Regarding the "100 ft rule". There is not 100 foot rule. What the special agent was saying is that the Alaska RR has a 200 ft wide right of way through there and the RR owns the RofW , so to not be tresspassing you have to be 100 ft from the tracks.

RofW's vary in width from 15 ft to miles. The Alaska's evidently is 200 ft. YMMV.

Speaking of tresspassing on the right of way, here's something I saw on TV. As far as stupid people who should know better, they're everywhere and they include "professionals" (perhaps in this case not the right word) who should know better. I was watching one of those TV blooper shows. There was a segment showing a news reporter standing on a railroad track and talking about the importance of railroads in building the country. Then all of a sudden him and the cameramen jumped off the track as there was a UP frieght headed for them from behind the cameramen. From the looks of things it seems that they got out of the way just in time. Will people ever learn?

Speaking of tresspassing on the right of way, here's something I saw on TV. Welcome aboard! I work for a rural county Sheriff's Dept. in NC. I know exactly what you're talking about. I've seen quite a few morons scraped up off the pavement. We haven't had any train/car collisions lately. Last one was a tandem axle dump truck full of landscaping rocks a couple of years ago. Happened on the old Clinchfield line.

Believe it or not, I've actually seen that very thing. Peeled off about 30 ft of the trailer roof. My question to him was "at what point did you realize your trailer wasn't going to fit?" He said he heard the noise but thought it was just barely scraping the bridge and he could but pull it on through. He didn't get out to check until it wouldn't pull any further. He was even sober. Stupid, but sober.

Usually happens on a weekend, at night, and as far away from the nearest railroad bridge official as possible that is qualified to inspect the damage (so the railraod can be tied up in knots untill the bridge is deemed safe to operate over) ....COLT's old Wabash bridge over I-70 at Columbia, MO seems to get hit on a bi-monthly basis, usually a backhoe on a truck trailer. Really amazing to see the amount of abuse that some of these spans can absorb.

Once saw a moving truck stuck in a structural plate/ arch culvert so bad that the fire department had to cut the driver out of the shattered truck cab. (Big time cork in the bottle effect!, Very large square peg in a round hole...)

If you are asking about the layoff? Yes I still have a job. There was a layoff. I have heard anywhere from 40 to 100 people lost their job. VERY SAD. Now the rest of us are going on 32 hour work weeks to try to avoid another one. We were doing ok until 9-11. Then the botton fell out. Almost overnight orders were cancelled. We had an order for 5 birds all for one new company just beginning. They cancelled the order and folded up. We had 3 of then halfway done. It makes me very mad that idiots halfway around the world have such an impact on ALL our lives. [V] [xx(] [:(!] [|)] [:(]

When I was training early in my career, I was posted in Bedford County. N& W's main line through that area crossed over U. S. 460. Near Montvale there was a trestle that had 13' 6" clearence. At least once a week a truck with an over height load would try to fit a 14 ' load under the trestle. More often than not it was a truck carrying a piece of equipment. Several times I got to see D-9 bulldozers lying on the four-lane. It was a miracle but I don't believe that the trestle ever sustained any major damage that required the railroad to shut down the line.

Do you patrol near the "loops"? I want to get down there to take a look. I have several friends that work the Dante yard e-mail me and I could take you up there for the $2.00 tour.
