Well I suppose there comes a time when you should just stay at home and work on your dream pike. That's my plan.
Too bad politicians don't do this. They accumulate tens of millions but never shut up and get weirder and more extreme as they get older.
EHH was another one, a beautiful wife, a spectacular horse farm, but no, gotta drag your arse to work and raise hell.
Fella I work with is 2 years older than me, which is getting way up there and just bought a ginormous house on the lake and has zero intention of retiring, states ten more years minimum. On a good day he knows what day of the week it is, by which I mean he is a bit confused at all times. I don't get it.
Paul Simon should pack it in but how any times to we see multiple 'farewell tours' that never end.
Oh, I hate to be a wet blanket, but if that's Paul Simon's Farewell Tour it's just as well he's packing it in. "It's" not there anymore, time for him to quit and enjoy the fruits of his labors.
I mean, compare it to the second video from 1966 with Art Garfunkel when they were at the height of their powers.
It's a damn shame people get old, but that's life, and you can't stop it.
Paul Simon

tree68 SALfan Don't think anyone has mentioned Locomotion by Little Eva. Other artists have covered the song, but Little Eva's version was the best. Little Eva did it well, but how can you not like the version done by a band who's name was a take-off on the name of a real railroad? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSQOeQakExU

Its kind of hillarious this is the only train related song I can think of, although its not really about trains at all!
I'll add Gladys and the Pips, "Midnight Train to Georgia," and Rod Stewart's rendition of Tom Waite's "Down Town Train." The Waites version is a classic for those who like him.

zugmann tree68 Actually written by Steve Goodman, and covered by many. Arlo's version is just the one that caught the public's ear, and as I recall, he really didn't like the way he performed it. Arlo's version was pure crap compared to Steve's, IMO.

Well I don't know about that, Arlo's was the first version I heard, and I DID like it, but since that time I've heard others. I like Willie Nelson's too, but my own personal favorite is the late Steve Goodman's own, and here it is...

No studio over-production here, just a very talented young man with a guitar and a puckish infectious grin having fun with his creation, the best train song ever written.
What a loss to us all, although I'm sure Steve's looking down on us with satisfaction knowing two things, his song may have done more to save American railroads than any of us may ever know, and his beloved Chicago Cubs finally won the World Series!
And did you catch it? "...they ride their daddy's magic carpet made o' steam..."
Even though it is only mid April that clip from Wanswheel is going to be hard to top for Posting Of The Year.

I just got around to watching this, and holy jeez, those guys are incredible!
I clicked on "Metadata" to see if I could find just where this was filmed and oh, wow! It's Richmond VA!
Has to be the C&O's Fulton Yard, just south and east of the downtown area. I went "full-screen" on the computer and recognized the Confederate Soldiers Monument (in the distance) on Libby Hill.
Fulton Yard's still there, now CSX, but it sure doesn't look like it did back then. From what I can see from the adjacent VA Route 5 it looks like a wasteland.
Watch this video and ask yourself, given the choice where would you prefer to be? At a rock concert with the volume turned up so high you're getting a nosebleed, or in a room with these guys and other railroaders and a keg of beer?
I know where I'd rather be!
PS: When the guys on the caboose waved I waved back! Couldn't help myself.
So long boys, have a safe trip back to the past where you have to stay and where I can't follow.

It's been fun. But it isn't much fun anymore. Signing off for now.
The opinions expressed here represent my own and not those of my employer, any other railroad, company, or person.t fun any
Willie Nelson's City of New Orleans. I can only imagine riding the rails when I listen to this song. One of my favorites!!

It has been mentioned.
One of these days, maybe someone will go through the thread and compile a list of all the songs listed.
Not sure how to post it here, so I will just say it "City of New Orleans" by Arlo Guthrie. Dad loved it and one of the last .45 records he bought, died a year or so later after song became popular. Thought of that when I rode that train two years ago and plan to ride again this summer. Parents and I went to NOLA on the IC years ago, one of our many trips on Dad's pass Had relatives there, all dead now or moved away but I have a friend living there now, so someone to take me around Love that city and love that train.
