I for one am lucky to be able to spell my name. I use a FREE browser add on called ieSpell. You don't have to cut and paste, just click the icon in the tool bar and it checks the spelling of your post.

Good and valid point. In addition, most of us took and some even passed "SPELLING" as a subject in elementary shool, WAY back when.

A message that is correctly spelled out, cpaitalized, and punctuated will appear more coherent and probably be better received (I hope I'm speaking for more than myself here).

We know that there ae people out there who can't spell. Some words can be difficult. But if you can use a keyboard, you should be able to figure out how to write an intelligent, acceptable sentence...and to use references that will help you spell words that you aren't sure of.

The people I work with who talk without thinking are perceived as idiots. People take more time to write on these forums than they do to say the same thing...and they still aren't thinking?

I would like to think about what's being said rather than going through an initial step worrying about how to reconstruct the words and sentences.

So just do your best here, please.

But there are still paper Webster's available. Everyone should have one within reach.

Spell check is a great tool, but it will only catch words that are incorrectly spelled, not when you use the wrong, but correctly spelled word, such as the two times you wrote "than" instead of "then." And, according to my Webster's, it is spell check, not spellcheck, unless you meant to write spell-checker. I agree, it would be nice if more would use a spell-check tool on their computers. There would be less room for misinterpretation of a message. But let us not get too hung up on it. After all, we all sometimes get in a hurry.

That's right. Spellcheck is no substitute for proofreading. A friend wrote a letter to the local newspaper praising his favorite political party for being ethnically diverse, but the editor keyboarding it into the paper's computer used "ethically " instead of "ethnically" which makes a difference. On another occasion a spell checker at the same newspaper turned pianist Murray Perahia into a "pariah." But I'll bet many of the poorest grammarians and spellers who frequent these forums more than make up for it with their model-building skills.

For what it's worth, I tried to type some text using Microsoft Word and transfer it via cut & paste; the forum keeps rejecting my message saying "Your message contains language that our site has been instructed not to accept. Please alter the text of your submission." And I assure you, there was nothing in the message that was either offensive nor vulgar. Go figure.

...Wow...! When I read this initial post on the merits of spelling I figured the poster would get a flood of responses...and of course they are still rolling in.

MN:

I agree, it can be a pain to read some of the posts and figure out what they are asking or saying.

However, while it would be good for more people to be careful, some loose grammar and spelling usage is to be expected, and is part of being on this post.

Also, please keep in mind that people who have a limited grasp of English, particularly those from outside the States, should be encouraged to post here.

Along those lines, I strongly believe that we have had some posts from developmentally disabled adults or even children. I would encourage their participation as well!

Perhaps we can agree to use some the skills they taught us in grade school, but not get too hung up on others' failure to do so?

Sooblue: You just highlighted the problem with spellcheck in that it does not check for grammatical errors. I believe you meant to say "then" rather than "than" in your comments. Spellcheck also does not spell commonly used foreign language words or expressions unless you add it to the dictionary. As you can see we all make mistakes, including me.

Railroad shorthand, seems like a whole lot to do
just to "pass notes", I'm sure most people would
do better if it was important. jackflash

Dear MN; To the best of my knowledge, spellcheck only works on Word and e-mail documents, and is not a feature that can be used in connection with these forum messages. Jim

using spell check
Posted by sooblue on Thursday, June 26, 2003 10:00 PM
One of the things that have always bothered me about this forum is that you railroaders who handle mile long trains with such ease can't spell worth _ _ _ _.
It makes me wonder what grade you managed to stager to.

In an effort to improve your image I will tell you the secret of spell check.

First type your message, than highlight it and right click your mouse and than click on CUT.

Open your word processor and click on paste and your message will appear there.

Click on spellcheck and your message will be corrected.

Than highlight your message and click on cut and take your message back to this forum and right click on the area that you first wrote your message and than click on paste.

Viola!! You are ready to post your message.

Of course you could simply start off writing in your word processor, spellcheck it and than bring it to this forum.

With practice your posts will look like you are well educated and well able to handle a mile long train.

Ed, your trains are shorter so you only have to spellcheck half your message.

Sooblue (this is what I have to do) *lol*
