Jim, yes I too have had lots of problems with hackers this week. You may want to look at upgrading to AOL version 9.0, they offer a free McAffee personal firewall download that will help you quite a bit as it did for me. It notified you of all attempts to hack into your system and lets you deny access to your computer. Eolafan

Alaskaman, it sounds like what you herd was an electronic bell (basically a loud speaker broadcasting a bell "like" sound). The Milwaukee Road gave this system a try in the late 70s thru early 80s, but the crews hated them, and they didn't stay for long. I have herd a recording of one of these bells and they truly are annoying[^].

If they were the same horns as on Amtrak units (before the P42s) I agree. I 'm not sure how many chimes but they did sound good. [:)] [:)]

I agree [:D] the horns on Amtraks F40PHs did sound very good, but on Pentrex's "Those Incredible ALCo's" - Volume III .... Morristown & Erie's C-424........ oh, now thats how a locomotives horn is supposed to sound [:D][;)] Like music to my ears[8D]. I belive they use a 7 or 8 chime horn [:0].

Speaking of horns, how about bells? I posted this idea in another forum but I thought I would add it here too. Some people jump from one thread to another(like I do) but some may not, so that is why I will add it here. Anyway, I have always wanted to see two bells on each loco. One up front and one in the rear. They should be on opposite side of the loco and alternate their rings. I think this would increase their coverage (good safety idea) and make it a pleasant sound. Us railfans would like it. [:)] [:)] [:)]

You're right! It sounded like a radio with a bad signal. I can see/hear why crews hated it... Is that cheaper than the normal kind? Or do they want to make it sound more annoying so people will actually pay attention?

We have a particular engine that comes thru here that has a horn that sounds like it ought to cough and clear it's throat. The bells sound nice and clear, but this one is pretty sick sounding.

I'm not sure if they were cheaper or not but I think the sound they made was supposed to be more of an attention getter that regular bells, well it got my attention through the T.V. lol[:D]

To AltonFan: I agree that the METRA F40 horns did sound really good when they were new, but for some reason many of the ones on the BNSF line sound really crappy now!
