Responding to my earlier posting, a Mallet is a compound semi-articulated locomotive based on Wiener's definition. Most North American semi-articulated locomotives of similar layout were simple, and were therefore not Mallets.

In a Mallet, steam was admitted from the boiler to the high-pressure cylinders, usually the rear ones. The steam was exhausted from the high-pressure cylinders to the low-pressure cylinders, where it was used again and then exhausted up the stack.
In a simple articulated, steam was admitted from the boiler to all four cylinders, where it was used and then exhausted up the stack.

OOooooohhhhhh!!!

2nd Ohhhhhhh!. All this time I thought it was named for the tool used to adjust it....or at least a reference to croquet...since mis handling one would resulting in a "sticky wicket"

Anatole being a Frenchman, the name is actually pronounced Mallay, with the accent on the second sylable. I understand it is sometimes pronounced malley. Or mallet, like the tool...

There's a lot of valuable education in here!

I did a search on a railroad term the other day on Google. It was something that is being discussed in one of the threads that I wanted to dig into a little more. Imagine my surprise when several of the hits had the title "Stupid Question Thread.." Even better, consider the poor soul who doesn't know we exist seeing that...

This is one fantastic thread, though, no question!

I thought Amtrak was out of the freight business? I am still seeing LD trains pulling up to 12 road railer cars at least once a week. This week - 2 road railers.

Actually,
It proves how smart we all are.
Only truly smart people would be willing to address their "stupid questions" to the people who can answer them, on a forum designed just for that reason.

The only stupid question is the one not asked.

Any wonder this one thread has the most views, and replies?
I would bet there has been quite a few folks who view this thread, in hopes that their "stupid question" is asked, and answered, by someone else besides themselves.

Amtrak is still hauling mail and also has some outstanding contracts for its Expresstrak refrigerated service.
The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul
