Deggesty Paul of Covington Natchitoches: NAH k'tush Yes, Paul, life in Louisiana would be much easier if only the English had arrived first. I think of one of the places along the way from Baton Rouge to Houma--Thibodoux. One Sunday morning, as we were going down to Houma to visit the retired supervisor of cane growing at Southdown Plantation, our oldest brother told my youngest brother and me how to pronouce it--Tibbydough. After spending two months in Baton Rouge just before my last year is high school, I was able to correct my English teacher after she told us that the capital of Louisiana was "BaTONE Rouge;" I simply commented that I had heard no one pronounce the name thus.

DeggestyAs to pronunciation, it's been a while since I have heard Biloxi (BiLUXi) or Pass Christian (ChrisTEEann) mutilated. I wonder what would be done with Ouachita (Washitah) County, Arkansas, where my father's mother was born?
We have our share of mispronouncable names here. Madrid (MAD' drid) is a regular. Chaumont isn't a problem if you're familiar with France (Sha MOH). A street in Watertown is GO tham, not GA tham. Some of the native American names can be a challenge, too.

Deggesty Well, Randy, that's the way it is. We are expecting snow tomorrow and on Wednesday and Thursday. I hope some will make it across the ranges between here and the Front Range,

Carl: Understand the shovelling duty. Had something like that here for six years. For a brief while it was both sides until the new neighbor actually got here. Now we have something of a shovel brigade social club.
Bought a new snowblower after my sister aggravated something in her shoulder shoveling the storm after Thanksgiving, and we haven't had more than a dusting of snow at the house since. Strange winter..........

Pat did our driveway on Saturday evening, because she wanted the exercise. It snowed after she shoveled, but the sun took care of that while we were in church and out to dinner. When we got home, I did the patio and driveway apron, and Pat did the sidewalk. It's all clear and dry now, until the next snow later this week. It still looks pretty out there.Sad news for us: we'll have to ensure that our neighbor's walk is clear as well, for the foreseeable future, too...she passed away about a week ago.I still have to write the letter to go with the reports; it will be quite a package for my Oregon correspondent when it's all put together. Maybe I'll get out on foot and mail it later today.

Carl's estimate of three inches seems right on the mark for our area, too. Shoveled twice on Saturday afternoon and evening and once on Sunday morning. It is some extra work but it's easier than trying to clear it in one shot. The sun came out on Sunday afternoon and the shoveled areas were cleared to bare sidewalk courtesy of some melting.
Friday evening was a bad ride home. There was a small derailment near 47th Street, resulting in a detour through NS 55th Street yard which involved a back-up movement (no problem for push-pulls). I was about an hour late getting home. I heard this morning that some trains ran up to two hours late.
Johnny: We weren't trying to corner the market on snow. More coming today that will hit Raton Pass, Trinidad and La Junta and miss Denver. The people who did not shovel yesterday are paying for it now. (16 degrees now and thick sheets of ice anywhere the snow melted and the snow on the ground has a thick crust.) The people who did not shovel and those who shovelled driveways and not walks are probably looking at citations from the busybodies from the homeowners association. One neighbor did not understand why I shovel out the street gutters with our monoslab walk/curb/gutter. I think she figured it out by now. (no water running down the sidewalk on its way to the drop inlet here that froze overnite at 15 degrees)....Don't think the plows ever made it off the primary streets. They were closing parts of the local belt freeway last night because of the snowmelt turning the pavement into skating rinks in construction zones. There was a claim that some cars slid 150-200 feet off the road.
Paul from Covington: Thanx for sharing. Don't dry-out too much, those three or four feet deep cracks in drought dry soil in your backyard aren't fun either.
Dug out here in Nw Ohio.Had to go get another shovel.Csx sent a few trains by.Going to relax this afternoon.
We're getting some snow, too. We shouldn't get more than three inches or so total, so it's not as bad here as it could be.This afternoon I just hit a wall...couldn't stay awake. I will probably go to bed soon after Pat does (and she should be tired--she shoveled the driveway while I slept a bit). My latest sightings report is finally out...twenty pages of sightings of new(ish) freight cars, secondhand cars, renumbering tables, etc. This is almost all since the start of the year. I'm hoping it will be well received by my fellow carchaeologists. Still looking for that elusive first freight car of the new year!
Looking at the Deshler rail cam - they've been getting snow all day. There's a little flag in the park near the diamond - I can't see it now, which could mean 8-10" vs the 3-4" that was apparently forecast.
MC, you asked us about a week ago to quit hoarding the water, and we were glad to oblige. We had no rain since then except for about 0.2" today, but the ground was so saturated that it's still like walking on Jello out there.
MC, did you persuade the clouds to bypass us? There were a few spots of ice at 5:45 this morning, and we have been told that it will be Wednesday before we get any appreciable precipitation. So far this winter, our snowpack is good--but we also need more to make up for the recent shortfalls.
Suspect Matt may get an early quit --- our promised 3"-5" turned into 8"-10" of really wet stuff with flurries still persisting ... just enough to get scotties bouncing through the un-shovelled parts.
Are we ever gratefull for the extra water. (Denver only had 8.5 inches of water last year and this helps the lawns and evergreens from getting too brown.)
evening
Snow here in Nw Ohio. While doing errands this morning noticed spine cars being stored in the Defiance yard.Friend reported they are also being stored in a siding at Hamler too.Took Matt to work. Will see how long he stays. Will be busy with the shovels tomorrow.(Matt says he wants to sleep in)
Eastbound frieght on Ns with a mid train DPU after work.Local was uptown too.Another gentleman was uptown marking utilities at a crossing.Maybe Ns is finally going to install the new crossing gates. They have only be sitting aside for over a year.Chores to do.Oh yeah snow coming too tomorrow night!!! Weather people are getting too excited.
'Boston Cooler', and it has nothing to do with Boston.
Vernors taste has something to do with ginger being aged for several years in oak barrels. Fred Sanders is usually named as the originator of the ice cream / Vernors drink/float. Now adays, it works best if you can use soft serve ice cream.
mudchicken Light snow after almost sixty degrees yesterday. Large collective sigh of relief in Denver today. Maybe 3-5" of moist snow by tonight.

No snow today - in fact, we have mostly clear skies. The temperature, however, is a full sixty degrees cooler...
Of course, the best way to make sure it doesn't break is to have a spare conveniently on hand. I found slide projector bulbs lasted a lot longer if I had one ready to go!
BaltACD One thing I have learned from my efforts in racing. If something breaks - buy two. If it broke once IT WILL break again. From the Boy Scouts motto - Be Prepared. The bad thing about buying two - when the next one breaks you will likely have forgotten where you placed the second one when you fixed the original break with the first one.
