We're very proud of her, and her Facebook page suggests that people all over the country and beyond were rooting for her.

Count me in that group, though I haven't watched Jeopardy! in quite a while.  Two impressions: (1) Linda looked quite healthy and I hope that continues and (2) seeing Alex Trebek reminded me of how I reacted to a lot of the folks at my latest (50th) HS reunion several years ago: wow, has he aged. (Of course he has a few years on me, not so much as I'd prefer, but I can't help that.)

Sadly, Linda doesn't look quite as healthy any more, as this episode was filmed in April.  Even at that point, the hair was a wig.  She'd just come off a regimen of radiation for cancer that had reached her brain...the average survival length after that radiation is five months, and she passed that last month.  She's still sounding good, and is glad to have made it this far.

Wow...Alex is 77?  I guess he's entitled to look old!
(Both Pat and I had our 50th reunions last month--some of our classmates looked great, and some look like they've been through the wringer.)

I wouldn't have recognized a Harry Potter Quote, Zug!

So you must be 'way nerdier than I am!  Wink

Zug thought of the day:

I don't know which is nerdier - that someone wrote a Harry Potter quote on a hopper car, or the fact that I recognized it.

It's been fun.  But it isn't much fun anymore.   Signing off for now.

MC, no need to flatten Grand Island...that gal lost tonight, I was told.  I'd hate to have that flyover revert to a set of diamonds!

Coming in second, in that game, was no cause for shame.  It was pure luck--had Linda been able to get even one of those Daily Double answers she would have left ol' what's-her-name in the dust.  As it was, she made no wrong answers at all...the winner made two, and Linda then answered both of those questions correctly.

I thought she sounded a little tense, but things weren't getting to her, and she kept her cool.  The amount that she had at the end would often have been enough to win the day.  Of course, that amount isn't what her "take" is based on...she gets a couple of grand before Uncle Sam and Uncle Moonbeam get their hands on it.

We're very proud of her, and her Facebook page suggests that people all over the country and beyond were rooting for her.

Johnny - I have been tracking Amtrak thru Lincoln for a couple of days.  They seem to be about 3-4 hours late each way.  (3 hours late going east @ Omaha this morning)  They also seem to have made them part of a quiet zone in Lincoln.  I used to be able to hear them even with the windows closed, but now just silence.  The paper sez they are thinking about routing them thru the yard to keep them out of the city.  So, I am not sure where or when or even if you still go thru Lincoln, or if they helicopter you in from the weeds to the depot.

The ever exciting star city - but they can't stop the loud stereos that shake the windows or the loud motorcycles....Grumpy

Yesterday, I had an e-mail note from my niece who, with her husband, lives just outside Orange Park in Florida. She said that the only damage at their house was a tree that fell in the front yard (missing everything but the ground), and they have cut it up. They were without power for twelve hours.

Mookie, I expect to breeze through your home town early next Tuesday morning (A in 0631). You won't need your stilts to look in on me when I return, for I will be in H in 0531--leaving Chicago 1:35 late the next Tuesday afternoon.

Because of trackwork in Colorado, I will cross Wyoming when going east--and Amtrak says that I shoud arrive here 4:30 late Thursday morning. I calculate that we will lose 2:55 going from Chicago to Denver.

Spent the weekend in Dayton, Oh. at the 380th Bomb Group reunion. Fantastic time talking to the 3 group veterans that were able to attend. The stories of their time flying in B-24s in the SouthPacific made the trip. Getting a private pre-opening, behind the ropes opportunity to inspect the B-24 at the Air Force Museum was really special on friday. USAF had us in an hour before opening, pulled back the 'people ropes' and opened up the rear access hatch. Should have seen the 3 vets light up!! a pilot and 2 bombardiers, worth every minute.

Don't hand feed the wildlife....

We have a city ordinance against feeding geese in city parks. It’s supposed to keep the geese from getting too lazy to go out and find food on their own. The bigger problem was that the more aggressive geese were demanding to be fed, and were very in your face about it.

An attack by a rat with a fluffy tail would be an annoyance. An all-out assault by a raging beast with razor sharp teeth who has seen old Alfred Hitchcock movies is a tad more serious.

Remember our discussion about squirrels a few days ago?   Some of our squirrels in a New Orleans neighborhood must have heard about someone electrocuting squirrels and formed a vigilante committee.   There have been four incidents of squirrels attacking people.   Here's a link to the story, but the site is a little squirrely:

For general winds (probably surface), there's a site https://www.windy.com/.  It's pretty handy, even without a storm in the area.

Balt,

If you want accuracy about winds aloft go to NOAA's aviation website.

Having been involved in aviation fo over thirty years I have learned to rely on their  product.

The 'general accuracy' of what that site shows is of more interest - especially with what appears to be world wide coverage.  Looked at the area North of Alutians - the Bearing Sea - WOW!

Irma just a 'footnote' on the Hurricane Centers maps.  Jose looks like he will corkscrew himself offshore of the US.

Here's an interesting surface winds depiction, global, if you drag things around.  You're right about Irma being "off the grid" now, as it were.  I guess the cable "news" outlets will have to find something else about which to obsess.[/quote]

Carl,

I do not see a problem. All of us who post here are on pins and needles wondering what the outom will be and wishing the best to Linda.

I have a woman friend who is a ten year survivor. It is my hope Linda beats the beast and lives a long and fruitful life.

This is the best an old man has to offer. Nobody ever said life was fair. Linda was dealt a bad hand but she has handled it with aplomb.

Having lost one close woman friend to breast cancer back in the seventies and knowing one who had good insurance and made the approprite choices ten years ago I can only hope Linda has those options and can find doctors who can rid her of that disease.

Pardon me for being a bit emotional but breast cancer has struck women I have known. The results were not what I wanted to deal with.\

Thoughts and prayers to you and Linda.

My Comments were intended to show ultimate respect. It was not cancer but an overdose of Prozac that removed the only woman I ever loved from my life. You are facing the loss of one of your progeny and I feel your pain in having to do so.

I hate to use this for "commercial" purposes, but if anyone regularly watches Jeopardy! on TV,

I see no problem whatsoever - especially considering all you've shared with us in the past.  I don't normally watch it, but may have to tune in...

I hate to use this for "commercial" purposes, but if anyone regularly watches Jeopardy! on TV, today's the day that our daughter, (Dr.) Linda Shaver-Gleason, is one of the contestants.  Although this was filmed in April, they can't divulge what went on, so I have no idea whether she won.  But she says she had fun.

(This is my daughter who is suffering from cancer.  She's doing well at the moment, but, as we've found out in the past, things could go south in a hurry.)

As for me, I'm going to go east until it's time for the show locally.

This link will show this week's contestants and also give local times and channels in your zip code, although it doesn't seem to work in Safari, even though the "Submit" button shows an active link.  It does seem to work in IE whatever, though.

Big Smile The best determination I have seen was a B.C. cartoon. B.C. was standing by a wheel that was spinning and had all the weather events shown, and the shill was going to toss a dart at the wheel.  I would guess that was the best there was at the time. Now the T.V.has different colored splotches and a spiel that might work (or not). I just look out the backdoor window ___seems  to work. No trains were harmed by this.
