I agree with csxengineer I am an engineer and if someone shuts down locomotives a lot of bab things can and will happen. (1) run away train because air bleeds off and brakes release (hand brakes will not always work) (2) if it is below 32 the water in the engine or engines will freeze up causing loss of locomotives for some time while they are getting overhauled (3) with all of security issues today I do not think that the general public needs to know how to shut down the locomotives that I run, just think about how inportant the locomotives are in delivering the goods that everyone uses (SO THINK ABOUT IT IF SOMEONE DECIDES TO SHUT DOWN LOCOMOTIVES BECAUSE THEY ARE MAKEING NOISE.

You all have to be kidding me.

I've never read somehting more stupid in my life.
Well, actually, that one time I read that book by Paris hilton...

But aside from that, this is Eff'n stupid.

None of the locomotive Engineers I know would treat anyone like a you've all successfully done. Because if it had been that way, I would still have been messing my trousers and also knowing I wouldn't want to step foot on the railraod as an employee, let alone

I hope none of you, really ever ask yourself why people get mad at Engineers, call you guys names, try to skip crossings.. Just scroll up, and see if you can find an answer.

Hmmm, Kevin, you have a good point too. Well, it's to late to resurect my post. Maybe I'll write it again later, besides, how many people are gonna look on a train forum (how many people know they exist!?) to find out how to shut down a locomotive, when they could just look on a search engine, or just blow the locomotive up? Don't mean to sound harsh, but after reading what Kevin had to say, he's right, get real.

I found this whole thread rather amusing, and annoying at the same time, and I really have to agree with Kevin above. I am an instructor pilot in the Air Force, flying the E-4B (Boeing 747-200), and if somebody asks me how turn it off, I'll tell them, and if I am gving a tour, I will show them how it is done. I am proud of what I do, and most of the folks out here pay for the equipment I use, I feel that it is my obligation to show them just what that stuff is and what it does. FYI, I felt the same way flying the B-1B and B-52G years ago!

If a diesel prime mover ever "runs away," that is where it uncontrollably revs, you can pull the coil wire out of the distributor and kill spark to all of the spark plugs. If that doesn't work, you can always pull the rubber fuel line off of the carb and let it run itself outta fuel. There, that's how you do it!

also... for your FYI... becouse of sceurity reasons... aka railroad pesonel that have the job of looking over sights such as this for informtion leaks and what not... im not putting my job on the line to awnser someones question about anything that is too too much detail orianted with locomotive or train opporations... if they want to know that bad... then do like you said... go google it..but im not adding my 2 cents to the details..and infact...i still stand by my origianl statment that unless you work for the railroad..you dont have any real reason to know...

How to shut down a locomotive is a safety issue. The buttons ain't painted red and stuck on the side of the locomotive where you can reach them from the ground for no reason!

The idea is that if something was wrong - that is anything from a fuel leak on the pressure side of the fuel pump, to a fire, to derailment - anyone, including emergency personnel who are not familiar with locomotives, could shut them down.

Anyone remember first gen. locos with mechanical fuel shutoff valves? Any still left out there or have they all be converted to electrical?

CSX you stay on that high horse and I will join you, I being a locomotive engineer just as you know what can happen to the engine when they are shut down. Some people just do not get it, locomotive engines do not have antifreeze in them because of the cost they will freeze up and cause major dammage if they are shut down and not drained just because some jack a** was tired of the noise. Those are my engines and keep your hands off CSX and I went through the training programs to operate them so again keep your f*cking hands off of them.

rodney your alittle off base first off the engine wont freeze up for at least a day with 400 gallons of water it takes time.

kevin i dont care what the public thinks of engineers its never bothered me. when they try and beat me at crossings i give it another notch and try and catch them.

csx and rodney i see your point it would be great pain in the rear to have someone like mookie( sorry mook your the only one i can think of) run up and hit the fuel cut off then run back to her seat so she can watch your rear end while you get out their and crank your engines up. ( girls like that) and when your not watching she run up and do it again. better watch them ones with cell phones they will call a friend and have them cut your train so they can watch the conductors walk.....

Yeah, you guys must be right.

If i were some kind of person wholived near a yard, I would come to a trains forum to ask for the proper directions on how to shut a locomotive so I could turn it down myself.

Say... that's exactly what I would do! I'd dress all in black, sneak into a yard, holding a white peice of paper (8.5 X 11 to be exact) of printed instructions, Id sneak intoa cab, turn on the lights, and look for all these switches and turn them off in sequential order, hopefully in the 10 minutes doing so, no patrol would be alerted by the fact there is a person dressed in black inside a well lit cab reading a peice of paper for 10 minutes trying to locate these buttons.

That's like taking directions on 'how to rob a bank' inside a bank then doing it...

Hey everyone! Give me all your money... wait let me consult my papaer to make sure i've said these words in correct sequential order... give.. me...all.. of...your.. money... uh-oh this sheet doesn't say please.. mrs. Teller.. should I say please.. did the person type this up have no manners or somehting, because i feel that please should be on there..

this one is going to break your heart, no one is going to use your instructions to REALLY 'turn off' a locomotive, I'm really sorry to tell you this.

If someone really wants to shut down a locomotive, they would be wanting to do it in less then 43 secondes. That is the national average for the time it takes to commit faceless, victimless crimes.

That would consist of dropping a match in the fuel tank, or blowing the thing up.

honestly, who the heck would sit there in the cab, when there not supposed to be there reading directions on how to shut a locomotive off.

They may as well bring a big Neon sign:

I'M NOT SUPPOSED TO BE IN THE CAB, BUT I'M TRYING TO SHUT THE LOCOMOTIVE DOWN! IF YOU COULD HELP, THAT'S BE GREAT!

Yeah,i guess that is a little to much neon.

seriously, let's think about this for a few more minutes.

Hitting the EFCO was always good for a laugh or two , good initiation for the newbie !
Another fun trick was to hide in a trailing unit and hit the attendant call button as soon as the engineman started to notch her up . It is hilarious watching a fellow randomly push buttons to stop the bell , Naturally you would relaese the button os soon as the fellow opened the cab door , obviously he was going to look for an electrician. As soon as the bell stopped most guys would make another attempt , as soon as his butt hit the seat , pu***he button again ! After several minutes of laughing , the electrician would show up and of course the locomotive would work great.... until the victim was alone again!

Exactly!
Anyone who works for Union Pacific and reads certain sheets of paper (im not disclosing which, you will know if you work for them) It TELLS employee's tey CANNOT answer "inncoent' questions so really, all the engineers (and me because I do start-up/shut-down/sometimes run) are doing, is well.....THEIR JOB!
And Kevin, mebbe your so sore because your NOT into engine service yet? WHAT makes you a god? Your a conductor/switchman! Not an engineer!
I garuntee you that if someone wanted to know how, they would check here, becasue, as is the case, some people cant keep their ***ed mouth shut.

And Kevin, WHAT THE HELL do you mean by:
QUOTE: I hope none of you, really ever ask yourself why people get mad at Engineers, try to skip crossings.. Just scroll up, and see if you can find an answer.
You think THATS why they race to the crossing? Beacuse their MAD at the ENGINEER? HELL NO! Its because tehy are impatient! You really think they are sitting in the car, waiting for a train to come, going "O BOY! Rodney is the engineer, hes an *** (just an example of course) im gonna go kill myself by dirving in front of him! My kids will never see me again, but hey, I HATE RODNEY!"
Your a dumbass if you think that!

And that remark about LC, man, you sure have a high horse to be saying that kind of stuff!
You know what, I bet YOU dont know how to shut a loco off! And if you look at your post about sneaking in, you sure as HELL dont!

Im off the [soapbox]

and that is just 1 reason brother... but after all the fall out that has taken place becouse of our standing that on this... reminds me of a little thing that happend to me one day on the job...it didnt have to do with shutting down an engin..but shows how some people that think they should be "allowed to get on the train" get when they are turend down
i was running a coal drag on my run..and "we" (my conductor) desided to stop and get some lunch becouse we where goign to be held in a siding for a while waiting on a train meet...so we stop the train..and tie it down... as we are walking over to the store...a man comes up to us and says...are those GE engins..and i say yes... and he says..i use to work for GE in thier accounting department...any chance i can go up inside and take a look.....we told him no...sorry..but we arent alowed to do that...and he goes off on the both of use..rambling on about he should be alowed to becouse he worked for GE and that was a GE engin or something.... he hounded us alll throught the store..***ing and crying becouse we wouldnt let him up on the engins...the point i guess im making is this.. it seems that eveyone anymore thinks they should know eveything about everything... and thats just not how it is....
