Do boats climb any hills and run one speed.

I live in the middle part of the country so if they put them on boats and have success with them. I wi***hem the best, but I don't care about boats, I want to see them big motors on trains, not boats. But there is a differant way that we can look at this. The boats bring in the product, but it takes the power of the train to get it to the final destination, and I will agree with the other guy. They don't go up hills and go one speed.

Just like steam turbines.Worked good in ships they went one speed in open ocean and no hills also.Remember Fairbanks locomotives didnt they have PT boats motors.They falled didnt they.

If those 265H engines are going into tugs it won't be a diesel electric set up,tugs are direct drive. But they may be for some of the newer,high speed ferries which do use electric propulsion. CAT is doing good business with their almost 10,000HP 3618 engine for this application.
When hopes for the 6,000 horse units were still high both EMD and GE were talking about 7,500 and 8,000 HP in future engines. At least I've been lucky enough to catch CSX AC60ACs on the Boston line.
BTW,Fairbanks Morse diesels still serve quite succesfully as APUs on the United States Navy's Nuclear sub fleet.

glad you got your own place. I meant get home from either place and go back to work again the same day. As far as the 70's, it's just normal variation in their flow. They are still primarily assigned to intermodal trains, auto racks and some manifest. Just a note about those 8500's (EMD 6000hp) they are definately being assigned to intermodals again. 2 of 'em by themselves the other day on a ig2lb about 7000 feet long.

In this case the 6000HP boat application will be electric. The secondary purpose of these monsters is to provide power to oil rigs when necessary.

D, Was you on that IG2LB, or did you just see it? Just let me know when you are home and I'll try to make it up there. Is the traffic increasing? It sure does seem like it recently. Went down to Wichita yesterday and saw the K&O headquaters. They have some really old engines down there. Saw 2 GP30's, a SD45-in good condition- and even saw an old CF7 still in Santa Fe colors. That was a good find. Well I'll talk to ya later.
