Well, drat.
Got a nice video of 4014 eastbound at the J Avenue overpass just west of the Kate Shelley Bridge, but didn't see a waving Kromer in it. Catch you daydreaming, Jeff?

Then, the camera wasn't ready when I finally did see you sitting in the helper unit in Boone.
More pictures to follow...

jeffhergertIt was hot, but not too bad while moving. Or maybe it was, but I just didn't notice it.
Oh my, I can see that. Lucky man.

So shovel the coal, let this rattler roll.

. . . __ . ______
Today was the big day. It turned out a little different than I expected, but was still a great day. I was used on the diesel helper that goes with the train. It's used when a little extra power or dynamic braking is needed. They never used it for power, it was used for dynamic braking to help hold speed a couple of times.
One of the guys who was engineer qualified traded places with me between the stops in Denison and Carroll. He didn't have to, but I was really greatful that he did. I was able to ride the cab. It was hot, but not too bad while moving. Or maybe it was, but I just didn't notice it.
There were about 19 locations with restrictions over bridges, a few 45 mph, the rest 10 or 25 mph. We used the radio to acknowledge those, other temporary and permanent restrictions and signal indications less than clear. The conductor also was in 4014's cab and helped keeping them posted on things.
It certainly brought out the people. Both to ride the train and chase/photograph it. Waiting at the motel this morning for our ride, we talked with a guy from Pittsburgh who came to ride the train. I noticed not only people chasing or waiting for the train, whether railfans or not, but also people working who stopped and took out their cell/smart phones to snap a picture.

Deshler Ohio-crossroads of the B&O Matt eats your fries.YUM! Clinton st viaduct undefeated against too tall trucks!!!(voted to be called the "Clinton St. can opener").
Home after a looooong weekend.
The railroad had a booth at the Boilermaker Health and Fitness Expo (a prelude to the Boilermaker road races). Set up on Thursday, man the booth on Friday and Saturday, and get the heck out of town Sunday morning, so I could run the train in Thendara.
The two major races at the Boilermaker are the 5K (~3 miles) and 15K (~9.3 miles). Between the two there were some 20,000 entrants. It's a big deal - many main roads were closed to allow the race. The kids had some races on Saturday, too.
The elite class of runners were from the usual places - Kenya, Eritria, etc. I forget where the winner was from, but his time for the 15K race was 43 minutes and change - average mile at around 4:44 - or faster than I ever ran a mile by itself.
One of my favorite takeaways from the event, however, was a t-shirt I saw. "Longest beer line in the world - 9.3 miles." The race ends at the FX Matt brewery, home of Utica Club Beer, several Saranac beers (and some soft drinks - the Saranac root beer is pretty good). Oh, and Schultz and Dooley... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqXLFWIuLNE

good morning
Went for breakfast and a walk before it got too warm.Found the ND&W busy dumping ballast on the new siding tracks. Also a bad order car was set off in the new siding as well.Local contractor was hired to clean the car out.Saw a couple of Csx trains as well.Waiting for the phone call from Matt that says he is back. The washer is ready to start the laundry.
Not too bad today if you stay in the shade.Went over and worked on the woodpile in Deshler.Csx was having problems where to fit trains. They also issued a heat advisory for the Garrett sub. They were looking at the willard sub when I left.Getting laundry out of the way now.Matt will have plenty of it tomorrow.
Not too hot now.Ns sent a stack train after work today west.Going to watch niece play ball.Tomorrow it's over to Deshler to tidy things up.
Yes, Jeff, sometimes good things just fall into your pocket.

jeffhergert That Big Boy move on Monday is also a fundraiser for the UP Museum. My wife asked me if I wanted to ride it when it was first announced. I said no, not really. Now it looks like I'm going to ride it after all. I was asked if I was interested in being the engineer-pilot for the Omaha to Boone trip. Well, what could I say, but YES! Jeff

Sometimes you just get cool stuff thrown at you. Can’t say I don’t envy your opportunity.
Latest project here- epoxy-coating the garage floor. Gonna take a break next Monday, though, and head over to Boone with camera. Hey Jeff, check your PMs...
Picked up a couple of sheets of the Golden Spike commemorative stamps today.
Very impressive, including the metallic “gold leaf” ink.
Ns was clear after work.Have some breeze this afternoon.Stacey says leftovers for supper tonight.Chores to do.
Ns has an eastbound powder river coal train in the siding at work.Interesting day in shipping for sure.Guessers say the triple h's are going to hang around for awhile.Chores to do here inside.
Well, the oldest continuously operating County Fair in the country (202 years) is underway. The big event tonight was the parade. I was there as president of the county Firefighters Association to take salutes from the marching units.
Some of the high school bands were decent.
The Italian sausage and lemonade I had afterwards was a tad expensive, but I expect that at such events. And I was hungry.
evening
Ns had the local uptown when I left work. Here in Defiance saw a few trains and the local as well while running errands.Paul some of the Csx crews are upset. They have to take train q 350 and work Garrett,Barr yard and get it to the belt railway in 12 hours. This train has been 10k plus long lately.Chores to do here
Got out on the 4th to exercise the camera (Canon A-1). I had a pleasant outing with a few interesting finds at various locales.
good evening
Ns was clear when I left work.Came home and took care of the yardwork. Some wild rasberry stalks were shooting into the yard zone so I trimmed them back.Guessers are calling for another heat wave next week.
tree68The fireworks at Deshler were good - I watched them on the webcam. Only fireworks I've really seen this year.
Tehachapi had a good 20-minute show, too. Camera pointed right at it. I caught a little of the nearby show from in front of the house, a little blocked but had a good view somewhat a bit over a mile away.
We are about 10 miles inland from Sea World but we could in summers past hear the nightly fireworks pretty well because I guess the sound channels right up Mission Valley. This summer they only do it on Saturday nights, it seems.

Couple of good days on the railroad - I think the rain on Saturday actually brought them out.
Down day today - nothing firm on the schedule.
Good Morning
Matt is on his way on his trip with the church group.Csx was busy at Deshler. They decided to put 2 trains together to run on some. The fireworks were nice last night as well.Mother nature has sent us rain this morning.Going to get things at the store.Back to work tomorrow.
Some folks around here had a Glorious FOrth--skiing--one resort (Snowbird) was open and the evening news reports showed many people (some skimpuly dressed) enjoying going down hill on their skis.
Matt is finishing up project.Stuff for trip is ready he just needs to pack it in the bags.Did errands and chores today.Trimmed back the jungle.Gussers say Fireworks redo might get rained out again tonight.Deshlers might get some rain as well tomorrow.Stay tuned.
Ma Nature got into the act - Single large rainstorm (T&L) parked itself inside the belt freeway and just pounded the crap out of Denver for two hours with pea sized to ping-pong ball sized hail and then quit at dark. (nothing else on radar for the whole state -odd) Locals are now blowing-up the 'hood with illegal Wyoming fireworks. Cat has gone into hiding and the dog is attacking the source of the noise.
Got a heads up that Csx was running the local today. They brought the caboose with them as they shoved cars for scrap into omni.Three of them were mow ballast hoppers.Need to get stuff ready for G+G's hose.Matt can visit fo a bit but he gets to do dishes. He will have more tomorrow night as Defiance has a redo for the fireworks.(got rained out last night).
While at the post office this morning, I watched as a manifest started pulling out of town. The last three units were brand new GEs heading west. I first saw the new paint, then noticed they were all consecutively numbered. UP 7059-7060-7061.
I went to a crossing on the west end of town. They were making a switching move, not actually ready to leave town. (When operating with PTC, once it's intialized, it doesn't recognize the first signal until you are within 1500 feet and requires restricted speed until the leading wheels are past said signal. That's why I thought they were leaving town.) Another railfan I know, past president of the CNWHS, also stopped to take photos. He, like myself had noticed the fresh paint and consecutive numbers.
They were dead-in-consist, no diesel fuel in the tank sight glass, just along for the ride.
Ns sent a westbound stack train after work. They also had an autorack train waiting and the hoppers were still in the siding.Came home and mowed the yard. While finishing up mother nature sent a scattered shower.Felt good.Have chores to do here.Matt has to finish packing for his trip.He also needs to finish a project for his class since he'll be gone next week.
Paul of Covington How far can your fire pumps shoot water?
If we're pushing a fire stream (through a nozzle), something on the order of a couple hundred feet.
When pumping through a hose (large diameter - 5") we can go up to 8,000 feet between pumpers if we want to maintain 1,000 gallons per minute...
Of course, we have to factor in elevation changes, too.
It would take a lot of pumpers to get the water down to you... Given 7-8 mile spacing between fire stations, there would be a lot of mutual aid involved.
But the folks up here sure would be glad to see it gone.
I think the agency that enacted the new plan may realize they messed up, but they can't figure out a way to back it out and still save face.
As I mentioned before, it appears that environmentalists may have played a large role in creating the new plan, to the detriment of property owners along the lake and river.
