We're seeing about the same thing in Northern New York - perfect weather for opening weekend of our Polar Express trains.  There is a threat of snow by Sunday, though.

OTOH, I coated the driveway a week or so ago, and before it was all set, we got a mere .05" of rain - enough to ruin a portion of it.  With this weather, I can open up the can of coating I had left and redo as much of it as possible before I head for the railroad tomorrow...

Seriously ?? What happened to the fall weather? Upper 60's to maybe 70 degrees? It's NOVEMBER not September. There, now that I've put up a good front for my wife who wants snow. I kind of like being in the tropics of Michigan. Lets me keep the corvette unwrapped a bit longer. Bob

Joe: FYI, One of your favorite pieces of railroad was given permission to be placed into mothballs today by STB. [Liberty Center to Napoleon on the old Wabash)

Hope ODOT understands that if they tear out the US 24 crossing, they are financially obliged to put it back if the line goes back into service .... If they are smart, they won't tic-off the Ohio PUC...

Murphy Siding

No non no.  You're thinking of that other Dakota, the North one.

I haven't seen this particular piece of public vandalism but I have seen popular works by a guy named Kilroy and by some dude who wants to Keep on Truckin'.

Kilroy has been with us he is probably in a wheelchair by now!

Recall that BaltACD furnished us with a 'Graffiti' job photo on, I think it was a enclosed hopper car, of a similarly 'quite detailed art'  picture of an early steam locomotive?

Joe - I agree.  I don't like to look at graffiti while watching trains, nor do I approve of the canvas.  But the work is stunning and hopefully this person will put it on canvas and sell it.

My interest was more if this was brand new or had been around awhile & was just now getting to our part of the country.  It was heading to the KC area.  We are a little behind the rest of the states when it comes to anything current.

All that talent and they have to paint railcars.Couldn't they paint for those who can't so nicely? Csx had to hold up q 166 due to a broken rail near Holgate.Track inspectors are busy finding new defects and putting out slow orders.Stopped at former teachers birthday party.Tomorrow is back to work.

Balt!  We saw this or one very much like it this morning!  I was watching the rest of the train and just happened to catch the painting when it was right in front of me.  It was beautifully done.  Hated all the rest of the graffiti around it.

Do we know anything more than it is well done?

But there are still land lines and dumb phones - and those the percieve 'smart phones' as dumb.

A surprising number of people no longer have a wired landline - they use only their cell phone.  I was considering dropping my landline some time back but didn't because the cell phone service at the house was horrible.  I can now see the tower from my back porch, but I've kept the landline (now cable based) because it's bundled in with my cable TV and 'Net.

Our pagers and sirens are activated via tones from the dispatch center.  It's they only service they will guarantee.  The tones go over the air from dedicated transmitters maintained by the county for that purpose.

They also provide faxes on dispatch and texts to phones, although they will only send the texts to the officers and to third party text relay outfits, which then send them out to whoever we designate.  But they constantly remind us that they won't guarantee the texts or faxes.  If any link in the chain goes down, no texts.

I'm also a member of our local RACES/ARES organization - amateur radio for emergencies.  Most of us have the ability to operate "off the grid" for at least some period of time.

I agree with Tree on the use of sirens; when I was on the fire dept. the only way we knew when we had a fire run was by Plectron Monitors, or the Fire Houses sirens.

Those sirens were used for Fire runs/Severe Weather/Hazmat and a few other things, so people were getting confused about what was what.

So, my Dept. and the local area started using "pagers"(at great expense to the depts.) to summon fire fighters for fire runs, and the house sirens were to be on used for Severe Weather and some Hazmat situations.[Just remember "smart, or "dumb" phones were still in the Future.]

Being Crazy, keeps you from going "INSANE" !! "The light at the end of the tunnel, has been turned off due to budget cuts" NOT AFRAID A Vet., and PROUD OF IT!!

I'll agree - but it is still an important notification device for many rural areas, and can count toward your ISO rating (which can affect insurance rates).   And it lets the local residents know there's something going on.  You'd be surprised how many have no idea of anything about their fire department...

Built-up areas with fire departments that run a lot of calls are usually first to scrap their siren, or at least restrict its use.  We run under 200 calls a year - 3-4 per week, not all of which call for the siren (we don't use the siren for EMS calls, f'rinstance).

A department that runs 2000 calls per year, on the other hand, is probably looking at 3-4 activations per day.  The neighbors start go get annoyed...

As for us, we'll get along without it until it's back.  Besides my pager, I get three different notifications on my phone, so it goes nuts for a few seconds.

Smart phones being what they are now, though, I have mine set to play the bugle call for fire when a dispatch hits...

In this day and electronic communication age fire sirens are somewhat anachronistic.

No trains - although I did hear the DS talking to one train, and about another.

Fire siren at the firehouse seems to have died.  Had a contractor take it off the roof and then I took it to the local outfit that deals with them.  Might have it back in a couple of weeks.  Until then, the neighbors might wonder why it's a little quieter than normal...

In this day and electronic communication age fire sirens are somewhat anachronistic. Ours went by the wayside perhaps thirty years ago but then, we have a fully paid fire department. One of the sirens near a busy intersection confused traffic so badly it was a hazard.

Since we live catty-corner from a very busy fire station, they closed the station once for a few days to do some building and the quiet was deafening!

But what do you do for a siren?  That seems kind of important to the area...

Not a lot of traffic today trackside - but good cup of coffee and later lunch, plus a nice day to be outside in November.  Saw just enough trains to keep us awake.  Lots of m-t car haulers headed to KC.  FerroMex, CN, Conrail and one old SP among them.  Eye candy!
