I knew it was an EMD![:p] Only EMD's have rumble and GE's sound like "ssdshdgsajsdjfsgsjgfjsgsddsdsdsadsa"

I was already debating on whether to see this movie, but after learning of the burning train scene, I've got to see it[:)]!

A Tom Cruise movie that is unrealistic and contains impossibly violent scenes?

Oh, NOOOOOoooo!

But at least they used an Amtrak trainset, and not remnants from "The Canadian" which would probably have been the case if the film came out of British Columbia.

But Tom, say it isn't soooooOOO!

First off, the train was on the West side of the Hudson, on the CSX River Line, passenger trains haven't run on it since 1959. Second, wouldn't the locomotive's fuel tank have exploded from the heat?

no it wouldnt explode...fuel oil is not as volital as say gasoline... it would burn....unless the locomotive hit something to couse the fuel tanks to "spray" fuel into a mist..then it would couse an explotion by a heat sorce igniting the fuel mist...this was shown in test footage on in england on making safer fuel tanks for locomotives on some train wreck show on the history channel..the discovery channgel or TLC..i cant remember what channel it was... it the fuel mist from a cra***hat makes an explotion... the fuel will just burn otherwise...

On the other hand, if it had been left to the Hollywood SX guys, the tanks would have blown up throwing the locomotive several hundred feet in the air with it crashing back on the ground upside down and disappearing in a BLEM.

I saw WOTW again today, and i have to agree with whoever said it was a F59PHI and a Talgo trainset....but i am not exactly sure it was a Talgo trainset. the train appeared to be consisted of superliners to me.

As far as me stating it was a P42 the first time, I was totally shocked there was a train out of control in the first place, and all i saw was a modern, streamlined locomotive.

which opens another can of worms. being that the loco was a F59PHI in leiu of a P42, does that in itself make it possible that the train would run without a crew for a while, on fire as it was?

(this is the part where an engineer with EMD experience comes in!!!)

Now, i do know that this movie is make believe, but i also believe that if aliens do come from another world, they are going to be angry for what we have done on this earth all by ourselves. WWI, WWIII, Vietnam, Korea, Afghanistan, Gulf I, Gulf II, the civil war, and all of t6he other wars i have not mentioned come to mind. if humans are capable of doing those knids of thing to ourselves, what do you think we are going to do to other life in the universe?

would it be possible for a train to runaway like in the movie if everything was fried[?] like all the electrical[?] beside in the movie it fried everything that the beam touched so would/could it also have fried the brakes and/or anyother possiblilty of stoping the train so the train was like a boyscout derby car with no way of stoping it except to derail, come to the end of the line, hit another train, etc.[?]

You would think that the "fried" electrical system would cause the train to go into emercency braking. But, this a make believe movie, and we are talking about martians arn't we?

The really pressing questions are:

1. Since the EMP rendered all things electrical out of service, how come the crossing gates are working?

2. Since the EMP rendered all things electrical out of serice, how come a diesel ELECTRIC engine is working?

To answer CSXtrainredneck's question, it would take a while for enough ot the control circuits to burn through. As several people have mentioned, the thing that would stop the train is not that the control systems are burned through, but that they are working, namely the alertor.

The E.M.P. only affected objects in the immediate area of the lightning storm.I beleive the train was still moving due to its own momentum and that it was set on fire just outside of the town.I really enjoy this thread alot of people are asking good questions and making creative comments lets keep this one going!

A: Because ITS A MOVIE! [8D](theres a guy in a trailer off screen controlling the gates waiting for Stevies signal to pu***he button)

A: Because ITS A MOVIE! [;)](The train only exists inside a computer, so it can be made to do anything, run with no electronics, have steel burn, or even fly and change into a robot if so desired)

Okay, then how come it cost $30 for me and my daughter to go to the theater, each have a drink and share a medium popcorn?

And can the martian death ray be used to pop popcorn?

Sorry Dan thats just plain Greed!

How else do you think they pay Tom Cruise $30 million a picture while those min wage students schlub it working behind the counter?

As for the Heat Ray, I think it might overcook the popcorn, and if you've ever burned popcorn in the microwave, it aint to pleasant an experience.[;)]

PS Toms teeth are perfect because some other schlub in a booth computer enhances the stains out of his teeth in each picture.[:o)]

Nope...still too dangerous...in fact you need to crack the door open, slide all beer and snack food out, then quickly lock the door. The aliens are attracted to beer. I'll be by to pick them up in specially sheilded Suburban....

Sorry Dan, No beer. This one is way too big for beer. Had to stock up on Whiskey instead. If I would have opted to stock up on enough beer to get me through this I would have to sleep verticaly in the corner. Besides whiskey bottles make better malatof cocktailes to get even with them for burning up our trains. But you can still swing by, just don't forget to bring a gas can and a chunk of garden hose.
