anyone else had a problem getting signed on here after having a profile for years
Posted by Sunnyland on Monday, March 28, 2016 4:57 PM

My name did not come up and Welcome Back and I tried to sign in a number of times with my old name. It kept asking for e-mail and when I gave old password,it was rejected.   I finally signed up for a new account with same e-mail and changed password and now I'm connected again with my same name Sunnyland. Not sure what happened, but Trains must have done something to Forum access and wondered if anyone else had the same problems. I had never logged out, so not sure what was going on.  Thanks.

Kalmbach's Steve Otte had posted a warning about two systems changes on the Model Railroader portion of the Forums and you might find the discussion there to be useful.

I have never seen an organization like Kambach - different forum subject areas - running different forum software, each with it's own quirks for users to find and figure out how to defeat.

Never too old to have a happy childhood!

I still sign in like I have since I joined some years ago. Not a big deal, at least for me.

I do wonder about the different experiences of people on the same web site. Must have to do with our different software, servers, etc.

For once, I have had none of the problems complained of by people above. That's one in a row.

We're on Windows 10 now, courtesy of an impulsive wife, who apparently thought she could not resist their constant blandishments, and clicked. Cost us only a visit from Geek Squad and ongoing headaches.

Windows 10 still sucks, but (thank goodness) no more on the Trains site than anywhere else.

I have a landline, a cell phone I never turn on and we are as sophistocated as a worn pair of flipflops.  Running windows 8, I think - I never know.  Was signed off, signed on and never looked back.  And I don't usually have any trouble with the forums, other than some of the personalities.

This all occurred at about the time I was updating a number of passwords to stronger strings, so apparently by doing that, then logging off and logging back in to check that the new password did in fact take, there didn't seem to be any problems with the site.  Dumb luck, as they say.

MacOS 10.9.5, Safari 9.1 (9537.86.5.17.4), at least on this machine.

EDIT: Just opened this thread in Internet Explorer, Windows 7 (9.0.24237.1028877) in my Parallels space and logged in fine as well.

I had some trouble last week getting access to Subscriber Only Content, but that seemed to have been resolved about a day after initial problems. Did have to use the login from the Subscriber Only Content alert to get through, which didn't work the day before.

Running Firefox 45.0.1 on a MacBook running OS X 10.8.5 (waiting for the update to the Trains DVD before going for the latest and greatest OS X version).

I had problems with Yahoo and message return, Google, and Firefox.   But now all these problems have vanished, and everything seems to go smoothly, so I think the problems have been fixed, and I hope they are fixed for you.

I just tried again....

I can't use the "Mailing Address" because my address doesn't include any of the allowable "State/Province" options because I don't live in the USA or Canada. I can't even leave it blank....

I've asked for help from Customer Service but haven't seen any response yet.

How stupid do you have to be to not allow foreign addresses in your logon when you know you offer foreign subscriptions at a substantially higher price?

I do not understand your problelm.  I cannot post unless I am logged in.  You have been able to post.  You should also then be able to visit any part of the website you wish.

I am foratunate that with both Google and Firefox, my login is automatic, or sometimes semi-automatic.

My mailing address is also outside North America.   Is it because I am a magazine subscriber and you are not?

Dave,

Did you have to separately log in to see the News Wire?

If so did you use your address?

Did it accept Jerusalem (or Tel Aviv or wherever) in the "State/Province" box?

I don't know my account number and the system won't accept any mailing address without a USA or Canada State or Province.

Before the change, my subscription was recognised automatically but not now.

We may be getting at the root of the problem.  I moved to Jerusalem and was a subscrober BEFORE the website was originally set up.  In July, I will have been living in Jerusalem for 20 years, moving here when I was 64-1/2, anticipating living off of Social Security at 65, with savings covering the half year until then.

So, my Jerusalem address was already in the Kalmbach data base before the website was set up!   And I have never had to go through the routine you are describing.

I did have to insert by special subscriber number designation, which is on the mailing envelope, when I logged in for the first time.   (They may have asked for eithr that number OR the mailing address, and possibly I faced the problem you are facing then, and used the mailing code number instead.  My memory is not that good to know for certain.)

Instead of working throught this website, why not just email to:

info@trainsmagazine.com.    cc:webmaster@trainsmagazine.com

and describe your problem in detail. I think you will get results.

You can quote my analysis and experience if you think it will be helpful.

Dave,

Thanks.

My mind hasn't gone altogether then. At least I remembered you were in Jerusalem....

I have already asked for the number.

My copy arrives in a plastic bag with a printed label sheet about a month after the copy appears in the USA, the last one just before this problem arose...

Foolishly I'm still working as I turn 68 this year. I meant to finish before I turned 63, as my father did but I'm walking distance from the office, the walk is through a forest reserve, so I can scare the occasional kangaroo, the money is good and I've had a full pension paid to me since age 55 (locally this is called double dipping) and the work is interesting.

Suddenly, within the last week, when I try to log in as usual, I get a formal screen, which asks me to give my email address in full; needs to be typed in, then my password.  When I hit the enter button, I then get the original first page which asks me to log in as usual.  When I hit that, I get referred again to the "formal" screen and have to type in my email address, then my password.  After 3 times in a row of this stuff, I simply quit trying to log in.  This morning I went through this same gobbledegook twice before being allowed in.  ??????

You know, that might help. Back when I was painting windows, I would find myself holding my mouth right as I trimmed around the glass--seldom did I have to wipe paint off the glass.

Nope! I still had to go through this same rigamarole once before the proper login sequence let me in. No big dea; I spend too much time on this site anyway. Junior Yardmaster

OK   Here is another suggestion.  When you log in, take some time, say thirty sedonds, half-a-minute, between each step.

Nah - you can never spend too much time with trains.... (at least not if you're a fan)

Another matter, Junior Yardmaster.   Your computer may be slower and slower in retreaving your password and email address.  Does your computer Defrag regularly?  I do it manually whenever things seem to slow down, but some have it done on a regular schedule.  What that schedule should be might depend on the size of the hard-drive memory and the type of system.  I have the old standby Windows XP, and yours is probably a newer system.

Finally, there may have been some change in your server that was not explained. Sometimes servers add features that I don't find useful but that add to the occupation of the working memory and thus slow things down.  Then when they get enough complaints they install a fix.

I have no problems logging on.

However, not having my subscriber number means I can't read the news wire.

Two separate requests using different methods to Kalmbach haven't got me my subscriber number yet, and occasional checks back to see if overseas subscribers can use the "Mailing Address" option have shown that it is available to USA and Canada users only (still)!

I'm baa-ack!   For the past week I've been reading the comments on problems signing in, and I couldn't even call up the sign-in box.   It started when MS loaded 18 updates to my system (W-7), and when I brought it back up, not only could I not sign in, but when reading the forum it was a mix of little letters and giant letters.   Then I saw that others were reporting problems, but not the same as mine, so I didn't know whose changes caused my problem.   After mulling it over and trying a few things, I happened to remember that a few years ago I had problems and had to switch to compatibility mode.   Thinking that the changes made might have cleared the compatibility mode, I checked it and found that it was still in compatibility mode.   On a whim I cleared it, and everything worked fine.   I don't know if this helps anybody else, but....

Paul, everyone. I had the same problem, but found that if I checked "Stay Signed In" the site would let me log in. Otherwise not. I email Kalmbach about the problem but never got a reply.

Wondering if this might be all the result of a "cookie" issue? As in the site is requiring that a new cookie be set in order to log in? And the "keep me signed in" function is required to set the new cookie?

I wonder this because I tend to access this place through two seperate machines. One accepts and keeps cookies, the other accepts cookies but deletes them every time the machine is rebooted. I had to check the "keep me logged in" box on both machines in order to log in the first time this problem became evident.   Ever since the machine that accepts and keeps cookies logs in with zero problem, but the machine that wipes the cookie cache clean every new session, I have to keep checking the "keep me logged in" checkbox everytime I try to log in.

Perhaps the site people are now using cookies to confirm user identities? Just a thought.
