UP CNW Heritage Unit thread

I've heard that it's supposed to be unveiled in July in Chicago. Does anybody know any more or other details?

well i doubt it will look good. CNW spartan cabs looked the best so nless UP does this heritage stuff to an SD60, i'm not holding my breath.

Those cabs did look nice. If they'd bring back an SD60 would you go for Zito Yellow? LOL!

I'm pretty sure it'll look decent, and why be negative about it at all? UP really could just tack a logo onto a UP engine and get away with it. We're lucky that they're doing this!

I'm not being negative...I do like that Zito Yellow. It'd be cool if they could number it in the "400" series 'cuz these engines are fast enough. I'm already making plans to head to Chi-town to see her when she's unveiled!

True, but they had at least two shades of yellow (regular and zito).

Canary Yellow front half and Zito yellow back half? idont know if DRGW had mountain skylines painted n any of their old locomotives but if that was new to the heritzge unit, can anyone see the CNW one having Chicago's skyline on the cab? in a nice green? i dunno but i just cant picture seeing a lightning stripe on this thing. that scheme seems too new to put on such a locomotive

Max, the SD70ACE is somewhat a spartan cab too. the elevated area for the entry "tunnel" looks like a spartan cab nose. the SD70ACE looks like it's both cabs combined into one. kinda interesting

i love how UP'swebsite claims that it was the CNW merger that brought them to the windy city. oh yeah i'm sure only CNW track led into that huge city. i thought all railroads led into Chicago?

The CNW only had one color scheme, green and yellow. Are you sure about that?

Some of the older, and I mean early diesels, had tiger stripes on them if I'm recalling correctly. I want to say even some of the famed "400" engines did. I'm hoping for the regular CNW Yellow and Green w/o landscapes of any city on it. I do like the "Lightning Stripe" on the -9's. Maybe they'd put "Falcon Service" lettering or "400" lettering on it somewhere.

Thats interesting considering that the UP reached Chicago thru the MP merger.

Here is a post from the Illini rail yahoo group:

The last two CNWs, 8701 and 8646 will be running on the Belvedere auto
train or also known as ABEBE. Currently they are still sitting at
Proviso but should be assigned to that train on the 20th... They may
up a day sooner or later, just all depends... They will assigned to
that run probably for about a month as long as nothing goes wrong with
either of the units. **Keep in mind these units are 13 years old and
starting to show their age**
If everything goes as planned the two units will then meet up with the
CNW Heritage unit after it is completed and run with it for a time. I
don't know what trains it will run on as that is still about a month away.

Stareing into my crystal ball [8] I some how see a green and yellow paint scheme. Looking at some of the previous Hertage units I just see them trying to incoporate the ball and bar logo into the paint scheme.

If they absolutly have to change the paint scheme though. Could take a try doing a wavy thing between the green and yellow (similar to the way the blue and grey wave on an Amtrak Genesis unit) but have it start out on the front end like CNW's old Dash 9s. Kinda invoke the rolling hills of the old Northwestern territory.[2c]

The paint scheme will be based more on the passenger hauling locomotives of the 1940's through the 1960's than the freight locomotives and some of the colors will be staggered in intensity, just like most of the previous U.P. Heritage SD70ACe units.

It will be iconic and bold.

Maybe on One Side they could have Route of the 400 and the other the Falcon Service.

Youd be surprised what it can be. I bet money that the "400" will be on it somewhere. That or the lightning bolt, but I can't really see Falcon Service. It would be really cool if they did put a bell in the nose, but I dont think UP would even think of that.

Does ABBAE go through Ames, IA?
If so, when?

Why? The D&RGW unit didn't.

It is easy to forget the C&EI. I never think of the Mopac as going to Chicago, and I grew up in Mopac Land.
