Last train from Lake Placid?

Helped with the move of passenger equipment out of Lake Placid yesterday.  A few freight cars will be moved out soon.

Normally, one of the passenger cars winters in LP, and the freight cars, used as an office and for storage, stay there too.  Not this year.

Depending on the decision of a judge, the tracks between Lake Placid and Tupper Lake may be gone.  Supposedly to build a trail.  I still feel it's so a short-sighted few can get everyone out of "their" woods.

It was a long, gloomy day.  On top of making most of the trip over 10 MPH track, there were numerous trees down on the tracks as a result of last Saturday's snow and Sunday's wind.  We averaged well under 10 MPH.

It was still a beautiful trip, scenery-wise.  Can't wait until we can take folks at least as far as Tupper Lake.

Got to see trains, boats and planes.  Also ducks, geese, mudhens, a kestrel, sunshine (70+) and...a drone!  (Sounds like a mosquito on steroids.)  2 tacos, coffee and a partridge in a pear tree.....

The tacos sound good, but I'll skip the coffee, and just take a pear from the tree...

It's not every day you get to see two tacos.  Must be the weather.

Aside from the usual morning activities, the jump start for the day was a possible structure fire.  Turned out what the passerby saw as smoke coming from a house was dust from a concrete grinding operation.  After a short time and much ado, we determined we weren't needed and headed back home.

Whilst on personal errands a little later, I got a call asking if I could go to one of our hospitals to supervise the installation of an antenna, so off I went, again...

Now it's time to go check out the community Halloween party at our banquet hall.

Wheeeee!

Started out well below freezing, ended up over +60F.

County highway people did some paving today, but not until after they put their rollers in our fire station to thaw out the system that puts water on the rollers themselves.

I spent the day helping the guys who were flushing the sewers.  I just kept them supplied with water...

I had a good trip back to South Carolina last month. To make the most of the fifteen day railpass, I went by way of Sacramento, San Jose, Los Angeles-San Antonio-St. Louis-Chicago, and Washington–and came back quickly through Washington and Chicago. The only difficulty came about when the Norfolk Southern decided to work on the track between Raleigh and Greensboro the day that I had planned to go to Charlotte on the Carolinian. Amtrak did send me an e-mail note, which I received while I was in Los Angeles, and I was able to make the necessary changes while there.

I left here in California (the name on the sleeper), and I slept in Nebraska from Chicago to Washington, and in Georgia on my way back to Chicago.

Since the track between Chicago and St. Louis is being worked on, I added 280 miles of track new to me between St Louis and Chicago (the former C&EI route) in addition to the 32 new miles between Ft. Worth and Dallas (only one possible stop at Tower 55 now–and we did not have to stop there). We did have to wait for a TRE train from Dallas before we were able to get away from Ft. Worth.

The best time that we made in arriving was coming into St. Louis two hours early–the schedule from Poplar Bluff is heavily padded. And we lost two hours in going on to Chicago on the single track former C&EI route.

The meals in the diners had changed little since my last trip, in this past spring.

I was pleased to see three cars from the original California Zephyr (Silver Solarium, Silver Rapids, and Silver Lariat) on the rear of the train as I rode to my car in Chicago. I expected them to be taken off in Denver, but they were still there when I arrived in Salt Lake City.

I’m sorry, Mookie; I slept right through Lincoln this time.

If Johnny went the C&EI route, then most likely he went the old Big 4/ NYC route from E StL /Lenox Tower to Pana that CR sold to UP.

Mudchicken Nothing is worth taking the risk of losing a life over. Come home tonight in the same condition that you left home this morning in. Safety begins with ME.... cinscocom-west

You got it, MC! Uncle Pete delayed us here and there with his freights that were going down state.

I was prepared for a possible detour with maps of both routes that I copied from the SPV atlas.

The hardest part was determining just how we got out of St. Louis, using a TRRA ETT. We used the MacArthur Bridge, and could barely see the Arch for the morning fog. I also used my NYC Illinois Division ETT of 1959, and the UP information found in the Chicago Railfan Timetable (1992).

I am watching the Cubs scalp the Indians.

I'm a Tigers fan, so I really don't have a dog in the fight, if you will.

That said, I usually root for the AL team (well, maybe not for the Yankees...)

So I'm still pulling for the Indians...

Saw UP 1201 yesterday, a GP39-2 which was built with a raised cab for Kennecott Copper. The lowered cab and fuel tank are quite distinct.
