No idea on the time (I'm interested, too, as I'm only able to make it downtown in the p.m.). The releases I've seen only suggest that we "stay tuned".

Where at what station in Chicago will the engine be displayed?

Well there's only so many tracks at Ogilvie. Shouldn't be that hard to find. Follow the huge crowd of foamers wearing CNW memorabilia. I'm wondering if they'll park it inside towards the entrance, or outside where it would be easier to lift the tarp.

Here's a guess as to what it COULD look like:

i would say they should do it near wherever the historical society holds meetings at. so they can see it easier. that is one nice drawing. if it looks like that, i will be happy

That was a nice drawing. If it'd be like that I think most folks would be happy. I received a confirmation email from UP's PR dept saying that my email had been received and that any response would be within 5 business days. I'm crossing my fingers for the bell...

If I am correct, the engine they are painting for the CNW scheme is the UP8522...Should have an electronic bell like on the new 5200/5300's Gevos and on the BNSF Gevos.

Thanks,
CC

And a Leslie RS5T airhorn with a manual valve.

Cireusly, perhaps we could get the bell speaker near the nose to give the audio effect but probably not.

July 15th at Ogilvie. That's all I have.

Thanks Carl! I hope to be there!

Just one question though: How are the gonna get it there without being seen?[?][:0]

Mike

Just like they did for 4 of the first 5- a lovely blue tarp

Gotcha. Do they just tarp it above the trucks and deadhead it in on a freight to Proviso? Who gets to move it from there to Olgilve? Sorry, I'm feeling inquisitive today!

Mike

My guess is they'll use eather the UPY1433 (UP M19A/Ogilvie switcher) or the UPY727 (another Ogilvie switcher?) to move the CNW unit to the station. They used the UPY1433 to pull the METX162 to Elburn for the service innoguration on 1/23/06.

AMTK161,
UPY 728 is also an Orlgive Switcher not 727.

The unit has already been designed, it will be painted in the next week or so. There's nothing UP will do to change it now. They wouldn't listen to some random person's request anyway, even if you had requested a nose bell a year ago. If it isn't supposed to get a nose bell now, it's not going to get a nose bell. If the designers decided on a nose bell, it will have a nose bell. They haven't done anything special besides paint on the previous heritage units. I didn't see a MARS light on the DRGW unit.

I believe that UPY 728 and 729 are the Ogilvie switchers- they have modified coupler drawbars according to an old issue of NWL.

First of all... My suggestion to put a bell on the nose of the heritage unit like the older SD-40's was a joke that sort of took off. The bell on the nose was a CNW symbol. Now that's heritage! CNW 6000, did you really send an email to the UP PR Dept?? MP36, how much design work does it take to slap an old SD-40 bell on the nose?? Mp36, you've got the ball and the bar in the wrong place on your drawing! The ball and the bar goes under the window (so that the UP can easily patch it in five to ten years). And where's the stinkin bell on the nose? Oh, and the amber strobe light on top?

Just busting some chops on this one... Here's to hoping that MP36 has a sense of humor!

Oh yeah, one other thing... I don't think that a UP painted or patched engine will be moving the CNW heritage unit into OTC. I think ya know where I might be going with this. There are a few people at Proviso who are fans of the CNW who are good at making all CNW lashups.

Agreed on the all CNW lashups. I'm thinking that's why 8701 and 8646 are still in and out of Proviso regularily, at least on the Loco Traces I've seen. Yes I did send the email. I know it had a snowballs chance in hell but what's the worst they can do...ignore it? What's the harm? As Chris30 said it was a joke. I don't care too much what it'll look like as long as it's CNW yellow/green and the ball/bar is on it.

I'm going to be missing the inauguration by a day (I'm heading out there the 16th) although I always do at least a day worth of railfanning on the UP so if I'm extraordinarily lucky I may get to see it in action!

If all goes well, I'll be there for the unveiling. Or at the very least, close by. Some insider information indicates that a UP employee ID is necessary, but another Milwaukeeland railfan and I will be making an attempt at it. Expect some pictures -- if I get them, that is!!!!

If anyone is traveling a fair distance and doesn't want to drive down to Chicago for nothing on the 15th. I'd say wait till the 16th, and don't go to Chicago, but go to IRM for Diesel Days.

arent there even pictures of the unit under the tarp yet? exactly one week left and i'm pretty sure that when a week was left for the DRGW unit, there were pics of it under the tarp by then.
