I will get better, I will return, in what form I don’t know, but I will be back!

Better be back.  Or else the forum will have to turn to people like me for RR wisdom.  And the forum is not ready for that.

I'm not on here all the time, but have been around long enough to read and benefit from much of your knowledge Ed.

I really enjoyed the piece you wrote in the magazine some years ago about what it was like to hire on with the PTRA, and my own later experience hiring on with CN was not dissimilar.

Get well soon, looking forward to reading many more of your posts for many years to come.

Greetings from Alberta

Just 2 minutes ago, I was directed to this forum site via a post on Facebook.  And what I saw first was Jen's writing.  No use to try to describe my feelings from what I first skimmed over and realized what I was reading.  So we won't go into that.  Ed....My warmest thought occurred when I read "I believe in God".....Yes, that pleased me to read that.  I'm a Believer as well Ed.  Nothing more important than one to understand what that means.  But for now.  I shall enter you and your family on my nightly Prayer List, that I do right before heading to bed.  With Prayer, we're talking to the Lord....asking for the Lord's presence to help...a friend.....A long time friend.  That we shall continue doing my friend.  And for your family too.....Quentin

Mookie/Jen,

Until you posted I had no idea Ed was having health problems. He is not one to complainn and he has consistently been one of the most informative and respected posters on this forum.

I am much older than Ed and also have been a smoker most of my life. I can only wish that Ed be granted a reprieve like my older sister was.

Electroliner 1935
like your daughter, Jen.

Electroliner:  I am going to take that as a high compliment.  Actually, I am closer to your age and older than Houston Ed by at least 10 years.  Beth is his daughter - I am just Mookie/Jen  - but he was my mentor when I first started the forums.  He and Mudchicken were always there for me and silly questions.  Trust me - I had some major silly ones, too.

Ed, I am very happy to read your last post. As we get older, we learn how precious life is and how much we would like to keep living. We also find we appreciate more the friends we have and what they mean to us. Especially those like your daughter, Jen.

I have appreciated all of your posts and your sharing of your experiences with us. Thank you. May you beat this and stay with us as  long as you can.

And Mookie, Thanks for the info.

Ed, thanks for taking the effort to type what you did.  I know it was not easy, and you did it for all of us, your loyal readers.  And thanks for your faith.  That in itself will help you, and we do truly look for your total recovery and return.

As Charlie Brown would say "Rats!". Ed is in our thoughts and prayers.

I know that Ed has a sense of humor, as we've seen it a lot on here. Besides, photos of him always show that twinkle in his eye like Sam Elliot or Robert Duvall. So, I hope if Ed can't read this, he has someone read it to him. If he is reading it himself, I -l-l  t-y-p-e  r-e-a-l    s-l-o-w.Clown

It has taken a long time, about one hour or so, just to write this, lots of return and corrections and such.
Lets set it straight…I believe in God….different that most, not quite the organized one most follow, but God notheless.
It happened because I smoked, 45 years or so…nothing more, nothing less.
I am proud of all of my friends here, of all walks of like, of all type of religions…you can all “Just get along”
My daughter, the nut who jumps out of airplanes, will do the heavy typing for me when she can, and Jen does what she can when she can, don't press her okay?

And that's enough about religion.  This is about Ed, not how an individual wishes to express their concern for him and his situation.  I don't care if you pray for someone, or just keep them in your thoughts.  And neither should anyone else.

Ed - You've always been a leader on this forum - hopefully you'll beat this and be back as your old self soon.

Norm, I respect your opinion about religion, but I do have hard evidence to prove you wrong on one respect.   I can attach proof of this statement presented not to prove anything religious, but simply to provide more peace between people of different views:

Today's religions respect one another.  "My belief system is true for me, but I respect that your belief system is true for you."   This is true whether your belief system is atheism or any of the world's rellgions.  Obviously it is not true if "your" "religion" demands that everyone think like "you."

I just received a marvelous document that proves this, and I'll be glad to share it with anyone writing me at daveklepper@yahoo.com.

And let us not get into a religious discssion with bringing up current excesses and mayhem they cause.  I can even prove that at one time worldwide Islam was a very tolerant religion.  And I think most Muslims still are.

I certainly did not mean that because I pray for Ed's health that you should also.  And I certainly did not mean that people should pray the way I pray.

And the others who said they have Ed in their prayers also did not insist that you also pray.   OK?

Dave,

While I respect your opinion I do not think this is an appropriate time to discuss religion. We are discussing the possible fate of one highly respected poster on this forum. I think it only appropriate that we all should wish him well. Ed has been an informative poster who has provided tons of information. I've had private conversations with him and wish him nothing but the best possible outcome.

Same goes for Carl's daughter Linda. I wish her the best. I have a friend who is a ten-year survivor of breast cancer. She is now 54 but ten years ago her family and friends were seriously concerned. With appropriate treatment and positive attitudes Cancer can, if not be beaten, can at least be held at bay.

I can thank my 'lucky stars' that I've never had cancer. It runs in my father's side of the family and I am a smoker.  Nobody ever said truthfully that fate determines your future. Dieties aside as once said, 'You pays your money and takes your chances'. Life isn't fair and sooner or later we all meet our demise. In the mean we can all hope Ed beats the bad things in life.

My post was not intended to criticize anyone but meant to offer moral support to those in need of it.

Norm

Ed, I have long appreciated your posts, and I am grieved to learn of your health difficulties.

May you and your family have all the support you need.

Thanks, Jen (Mookie)!  Many of us appreciate the update, but like many others, I am saddended by your news of Ed's health situation. Ed's contributions and posts have been very informative and interesting. As well his private messages and Christmas contributions have added to the holiday spirits.

Count Ed, Aimee, and the girls in my prayers for Ed's speedy recovery. Houston is at the forefront of Cancer treatments, MD Anderson is a destination that often comes up in conversations arount this neck 'o the woods.  I am sure Ed will have the best of care, and prayers from many others around this country, possibly around the world.

And I believe that Kalmbach has been quite explicit about not wanting ANYTHING religious posted on this forum. All of you claiming to be 'praying" are just exerting your religious preferences on everybody else, and as such constitute 'contentious' subject matter.

Get well Ed, sorry this happened in your thread, but these guys take liberties they shouldn't have

Ed, I noticed that we had not heard much from you lately.   I always looked forward to your posts as the voice of knowledge and reason when the rest of us were getting carried away with speculation and off-the-wall ideas.   We all wish you the best and look forward to hearing from you for a long time.

Ed, I'm praying for your return to good health.
