I'm not sure if you are either! Then they could keep everythin in house and make EMD their exclusive product!

No, I don't think that UP wants to invest in buying EMD, altho they might invest in a new company that could buy it- as would, I wouldn't be surprised, many other railroads with extra investment cash around, like BNSF.

Definitely both UP and BNSF have an interest in keeping the company open.

If the UP did buy (that's a big "did") EMD, that would really annoy the BNSF. First the UP steals their trains(autos west of the Mississippi) and then they steal the engines too!

Especially since, even tho the GEs aren't as bad as they have been made out here, the C44s are going to be needing replacement within a decade, EMD is the likely home of future purchases.....

hay HAY! I'LL TAKE YOU UP ON THAT OFFER!!
Pretend I'm that jerk, I'd LOVE a 170 mi cab ride with lessons. I've been around trains my whole life. Watched them come and go from the SOO Shorham yard and now I watch them go by on the Spine line South of St Paul MN. but I've never been able to ride in the cab. My dad and my uncles
all worked for the SOO.
I love the railroads.
GE or EMD? come on! If your a real railroader
It doesn't matter because you LOVE it too!
AS LONG AS YOU GET HOME!

Hey Sooblue, Your correct, doesn't really matter what you get on the point when called at your away from home terminal. What really matters is what train your called for! A fast Z,or a 14,000 ton grain train. What would you choose? One will get you home on this 254 mile intra-divisional run in about 5 hrs and the other 10 plus hrs.Running time is 4 hrs 20 mins with no delays for a 60 mph train. When called you know what train you've got but not what the consist is.Useually its 3 C44-9 s with the occasional dash-8,but sometimes we're blessed with a SD-70 or a SD-75.The BNSF has turned into a predominately GE road for frieght with EMD usually found on coal trains. The TRUTH? Wish it was the other way around.Let the coal haulers have the GE's.

As a railfan I would choose the 14,000 ton grain train over the hot shot because "the train" isn't nearly as interesting as the people running it.
I'd enjoy the xtra 5 hours with the crew.
As a crew member, I'd still choose the grain train, at least for one or two years! untill it got old or I couldn't stand someone anymore Ha ha ha.

HA HA HA ? Only a rail fan would choose a train like that. After one trip you'd be begging for mercy or maybe not. Ten hrs is a good trip on a loaded grain train.More like, right up against the hrs of svc law. Average speed of about 30mph.In the sidings for just about every oppossing train.Getting stuck for AMTK #5 or 6 because you won't fit in any siddings but the one your sitting in and AMTK 2hrs away.Probably called for 9pm tie-up at 9am no sleeping allowed. Only food what you brought with you.Bathroom that you'd look at and say, thats it? lol. In a cab that measures 10x8.Thinking if only I caught that Z I'd be home right now in my own bed.Or home with your love ones.I could go on but whats the point, you'd still think you were in heaven or after 2yrs of doing that maybe you'd think you were in purgatory.Good thing is we don't have to work trains like that all the time.Sometimes we get a train restricted to 25mph account its over weight and wide dimension.HA HA HA You'd really like that one.

I said I was a railfan
I'd have more time to "shoot the breaze"
I love "adventures"
Fact is the people in the cab are more important to me than the train.
If I sat in a siding for two hours though, waiting for amtrak I'd have to get out the polish and shine up the engine. I couldn't just sit there.
I guess my engine would leave clean and arrive even cleaner ha ha ha.
You do know you can make a really good pot roast on the exhaust manifold only takes a few hours, two or three.
A friend of mine cooks in the smoke box of her avery steam tractor. First time I saw her pull a chicken out of her smoke box I just about fell.
With all the juice that your engine produces you could have a small fridge and microwave in your cab. Especialy in a GE, it should come standard, hahaha
see ya!

It is true that the GEs will pull more amps, as they have a much better traction motor than EMD.
The 4 cycle engine is much cleaner than the 2 cycle engine. I have seen plenty of EMD 2 cycle engines belch as much and more smoke than GEs do. You can also see the blue smoke in the EMD exhaust from the burnt oil. The best builder will prevail, and sell the most locomotives. Also if a locomotive loads too fast, nuckles can be broken, so the slower loading can be good. EMD sure didnt do too well when they made a 20 cylinder prime mover that loved to chew up and spit out pieces of broken crankshafts!! Who is best???? I would prefer GE over EMD at this time. Their 6000 hp prime movers have their problems, but at least GE's will run for more than a day or two!!!

I've just started into this thread, sop maybe this point's been addressed already, but there goes:

I say good riddance to EMD. GM and its cohorts (oil, rubber, etc. companies) had a big hand in the demise of railroad transportation, especially public transportation, for which they were convicted in federal court, only to be slapped on the hand with a wink and a nod. They stuck us with major air pollution with their product line of petroleum combustion engines, from cars to diesel engines, and dismantled existing interurbans which could have been modernized. America's railroads could have been electrified as in Europe, at a huge savings in maintenance and energy costs.

GE is in the electric business. GM is in the internal combustion business. I vote for GE, aesthetic values be damned.

My mistake yes it is "therailforum" and I,ve been a member and have posted there for a while now.Smart rearend of a donkey.I forgot your a expert in everything that has to do with GE's.You know more about operating, repairing, problem solving, troubleshooting, and fixing RR locomotives then the people who live with them day in and day out.I stand corrected and will never doubt your expertise again.Your a true god when it comes to RRing.
And you rail fans wonder why we RRer's have a bad taste in our mouth when it comes to dealing with you all. Well this guy is the poster child for why we are leery of you all.

LOL

Fellow Railroaders:
This person who is posting as ptt100 is doing a great deal of damage. I suspect that this person is not a railroader at all and gets a perverted pleasure out of mocking people and making them angry. This has gone way beyond a devils advocate and has lured good people into comments they shouldn't make in a public forum. I can not imagine any responsible management employee or one represented by a collective bargaining agreement saying the things that have been said. Maybe it would be helpful if you reported all of this to your Human Resourses department. If not them, your Audit Department's fraud investigators or the police. If this is an employee, give them a chance to root them out. I'm certain your railroad's management would like that person gone too. Whether this person is an employee or not, ignore his/her future posts and deny the pleasure of picking at you. gdc

Thank you Keith. I'd still turn it in, though. You might also alert TRAINS. I'm sure they don't want their site used this way. Their disclaimer says they have the right to edit or eliminate posts. Maybe they should watch ptt100. gdc

ptt100 here is a few facts for you. fact #1 any railfan near the tracks not on public ground will be reported as a trespasser by myself... i may not get you arrested but someone will if your a railfan yourself. fact#2 if you are a managment person in operations then you will be to busy to get on here going thru the paper work generated by all who take this lead.

pt100- If your background is not a fabrication I can only guess that you are a geeky Mech E buried someplace at Roanoake where no one will need to make excuses for your incompetence. How's the pocket protector?!? Geek Boy. If the best you can do is make fun of others for their sentence structure, you should have been an Engli***eacher and left RRing for the men. You would make a GREAT ASSistant Trainmaster(emphasis added) on the NS. Guess you don't dare go to the "Railforum" frankly I'm glad, the air there won't be so polluted...

Todd,
Aren't the EMD prime movers still made in America? Nevertheless, alot of the components of the EMD locomotives are made in America. The final assembly just happens in Canada.

I can't agree more. This is embarrassing how people have acted in this forum. I applod those that got sucked into the name calling and that have appologized. This person, ptt100, who claims to be highly educated yet acts like a 3rd grader makes me wonder for sure. Now, having said that, I do admit that I have learned (or have I) some more about locomotives. I for one would like to hear more about the Hi tech GE's and EMD's and how they compare to the older equipment. Also, I would be one fan who would not want to see EMD fade away. I like all locomotives, even the clunkers that GE, EMD, ALCO, etc have made.
