Well...

Yes it is true everytime you visit a page, there is an IP Address. In fact webservers can identify what browser you were using, what OS and from that you can attempt tell if someone is running Windows9x, Windows2k, Macintosh OS's, Unix, etc.

However, the IP Address alone only tells us -- well not very much. See it doesn't indicate if you're using a PC or a Mac, how big your hard drive is, if you have a 1Ghz or a 286, if you're a single computer or on a network of 5,000 computers connecting via a firewall. It doesn't indicate where you live.

Yes, we could look up an IP Address and figure out who the ISP is, but exact location is another thing. For instance, many IP Addresses used by AOL generally indicate Virginia. The reason is that AOL's host complex is located in Northern Virginia. So a user from Florida might connect through AOL and the IP Address would indicate Virginia.

Many of the IP Addresses used by ISPs get recycled and resused. The IP Address you had this morning might not be the same one you have this afternoon. On the other hand, if you're connecting from work or a university, then the IP would most likely be the same, but the entire location is most likely going be accessing the Internet via a single IP Address.

With that said, an IP Address can be tracked down to an ISP or location (business, university, etc.). That ISP would have logs which could match up the user account in use at the time with that specific IP Address. From there, the ISP could look up the account information for that user account and identify who it was, etc. But ISPs are not known for sharing that type of information willingly.

Sorry, I couldn't help it but I felt compelled to jump in. Don't want to scare people off the Internet. [;)]

I think you're right. Check it out.

QUOTE:
Railroaded on private crossings
Buses would be better to take vehicles off the road because they're not glued to a track.

This is about a oxymoron statement: "requires approval from the state for a private grade crossing of the rail line." (Crossings could derail return of rail service, March 28). Has the Constitution been changed and the people not told?

There are no statutes Federal or state on private crossings anywhere in the United States. Legally, railroads don't even need to put up a sign. They don't have to remove sight obstructions, they don't even blow the whistles at the close to 98,000 private crossings in the U.S., which is well over a third of the total.

When you come up with what a legal private crossing is, please let me know. I had a family member killed at a 79 percent sight-obstructed private crossing with no train whistles. While you're at it, ask the Governor why there are thousands of "public" crossings in the United States that fail the minimum FHWA requirements in the chart http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/TA/ProgMgt/Grants/Sight_Eng.pdf .

By the way, the Stop sign in the picture on your news article was put in by the railroad. It has no legal meaning! A person needs no driver's license on a private road. The railroads just stick them in at private crossings so they can point their finger when they blindside somebody.

The railroad people who installed it have no degree in traffic engineering. Are the sight lines there from 15' to 50' from the near rail of the crossing to see the train according to the track speed? The state doesn't even know the track speed because the robber baron railroads set their own and it sure ain't to the sight lines at the crossings. It's so the trains don't fly off the track.

For example, you stop and can see 250 feet, say. The chart says you need to see 1,450 feet for a 90-mph Amtrak. You pull across and about that time the Amtrak comes out from behind the curtain 250' away. The cops write it up as "failed to stop" when in reality you are caught in a traffic trap which couldn't be better designed if they tried.

Robert Pines
Sullivan, Mo

Hmm...where have we seen a reference to that State of Washington DOT diagram?
http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/TA/ProgMgt/Grants/Sight_Eng.pdf.

It's sad that this person lost a family member in a crossing accident. It would explain the bitterness towards railroads. But please take your crusade to crucify the railroads somewhere else. It's not welcome nor wanted here.

QUOTE: While you're at it, ask the Governor why there are thousands of "public" crossings in the United States that fail the minimum FHWA requirements in the chart

I can tell you the answer to that. The chart your referencing is being referenced out of context. It's part of a larger document which is Local Agency Guidelines for the State of Washington -- not the entire United States. Those are recommendations being made to help improve safety at crossings.

QUOTE: Questions whether train accident was suicide
This is in regards to the story "Autopsy ordered after train fatality at Gibbon; investigation indicates possible suicide."

So the railroad runs up and sticks a Web page in the dead man's car or what? It amazes me trains have three collisions a year in Buffalo County and investigators can say this man committed suicide.

How fast was the train going? What kind of crossing protection was there? Where was the sun? Was it raining, foggy, snowing? What did the event recorder on the train say about speed, whistles, brakes, running lights? What did the black box in the equipment housing have if there was crossing equipment there? Did the equipment work?

What were the sight lines? Did the driver's brakes fail? Did his accelerator stick? Did his vehicle stall? Did the vehicle get a tire off the edge and become hung up? Any outside security cameras showing the crossing area? Did the driver black out? Did the driver have a heart attack?

Were there trees in front of the crossing equipment? Were there vehicles parked in front of the crossing equipment? Was there a rise or fall in the road where the driver comes up on the crossing without having time to stop? Was there another train parked or passing through the area at the same time? Was the driver shoved into the crossing by another vehicle? Was he knocked unconscious and parked on the crossing?

In other words how did you come up with suicide? I could sit right hear with a Web cam and tell the U.P. train, "Hey there is a vehicle parked at the Pawnee Road crossing." Where Pawnee Road is listed in the FRA data base in Buffalo County I have no idea. The man must have built the crossing to commit suicide at.

WAY TO GO, & to Detective JOE, a big round of applause is also due.
So robert pines and missouri are one and the same, and my buddy hit the nail on the head when he said we should check , that this guy would send letters and posting other places besides here. If you are reading this, and I know you do, Thanks Captain.

What I do not understand is why he wished to remain anonymous. Seems to me that if he feels that strongly toward railroad crossing safty, he should be proud to show his name. I am a bit confused as to why he did not show his name.

Because he is a coward, and he knows he is wrong. Ever notice when someone starts a fight in a public meeting or forum, they like to stir things up, even when it dosnt pertain to them? But the instant you try to pin them down, ask for specifics, or their name, they beg off?
This is how they work, too afraid to do any real work , happy to let others do the work for them, allways ready to point out everyone elses mistakes, and ask the others to work harder, but never ready or willing to do anything more that run their mouth.
Just a coward, that simple.

[:D]They did die out, but millions, not thousands of years ago.
I think you have the Pleistocene age confused with the middle ages.
I am Homo-Sapien, a little higher up on the evolutionary ladder than you seem to be.
And, if I may ask, please show me one single racists remark I have ever made?
I never claimed to be better that r. pines, just smarter.
By the way, you should read all of his postings, and the accusations he made, calling us(railroaders) murders, thieves, killers and liars, and those are just the nice things he said.
As the grandson of a german jew, I am well aware of what constitutes racial hatred, and so far, I have yet to see a single racisist remark, besides yours, on this forum.
And pardon my asking, but how, exactly, are you releated to robert pines?
Note a word of caution, if you came here to pick a fight, not only did you come to the right place, you forgot your weapons.
Try reading all of it, and thinking about what you are accusing someone of, before writing about it.
[:0]Of course, you are aware your guility of doing what you just finished accusing me of ?

Mr Blysard,
My apologies to you sir for my words! I am sorry! I was using the two previous posts as an example of how people don't get along with other people simply because of words! We all live on the same planet, and all of us here like trains- we have a commonality. The U.S. is made up of diversity, and there are a lot of other problems in this nation and the world that demand our attention. My apologies to you and to the people of Texas, I was only using words to show my example of intolorance. We CAN get along with each other. I study anthropolgy and I realize how different we all are-we come from different backgrounds, and different locations and have had different experiences in life-my depression nearly killed me and I realized that I only had so much time left if I made out alive-so I want to make the best of it! Again-my apologies to you and the people of Texas-Have a good life!

When they tell you about the glories of diversity, don't believe them. THEY'RE LYING! Think about it. Are the things that make us different the things that bring us together? Is the mulligan stew society they're constructing making us stronger? NONSENSE! Use the brain that God gave you and think. It IS the things we hold in common [Like, maybe, love of liberty? Quaint notion.] that keep us together as a nation and a society. When we no longer share common goals and ideals, it's all over.

Railphotos, Mr. or Mrs unspecified.
No need to offer an apology and none accepted.
Again, had it not not been for intolerance, my grandfather would have not left his entire life behind, and spent the years around WWI in a pow camp, outside of Alvin, Texas. Subquently, I was born here, instead of Germany. Considering the horrendous expression of worldwide intolerance found in WWII, the odds are that,. had he stayed in Germany, I quite possibly, may have neve been born at all.
You stated your a student of anthroplogy, so you should be aware that whenever two cultures encountered each other, invairably, one culture either assimilated the other, or destroyed it. The Romans were masters at this, if a culture failed to adapt to roman rule, and assimilate, it was destroyed. Others did adapt, and became part of the Roman Empire, and still remain influnced by that to this day. Class, race and religious intolerance have been one of the worst, but most predominant motivaters in history. Crusades, World wars, and religious jihads have all resulted from one race or religions need to be superior.
Diversity has a place in the American society too, as do both racial and religious tolerance. But both were not the driving force behind the creation of this country. Both Ben Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson, the two most influentinal writers of the declaration of independence, were slave owners their entire lives.
But they also knew that for a democratic republic, which is what America is, to function, the groundwork and base of its laws have to be a level field for everyone.
My father was a first generation American, whos father spoke only a few words of english. I mayself, couldnt ask you where the bathroom was in german, if my life depended on it. Thats on purpose. Grandfather insisted we become part of the American culture first and foremost, and worry about our european heritiage last.
Now, had you read all of missouris, aka robert pines, aka missouri2 postings, from the beginning, you should have come away with a deep apperication of the off button on your computer. While I will defend to the death his right to hold and hold forth on his opinion and viewpoint, I dont think I have to accept it as truth, nor do I have to remain silent on the subject, for fear of offending him or others.
I am not intolerant of mr pines, only his expression and statements accusing myself and other railroaders of being killers.
But, and read this part carefully.
Under our current legal system, if you accuse some one, or a certain group or company, of commiting a crime, or crimes, and do so in public, you better have ironclad proof of the crimes, and be prepared to defend and explain your accusations in both a public forum, such as this, and a public court of law, which I am certain mr pines will have the oppertunity to do.
Your statement implied that we all should put up with such attacks, and while not rejoice in being insulted and attacked by this person, we should tolerate it. Hogwash, to put it mildly. If he had been consistent in his viewpoint, and resisted the need to attack us, had and not called us killers, liars, thieves, murders and kept his statements civil, most of us would have happily debated him till the cows came home. But, like a rabid animal, he seems to have bitten anyone who came near, and has attacked even those who tried to help him. I venture to say that, had he accused you of intentionaly killing someone out of indefference and greed, you too, would have gotten your dander up a bit.
So the same rules of tolerance and diversity you wi***o candy coat this site with would protect him, and allow him to insult you in the same manner. But I doubt if he had bitten you as badly as he had chewed on a lot of us, you would have been anywhere as tolerant as you want me, or us to be.
Diversity is a wonderful thing, when your discussing food, politics or sex.
Tolerance is a wonderful concept too, when applied to and through laws and a justice system.
But we dont live in a democracy, we live in a democratic republic, where the majority rules. And at times, the majority may decide that one of it members is no longer a productive or useful member, or has become a danger and libality to the majority.
When that happens, the majority has the right, both legal and moral, to shun, banish or imprision the offending party.
Bluntly put, bobby pines has reached the end of my ability to tolerate personal attacks, both upon myself, and my profession. To allow him to continue is to invite more vilolent and dangerous responses on his part. To that end, I invite you to do this.
If you wi***o subject yourself, in the name of tolerance and diversity, to his ranting and raveing and personal attacks, then contact him directly, and both of you go off somewhere else besides this site, and cuss and discuss us intolerant and singleminded railroaders, and please do so at the first possible moment.
I have had enough of his attacks, and intend to defend myself and my profession with all the weapons available to me, the least of which is the leagl right to respond to his attacks in like kind. If it bothers you so much, then feel free to leave.
Tolerance has it limits, and he has traveled the length and width of ours, right up to, and over the edge quite some time ago.
You made mention of having suffered depression. My 16 year old daughter has suffered chronic clinical depression all of her life. I have had to learn tolerance on a day to day basis, dealing with the general publics impression that this diesese must also include mental retardation, or dimisished mental capacity.
Further, most people assume it is a inherited illness, and while research does indicate that someone in the affected person near bloodline may have suffered, the implied assumption that one or both of the parents must also be depressed is a pain in the keister.
If you have succeded in winning the battle with this difficult diesese, I applaude you roundly. It is a daily uphill battle, against not only your own feelings, but the feelings and prejudices of those unaware of the mechanics of the illness.
But this in no way excuses missouris attacks on me personally, or the other folks on this forum.
It may explain his madness, but not excuse it.
Ed
