ChuckCobleighThere is nothing quite so attention-getting as a big, multi-engined piston-engine prop aircraft flying nearby.
I was in my yard one afternoon when I heard said sound. Shortly thereafter a PBY, still dripping, flew over after what may have been a touch and go at a nearby small lake. I'm not sure the lake is long enough for them to take off from a standing start.

mudchickenLate yesterday morning, heard a peculiar noise outside our 11th floor window at the office. It was a B-17G with a bright red tail slowly moving west. They must be around town flying between the two big civilian airports drumming up business.
There is nothing quite so attention-getting as a big, multi-engined piston-engine prop aircraft flying nearby. We have our annual event at Gillespie Field in El Cajon and often that will feature some formation flying of B-17, B-24 and perhaps a P-51 over my neighborhood. I can imagine what an actual 8th Air Force raid takeoff would have sounded like. Movies don't do that justice, mercifully. Makes a string of SDs pulling uphill sound quite polite by comparison.

Deshler Ohio-crossroads of the B&O Matt eats your fries.YUM! Clinton st viaduct undefeated against too tall trucks!!!(voted to be called the "Clinton St. can opener").
The weekend got off with a bang. A derailment at Landers on Friday afternoon involving an inbound Southwest Service train and a lowboy trailer hung up on a private crossing entering the yard caused several cancellations and delays on the line. I wound up taking the CTA Orange Line to Midway and a Pace suburban bus to my car. Fortunately, I was only about 35 minutes late getting home.
Electroliner 1935Prepare for a Chilling Journey!
The trip went well - nobody scared too badly, and we didn't leave anyone in the woods in the dark...
We use the same location that we use for our pumpkin trains, which run during the day. I'm the patch master - keeping the pumpkins stocked. Between trains, it's pretty quiet, unless I play some music over the sound system I use for scary sounds while the train is "in." Most people would probably wonder a bit if they heard "Help Me, Rhonda" blaring through the woods.
Evening
Csx ran some stuff by Defiance.Looks like the ND&W has some cars to shuffle.Projects to work on.
evening
Ns was clear when I left work.Had some storms roll through the area.Bus was delayed due to downed power lines.Everyone was ok as far as I know.Going to be cooler tomorrow.Might go see what csx runs by Fc.
tree68 Brrrr - +41F here this morning, with reports on the morning amateur radio net of high 30's.

That goes with Adirondack Scenic's website event description
They say the train comes “alive” in a whole different way, on this two-hour round-trip ghost train ride departing from Thendara Station headed to Carter Station. Hear the tales of murder and crimes that left their ghostly imprints in our history.
Brrrr - +41F here this morning, with reports on the morning amateur radio net of high 30's. But it will get into the 70's per the forecast. Then we get wind, and likely some rain.
Hope it's dry tomorrow evening - I'm taking out the "Haunted History" train in the evening, and that involves a walk through the woods. In the dark.
Ns was clear when I left work.Helped Sis with some names and adresses from the weekend.Chores to do here.
Sioux Falls was hit pretty hard by severe weather last night. I hope Murphy Siding, and any other forum friends in the area, was not affected by the multiple tornados in the area.

Went to Deshler this morning to tend to the woodpile.Csx's Toledo sub was quite busy as crews were working around Leipsic. On the way home we saw an I&O train come north through Hamler.Stopped at the Station for lunch too.Saw a csx brandt truck pulling tie gons and the backhoe.Back to work tomorrow.thanks for all the hugs and prayers.
Although my cardiac nurse-practitioner said I could use my push mower on the lawn, the cardiac rehab nurse says, no way! So I have to re-contract with the girl next door, who has, since our last mowing before yesterday, started school and a new job. She says she'll do it for us, though.I go to rehab three days a week, for the next twelve weeks (a total of 36 sessions, even if I have to miss one from time to time). The first one is this afternoon, but at least once a week I have to get up at the crack of dawn to get to these things...not too far away, but involving navigation of one of the worst intersections in the western suburbs--four traffic lights to get through for that one.

Thinking about you, Joe.
Busy two days at a local train show. Felt good to get off my feet and not talk for a while. In fact, when I got home, I mowed the lawn.
Now to get ready for a busy week.
Saw 1 Csx eastbound on the way to Celina.Had to borrow a blue ray player from nephew for Dad's pictures.Poor Matt.He lost a coin flip with Stacey for the last piece of peach pie.I got the last piece of peanut butter(Buckeye) pie.So he got a piece of cherry pie.Tomorrow more hugs.
Good Evening
Thank you Carl.Work and Errands done.Saw a few Ns and Csx while we were running errands. We stopped in Defiance and gave hugs.Neighbors were telling Stacey"Joey" stories.Noticed the ND&W still switching when we were coming home.Tomorrow more things to do.
Our condolences to you and your family, Joe.

Had errands and chores to do yesterday. Mother nature came through overnight and boomed and banged.Work calls.Soon it will be time to give more hugs.
100 degrees here yesterday (football weather?)...no rain for the last three weeks - think we are about due.
Off to BLM today to look for filing map for Boise, Nampa & Owyhee RR (OSL) ....Odd that local Idaho BLM office can't find record of it and the railroad was there 15 years before anyone homesteaded or took out a patent.
Nice day on Sunday to help out (amateur radio) with a running race (two simultaneously, actually - 18.12 miles and a half marathon). Spending over four hours standing in the road was tiring though.
Basically took today off, completely.
No problem with water here. Got 1.61" of rain overnight and this morning, and the lake and St Lawrence River are still above normal...
Morton our friend ask me, if water restrictions are in place, and it rains , can we still water ??. Morty is just 13 yrs. He will be a Rhodes scollor some day.
Y6bs evergreen in my mind
Yesterday in Deshler was good.Worked outside in the park and inside the museum.Csx cleaned up ties on the Nw wye.Sent a westbound with a brand new Up engine on the point. Also had a railfan who brought his own MOW truck. He went to Montana to get it and it was BN green.Mookie was smiling .Mother nature cancelled Matt's group carwash for today.Stuff to catch up on here.
(at least Daniel M. still keeps investing his time and helping out with the mind candy)
jeffhergert I've seen him on the History Channel (back when it had history on it) on documentaries about Pearl Harbor and the Arizona.
Well, that was so long ago, I don’t think anyone would blame you for not making the connection right away!
Today, the wife and I returned from our vacation trip to Hawaii. We visited the Hawaiian Railway Society and rode their train. A remnant of the Oahu Railway and Land Company.
On our flight to Hawaii, the man sitting next to my wife was a navy officer moving to a new assignment on Oahu. He had been assigned to submarine, and while still being a submariner his new assignment didn't have him assigned to a specific Sub. He said he would still have to go out to sea, but only for shorter evaluation type cruises.
Anyway, my wife told him that I worked for a railroad and that I'm a railfan. He said his last assignment had been to the USS Scranton. He gave me a decal that had the Sub's crest on it. A picture of a Submarine with a steam engine pulling a train imposed over it.

He said it was chosen because of Scranton having the Steamtown National Historic Site.
While at the Hawaiian Railway Society, I was talking with one of the volunteers in model railroad display. He introduced me to a couple of other guys. One of them, whom I didn't get a chance to talk to for too long (he was leaving for the day) looked familiar. After he left, the volunteer I'd been talking to said he worked, or had worked, over for the US Park Service at the USS Arizona Memorial and was one of their experts on the subject. Then I realized who he was. I've seen him on the History Channel (back when it had history on it) on documentaries about Pearl Harbor and the Arizona.
You never know who you'll run into.
Got the hostas in - have to go out and soak them down good with the hose tonight - and it'll probably rain.
