It is true that the GEs will pull more amps, as they have a much better traction motor than EMD. <br />The 4 cycle engine is much cleaner than the 2 cycle engine. I have seen plenty of EMD 2 cycle engines belch as much and more smoke than GEs do. You can also see the blue smoke in the EMD exhaust from the burnt oil. The best builder will prevail, and sell the most locomotives. Also if a locomotive loads too fast, nuckles can be broken, so the slower loading can be good. EMD sure didnt do too well when they made a 20 cylinder prime mover that loved to chew up and spit out pieces of broken crankshafts!! Who is best???? I would prefer GE over EMD at this time. Their 6000 hp prime movers have their problems, but at least GE's will run for more than a day or two!!!
