Was pointing out that north of the Alliance- Ravenna-Grand Island-Lincoln coal line is a big empty void where no railroad goes anymore in Nebraska. NE Nebraska is kinda sparce too. Valentine, NE looks like a metropolis after driving across miles and miles of nuthin, especially at night on US-20 or US-83.

Curious to see where our 82 going on 16 Bob calls home.

Naw, you are too nice to be in trouble. I only live in this state, I don't visit it.

The only lines I know are the ones that I heard about many years ago.

A few years back my driver took me to Chadron. He was curious - for once, I wasn't.

Got a really long nap and opened one eye thru the sandhills and decided it was just a lot of kitty litter. There were no trains, no birds, no trees, no nothing - just an occasional pick-em-up truck and a windmill for, they tell me, the cattle just over that dune over yonder. You probably know more about my state that I do. I just know it is hot and cold. And a lot of both! And has high taxes!

Thanks for all the good responses to my message. I lived in Big Red Country, York, Nebraska. I was born in Omaha. I remember when the Burlington Zephyr came through York---was it about 1937, I think--- . Later I was on Highway 6 going towards Hastings > The Zephyr was running parallel to 6 going toward Denver from Chicago. We were driving around 50-60 mph. It went by us and it made us feel like we were standing here. I live in Arizona now.

Mookie: You say you are 22 years younger than I am!!You are just a kid. My wife is 70 and I always tell her that she is a kid! (Note from Nance: Mookie, it always pays to have someone older than you who thinks you are a kid!!)

Bob - my husband is 5 mos older than I am and I always remind him of that between July and Dec!

York and Omaha - they are both still there! And I got to ride the zephyr a couple of times. Both to Omaha and Colorado. Great fun!

Believe me, the "kids" on this forum will keep you laughing and share a lot of very good information. It's better than TV!

Some advice to all of you;

Take as many train trips and make as many railfan road trips as you can while you are still young and single. When marriage, kids and careers happen, finding time to get away becomes a real challenge.

Master photography and take pictures when oppurtunities arise. The railroad world is changing all the time . What is common place today may be gone tomorrow.

Be careful when railfanning in bad neighborhoods. Be aware of your surroundings and of who is there besides you. If something doesn't feel right,leave,right then,period.
