Some EMD electrics. A GM6C and a GM10B.

At the time of Conrail's creation, there was still some thinking about electrifying to Pittsburgh which was the PRRs original goal. The electric fleet was old - and becoming obsolete (although the change from 25Hz, 11KVAC hasn't happened yet!) - and with the potential for big orders if the Pittsburgh electrification was built out, EMD built a couple prototypes with the help of ASEA for Conrail to demo.

The PC logo was just a patch job...whatever railroads were folded into Conrail just got renumbered early on, and kept original paint....just like the old un=repainted Conrail engines running around on NS and CSX with CSX and NS numbers 'patched on'...

There once was a complete Pennsylvania Railroad branch line from Elkhart, Indiana to Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Conrail operated that branch line as a complete division for only 3 years.

Conrail literally pulled up most of the tracks between Portage, Michigan and Sturgis, Michigan during 1979 and 1980. There was some track left in Vicksburg so that the Grand Trunk Western could access spurs to the Simpson Paper Mill. Then in 1996 the new owner Fox River phased out rail shipments and eventually closed the Mill. In 2004 Canadian National finshed up the run of trains by removing all the remaining branch and spur tracks.

In 1997 the Conrail Technical Society published a book called Conrail Freight Schedules, 2nd Edition. It is an 80 page book listing all of Conrail's symboled freights.

The book is a very good reference for the manifest, intermodal, mail, and slab trains that Conrail operated. A typical schedule would identify the symbol number, type of train, days of operations, origin and destination and certain cities or control points.

For example train PRPI was a Proviso (UP - Chicago) train running to Conway Yard. The train left at 1300ct with arrival at Conway 1400ET (the following day). Times were also listed for Chicago - Ogden Ave; Chicago - Ashland Ave; Burns Harbor, Elkhart; Toledo; Elyria; Berea; Alliance and Conway.

It is a great reference for Conrail fans and I would recommend it.

In the Kilgore Yard in Kalamzoo, MI, while the GM Stamping Plant was in operation, I photographed a Conrail GP15 sitting in the yard with rows of Conrail Auto Parts Box Cars. Now the parts stamping operation has moved out of the big building, but thankfully the tracks are still in place. I just hope somebody turns the Kilgore Yard in Kalamazoo into an Intermodal Yard since it is so close to Interstate-94.
