bridge Works if I recall correctly) was still in business and they reconstructed what was basically an exact replica of the original. I believe the only change was to add handrails for safety.

For those of you who have not seen the site before and after the restoration, it would be hard to believe the change.

Eight Ball [8]Hey, ive been on line with google earth.  This is a satalite that you can type locations into like cities.  You can follow tracks and trains in and about lines and yards.

The originall Roundhouse in Como, Colorado is still standing. They have been renovating it. Also there is one in Leadville.  It has lost its turntable but the roundhouse is still standing and is used. Also the largest active turntable I know of is in Cheyenne, Wyoming and still has part of its original roundhouse in use.

The four-stall, ex-SP roundhouse at Brooklyn Yard in Portland, Ore. has an operating turntable and also houses big steam in the form of ex-SP GS-4 4-8-4 #4449 and ex-SP&S 4-8-4 #700. This is, of course, "Doyle's House of Trains", where Doyle McCormack and friends maintain the 4449 and are currently restoring an ex-ATSF/D&H PA into an NKP "Bluebird".

Several preservation groups use the roundhouse, and the outside tracks hold an eclectic collection of classic rolling stock, including an ex-GN F7A, ex-Utah Railway RSD5, ex-Amtrak F40PH (being repainted into Daylight colors!) and an ex-SP&S/LIRR FA2.

The groups are under the gun, however, as owner UP could evict them any day in order to raze the structure and remove the turntable to extend their intermodal facility here.

The preservation groups have banded together to raise funds and public awareness about the collection and to work on establishing a new shop and museum location about a mile up the UP, ex-SP main line next to the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI).

The OMSI site has access to both the UP and shortline Oregon Pacific's former East Portland Traction line, an old interurban route.Just last December, the groups ran excursions along the OP line behind the 4449 and the 700 to help raise funds for the new facility, and plan to do so again this year.

The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania at Strasburg has an ex-Reading turntable in its outside yard area.

The BNSF turntable at the Vancouver, Wash. yard was relocated there from the railroad's Hoyt Street (Portland) engine terminal after that facility closed in 1996. Hoyt Street was the site where crews refurbished the 4449 for its appearance on the American Freedom Train in 1975-1976.

The former MILW turntable outside the shops at Pigs Eye Yard (Saint Paul) is in daily use serving the diesel service area. Within 100 yards of public access, it sounds a unique horn when in operation.

I Was in the Saint Albans Roundhouse one hot evening in August 1968. I was welcomed by a CV RR employee & told to take all the photos I wanted. He then ran a GP-9 out on the Table asked if I wanted to take a spin on the Turntable. I did not have to think long on that question. We turned the table all the way around (360*) twice then ran it back in. I still have a few of the photos from that night. I was in there a good hour and had left me 8 month pregnant wife in the car. She thought I had been arrested and was very scared when I came back. Still after 38 years she still brings this up. Gee!!!! One of us was having a good time.

The roundhouse in north Green Bay (old Chicago & North Western yard) is still there as of summer 2005, but the turntable has been removed. I think CN uses the roundhouse as a storage and maintenance shed.

The NRHS web site listed above has round houses listed by state. The old SP, now UP, roundhouse and turntable in the Brooklyn Yard in Portland Oregon is still in operation. The roundhouse is down to 3 stalls which houses the SP daylight engine 4449 and SP&S 700. I'm not sure of the engine in the 3rd stall.
The yard is basically a container and trailer yard for UP for shipments south to California etc. and there are plans to expand the yard which would require the turntable and roundhouse be demolished. The engines would be moved to a new as yet to be determined site with access to a railroad. Roy
