During one of my "Gee work is so boring, what can I find on-line" searches. I found that there were auctions on e-bay selling locomotive horns. I actually bid on a Nathan 5-chime, but the bids quickly zoomed up to over $500. I wasn't going to spend that much, just to have something to use all my hot air with. Incidently, those horns use ALOT of air. So much for my idea of replacing my door bell.

Can you imagine your next door neighbors? In fact neighbors two blocks away would be coming to "visit"!

Ironically, I had given that some thought. But I figured, since I live so close to the tracks, and we have 4 grade crossings in less than a quarter mile, the neighbors probably wouldn't even notice it.[:I] Unless they noticed hearing the horn without the usual rattling of the dishes in the cupboard. [:D]

As for the auctions, it is definitely always "buyer beware". I'm trying to work a deal with (OK deep breath) My sister-in-law's, boyfriend's, uncle (whew [:p]) that works for MOW for the Grand Trunk Western. I'm trying to convince him that he needs to let me look over all the stuff they send to scrap so I can buy the "salvagable" stuff, like old crossbucks, switch stands, etc. Haven't been able to convince him yet, but I keep trying. One needs to be cautious when bidding on rr equipment over ebay or any auction site on the internet, because it might have been stolen from a rr. The Strasburg engine house in New Jersey was hit by burglars back in June, and one of the horns stolen was a Nathan 5-chime. There's a relative thread a few pages back here on the forum, "Theft by Railfans (possibly)," that gives the SMS theft story.

Take care[:)]

To AltonFan: I agree that the METRA F40 horns did sound really good when they were new, but for some reason many of the ones on the BNSF line sound really crappy now!

We have a particular engine that comes thru here that has a horn that sounds like it ought to cough and clear it's throat. The bells sound nice and clear, but this one is pretty sick sounding.

Wow you people are really nice.

Of course we are nice - we have a lot of people watching what we say! So we are on our best behavior - kind of like a first date![:X]

I'm not sure if they were cheaper or not but I think the sound they made was supposed to be more of an attention getter that regular bells, well it got my attention through the T.V. lol[:D]

Alaskaman, it sounds like what you herd was an electronic bell (basically a loud speaker broadcasting a bell "like" sound). The Milwaukee Road gave this system a try in the late 70s thru early 80s, but the crews hated them, and they didn't stay for long. I have herd a recording of one of these bells and they truly are annoying[^].
