Well, folks, it's the beginning of supper time on the east coast, and late lunch on the west coast, but. . .I've got the next round of our FRIDAY FISH FRY under way. There's plenty of cod, haddock, hallibut and perch, along with all the side dishes and desserts, so everyone help yourselves. The fish, fries, corn on the cob and hushpuppies are on the warmer bar; and the cold dishes are in the cooler, by the counter. Chocolate cake is on the counter, also, and the pies are in the pie cooler.
May the road rise to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, the rains fall soft upon your fields and, until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand. An Irish Blessing

Congrats!!! On the High Speed Connection, you'll Never want to go back to Dial-Up!!!
Besides being able to talk on the phone, (if same line) it really is much better.

Nothing like spending the rest of the evening online playing Aces High (Aces up is what they call it) I have gotta addicted to that game it's even funny.
To Joe, and everyone else that had family problems, my thoughts are with you as well.
Happy early St Patrick's Day. If things work out well, maybe John can make soda bread this year.
Don't you just LOVE broadband? It makes surfing the Internet a total pleasure to do. I'm so glad I got EarthLink ADSL just about two years ago to so I could download things a lot faster. In fact, I love it because now I can download podcasts to my new iPod nano 4 GB to listen to.
By the way, the trestle is still burning as I type this. It's going to be a couple of months before things get back to normal on the line.
Me and my girlfriend have decided to take a small trip this weekend to dallas to go see the museum of american railroad-cellections

HAPPY St. PATRICK'S DAY!
THEY CLOSED THE OLD DINER AND DEPOT COFFEE SHOP ETC.?!?!?!?! *sigh* I hate change but I do it all the time, auld lang syne.
They should turn it into a museum, place it on the list of national register of historic places, put up a plaque, have a festival and parade in it's honor, shoot off fireworks on it's anniversary, sing songs about it, make a movie about it, write a book about it so it ends up on the New York Times Best Seller List, sell tickets and run steam train rides from there, let it throw out the first ball in the World Series, and name a drink after it.
Happy St. Pattys Day to ye darlin', now me thinks I'll head to the Irish Pub in celebration. Put a nickle in the jukebox and play "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling"
When Irish eyes are smiling,Sure, 'tis like the morn in Spring. In the lilt of Irish laughterYou can hear the angels sing. When Irish hearts are happy,All the world seems bright and gay.And when Irish eyes are smiling,Sure, they steal your heart away.

Good Saturday morning to one and all! Ironhorseman, welcome to the DD/CS! Love the words to "When Irish Eyes are Smiling!" Of course, since I'm part Irish, I would love that song!!
Dan, thanks for getting breakfast ready, making the coffee, juice, etc. I brought in some cookies, decorated for St. Patty's Day. Regular sugar cookies, w/white icing, and green sprinkles all over them. Don't anyone worry: made sure I brought in enough, so there'll be enough for dessert tonight, after our SATURDAY PIZZA FEST.
Everyone have a good day today, and I hope the sick and ones in hospital are feeling a wee bit better this morning!
Happy St. Patrick's Day!
CW, glad you are back up online.
I've been doing taxes and applying for various colleges. Been busy. A few pages back there was a discussion about lost cats. Several years ago, when my children were little, (okay..make that several several years ago,) I awoke to someone pounding on my front door. I opened it slowly just to have my cat shoved upon me. Apparently, my neighbor, who hated cats, opened his trunk and out popped our cat. Fortunately, he didn't look worse for his adventure, but my neighbor looked like a madman. He was furious. At least the cat had the deceny to wait until he got home to use the litter box.
I, too, enjoyed the Irish song and the Irish blessing. But I am not Irish, not even Scotch/Irish, but there be Scot in my blood, and French and German.

Good morning everyone. I can't wait for the Supreme topping pizza tonight.
I believe that the fire at the trestle in Sacramento is finally out. From what I've read in the Sacramento Bee, I believe that the cleanup could take longer than usual due to the remains of the trestle and the soil being full of creosote, which means special handling (it will have to be shipped to a special landfill designed to handle hazardous materials).
Happy St. Patrick's Day!!
I'm going to go to Council Bluffs today and try to get some pics of the CNW Heritage Unit and the unpatched Dash 9s, since they are supposed to arrive in a little bit. I believe the 6936 is also in Council Bluffs today, so if I get some decent shots, I will post them.
Otherwise, I hope everyone has a great Saint Patrick's Day, and don't drink too much green beer!
Willy
...All that clean up while the crews are trying to get rolling with construction of new trestles. Hope they can work around it {the clean up} and make progress on the new construction.

I couldn't find either the CNW Heritage unit or the 6936. No matter where you go, it's hard to see too deep into the yard and there aren't any roads that go through/over the yard, so if the engines aren't near the edge, you're out of luck. That was the situation today. It wasn't a total loss though as things were really busy today. There was an almost constant parade of trains through Council Bluffs and in just one hour I saw 5 trains. Not too bad, but it would have been nice to see what I was really looking for.
PIZZA FEST is now underway, albeit a bit late.
Seems the Cook and number one helper are Still out getting supplies for the Diner.
All the "Usual Pizzas should be ready, so help your self!!
(including an Anchovie for Jay!!)
Yikes!
I leave for a couple of days and there is four pages of posts in the diner to read. It is going to take a while for me to catch up!. Nice to see you back CW, you are the best cook in the diner and we all missed you (especially your menu planning skills).
I have been off competing at two track meets so I couldn't come in to eat and chat, but i did see some trains on the way to my hammer competition down by the Columbia River ( on the border of Washington and Oregon). I saw a lot of beat up rail cars and mismatched locomotives. Some of the best catches were a blue GN car with the mountain goat on the side and no graffiti. I also saw a CSX engine (which may not seem rare to all you East coaster's but they are uncommon out west) and a Ferromex locomotive. The Ferromoex unit was a first for me and a very rare find especially so far north. Unfortunitly I missed its road number, so i don't know what specific unit it was. I also saw a strangly painted BNSF engine that had what looked like a heritage paint sceme except that it was all different shades of yellow (and of course i didn't catch the road number). I guess trying to watch trains while driving the opposite direction at 60 mph on I-5 is not ideal. I did find a viewing bridge over a small yard though that I might go back and spend a day at next year. I would have stopped and spent the rest of the day there but I didn't want to get stuck in rush hour traffic farther north. (That and my Mom wanted to get home and was a little too tired to indulge my train chasing habbits.) If anyone knows why a Mexican locomotive would be so far north or what was up with the strangly painted BNSF I would love to know.
One happy train geek signing off.
And pardon my spelling mistakes, but i can't seem to type today.

Opps I almost forgot I will take some of that pizza and a large helping of those St. Patricks day cookies.
Happy railfanning.
Mutt, thanks for fixing the pizzas and putting them out on the warmer bar. Didn't think we'd be out that long, but at least I had my hubby to take over for me.
Hope everyone has had a very good day, and hope what's left of the evening, will be just as good for everyone.
Had to pass up pizza tonight for prime rib at a fire department banquet.....
I've got dinner covered for tomorrow - my fire department's famous barbequed chicken, baked beans, coleslaw, macaroni salad, rolls, and pudding for dessert. Your choice of the usual diner beverages.
We're lighting the fire at 7 AM. Chicken will be on the warmer at noon.... None will be muddy....

Have you noticed that firefighters often are among the best cooks around? My second cousin--who retired as a firefighter in the Sunnyvale Public Safety Department about a year ago--is a very good cook indeed.
By the way, UP is moving in a large demolition crew to remove the remains of the wooden trestle. They're going to use special hoppers to remove the creosote-contaminated wood and dirt to special landfill. Once the demolition is complete (hopefully in a about four days!), they'll start work on a new trestle, with one track done first hopefully by early May and the second track done by the end of May.
Good Sunday morning to all!
Coffee is ready, along with fresh oj, oj/tangerine, hot tea, hot chocolate available.
On the warmer bar, you will find, for your breakfast: sausage, bacon, eggs, hash browns, oatmeal, toast, and grits.
Larry, sounds like you've got a very good Sunday Dinner going for us. Will look forward to it.
....SactoGuy, unless the prognosis has changed from earlier reports...UP expects to have one {trestle and track}, up and running by April 1st...!! 2nd trestle and track by May 1st....
It is hard for me to see how they could clear the debris and drive piling {after surveying for their placement, etc.}, and build a trestle deck and all the rest by April 1st....but that seems to be what the reports are indicating.
Time will tell....

It'll be a major miracle if UP can get a single-track trestle up by April 1, 2007! Remember, they have to not only remove the remains of the old trestle, but also remove the soil around it, too! That is a major demolition job that could take up to a week to complete because both the wood from the trestle and the soil are considered hazardous material, which has to be specially handled for shipment to a special landfill.
Good morning, everyone. What a beautiful day it is!
SactoGuy - don't forget that they don't need to completely clear out the debris before they can start driving pilings. Once they have cleared one end, they can begin reconstruction on that end immediately. My guess is that a single track will be up before April 10.
