Deshler Ohio-crossroads of the B&O Matt eats your fries.YUM! Clinton st viaduct undefeated against too tall trucks!!!(voted to be called the "Clinton St. can opener").
From my experiences - I thought the only thing Cabot was into was carbon black. Learn something every day.
Never too old to have a happy childhood!
CShaveRRLarry, that car belongs to the Cabot Corporation, and was for handling fumed silica (not sure what that is, their trade name for it is Cab-o-Sil, which explains the reporting mark. The car itself is equipped with gran-u-flator bags, which inflate as the car is unloaded, enabling the whole boxy car structure to be filled with the commodity. This is similar to some carbon-black cars. The number would have had to be 601040, and it would have been built in 1980 as CABX 601040.
Thanks. The number was hard to read on the paused video - didn't have a straight on shot.
As noted, it looked virtually new - fresh paint and all. Might have had a rebuild.

Ns did have a sign out for Pine Jct.Chores and errands to do today.Ns was clear when I left work.

You're lucky anything is maintained around there.
Not picturing exactly where you be.... Clarke Junction or CP-501? ... Clarke was PRR crossing B&OCT with WAB swinging into a switch just east of the crossing frogs. CP-501 is the shortcut connection to the passenger main north of Chicago Ave at Industrial Hwy. (The gravel ponds there have swimmers with cement shoes?) .... We had a section corner right where EJ&E went over US-20 that the rubber tired bubbas destroyed taking a shortcut
Also, Paul, I'm not sure whether Pine Junction is the correct name for the place I go, toward the north end of Clark(e) Road. The old Pine Junction used to be further west than that, west of where the EJ&E used to go over the B&O and NYC. There was a tower there, which PC named Nero. A friend of mine and I spent a little time in that tower once, with a guy who very much loved his job there, and was good at it.Clark Road, off Airport Road, is quite cratered, and you have to drive very slowly, or be able to avoid the potholes adroitly. I'm adroit, and the big truckers don't seem to care...they're probably the pothole creators.

Most of these "flat" cars were rebuilt from all-door box cars.
I've never been to Pine Junction, it's a little bit off the beaten path and not the easiest place to get to.
Interesting sighting from the train yesterday, a string of welded rail flatcars with the rather appropriate CWRX reporting mark. An NS Dash-9 was the motive power.
Carl - Saw an unusual covered hopper today on the Deshler cam - the profile of the top was unlike anything I've seen. The reporting mark was COSX, I think the car number was 601840. It was painted a very nice green, and it looked like it was reasonably freshly painted.
Paul, have you tried Pine Junction lately? I plan on dropping in for a little while (as much time as I can get away with) on Saturday afternoon, on our way home from the Land of No Trains.
Also
We will not be going to Deshler to watch the diamond replacement.Matt is doing breakfast with his church group. He also has to go to work as well.
evening
Work let us out early.Ns was clear.Went into town. The ND&W was waiting to come and do the sashay and switch move across the diamond. They come in with cars from NS,push cars for csx into the siding then take cars back across the diamond to Ns.Csx sent 2 eastbounds while I was mowing in town.Another issue here in Nw Ohio is a company wants to dig into a water source west of us and sell the water to towns around Toledo.Has locals and officials upset.Going to do a survey and find how how much water is in the aquifier.Need to go do chores.
edblysardIt aint easy, I can tell ya....I hope they start you out with oxy/acetylate and the old way first, it takes a while to get the hang of it, but you end up understanding why and what they are telling you so much better.
My son, who is a master of metal and was a fabricator for Dave Marcis's NASCAR team for a couple of years, says if you can write with a pencil you should be able to weld.
The school has all forms, Oxy/acetylene, Arc, Mig and Tig - and students will get hands on time on each. Each form has its uses where it is the best option.
Elmhurst has got to be one of the few places where 12 trains in 2 1/2 hours is a slow period. I spent a lot of Sunday afternoons there in the early 80's and was never disappointed. Only downtown Hammond seems to have been busier.

Began a beginning Welding class this evening. Don't want to be a pro welder, just want to be able to fix the race car when necessary of make modifications if I can think of some.
This afternoon was a slow one for train-watching at the Peck house, my regular Tuesday venue. Only twelve trains through in 2 1/2 hours (as we used to say on the railroad, we "got the quit").
But the neatest thing about the day was that the last three trains went by simultaneously! I'm used to meets of two trains here, and being able to see that all three tracks were occupied between a set of control points, but this was the first time that three appeared together right in front of me in a mainline situation, with all three moving at speed.
First up (1520) was an eastbound coal train of WEPX gondolas. As it turned out, he was on Track 1...probably about 135 cars, so we're talking close to a mile and a half long.
1520 was "scoot time", and that's all I'd been expecting. The westbound scoot (six cars, Track 3) came by at about 1521. The tall coaches obscured the motive power of a westbound stack train that suddenly materialized on Track 2.
The scoot was by first, and fastest. Then the stack train cleared, while the coal train was still moving along. I figure that with the scoot making his station stop at Lombard, the station platform may also have seen all tracks busy. And I'd bet that the scoot and the stacker were playing tag with each other probably all the way to West Chicago!
Appears a south bound CSX or BNSF haulage intermodal hit some kind of vehicle near here. Unable to investigate more later !
Looks like the Deshler diamond will be replaced on Sunday. Should be interesting - but I've got a class so I'll miss watching it first-hand...
Ns had an eastbound in the siding. The local was uptown as well when I left work.Came home and took care of yardwork. Will be going into town tomorrow after work to take of things there.Time to clean up.
As has been said, "The best laid plans of mice and men gang aft agley." The forces of Nature have cut my trip short, telling Amtrak not to take me to Birmingham later this week. After considering what changes must be made, I decided to go back home earlier thani had planned--leaving Washington Saturday, passing through Chicago the next day (with a layover, of course), and getting home Monday night.
I will be able to catch up on email tomorrow afternoon, Friday, and Saturday and Sunday mornings.
It was wet when I arrived in Boston late last night (held just west of Springfield for about an hour; I do not know what CSX was doing there.

HarrisonHey, was that the Clayton Model Train Show? I was there! I traveled back to Clinton County yesterday, Just beating the rain.
I was the guy in the conductor's uniform.
tree68 When I was walking in to the train show Sunday morning it occurred to me just how nice that cool breeze (50's) felt after the oppressing heat of previous days. The rain arrived midday today, and it's still misting/drizzling.

We had the cooldown a little bit ahead of you, Zug. I had to switch to long jeans from shorts Friday evening. The weekend has been pleasant, and today was a good day for walking and doing yard work (also having a dental appointment, getting a blood draw, and spending an hour in Elmhurst hoping to find a good freight train--finally met one when I was headed away from Elmhurst). We will have warming temperatures through Sunday, with some weather that day and cooler temperatures again on Monday (a week from today).
Ns had an eastbound in the siding when I got off work.Swamp is drying out.Chores to do.
2 days ago it was 95 degrees and I was sweating my ... off running a GP38 with no AC. Today it was 55 and I was wearing a sweatshirt. Crazy.
It's been fun. But it isn't much fun anymore. Signing off for now.

tree68 They're saying the rain might drift north into our area, but for now, It's decent, if cool. Second day of train show is done. Good turnout, and I handed out lots of materials.

Agood trip so, except I was unable to get into the Denver station to see MC.
We left Salt Lake about 27 minutes late (a short, short night for me), gained time here and lost time there, and arrived in Chicago right on time.
I'm off for Boston tonight.
