We got about four inches of the white stuff over the last 24 hours. Now, the bottom is going to drop out of the temperature for a few days.

Are you sure that it was a bee and not a son of a bee? Whistling  Anyhow, we're in a for a pretty good cold snap for the next few days with some light snow.  Getting out on Monday is starting to look questionable.

Yup, honest to goodness American honey bee...a neighbor bought my father's four "Supers" when Dad moved and sold the place to me.

We used to give away quarts of honey every Christmas...the neighbors never complained about the bees at all!

I couldn't help it.  Word play and good punmanship is a family trait and my and my four brother's (plus one sister) spouses have been tolerating (?) it for years.

Was just encroaching in Ed's backyard with a herd of fellow orange and yellow clad looky-loos invading the place. Still stunned at 10% humidity down there in da swamp and not sure how we managed to miss each other. His place is a beehive with all those red & yellow (and occasional Cowboy blue) critters.

Well, a son of a bee would be a drone. I'm sure Ed would have known it for what it was.

I enjoyed watching, from a distance, as Katie worked with her bees. She did get some nice tasting honey last fall.

One of our volunteers on the railroad runs a green house and sells "u-pick" blueberries.  In order to increase the yield of the blueberry bushes, he hired some bees one year and was able to sell the honey.  It went like hotcakes (pun intended) and the next year, he hired two hives worth of bees.

The sun is shining brightly, which belies the bitter cold outside.

A friend of the family, as I was growing up, put a beehive in our back yard, to help with pollination of some of the herbs and fruit trees we had back then.  He handled the bees, and our "rent" was paid in the form of honey.  On two occasions that I remember the bees swarmed--our friend handled those, too, and we wound up with three hives.  Nobody in the neighborhood complained.

Metra service on UP West was back to normal for this morning's Fleet.  I was out earlier this afternoon and saw one scoot (westbound, and on time).  Since we are west of the bungalow that burned, that's a good sign.

My first experiences in being close tp beehives came when I was walking down a lane at best friend's home (on a farm). Hi father had several hives, and I already knew that you do not disturb honeybees (or any other kind of bee) in their homes or at work.

The lake effect machine is in high gear, and right over us.  It's supposed to swing south a little later.  I'm holding off on the snowblower for a little while, anyhow.

For Randy - from just north of me:

Ordered the stuff I need to do digital comms on ham radio this afternoon.  The heart is a little computer that only costs $35.  The tablet sized touch screen I ordered to go with it was more expensive.  It'll be cool when I get it all figured out...

Cleared off the snowboard (official snow measurement point) at 6 PM (1" since noon).  Now, at 20 after 7PM, there's already 2.5" on it.  Will measure again closer to midnight for an official reading.

Cleared the driveway, too, and evidence of that is rapidly disappearing...

I had an interesting day. It took a couple days to get into the dentist with a bad toothache as my dentist is out of town.  My expensive crown on top of my expensive root canal fianally gave up the ghost and needed to check out.  Mr. Dentist said it was too risky for him and I would have to go to an oral surgeon and be put under.  We have two in our city.  The first one said mid March was the soonest.  The second one said because the circumstances, I could show up at 1:00 PM and get in line, or schedule for mid March, by which time I would have been long dead from a toothache.

My wife is out of town, so our oldest son rearranged his work schedule to be my babysitter/chauffeur.  I've been home six hours and the right side of my face is swollen but starting to get feeling back.  Suddenly I'm taking interest in rereading all the information they sent home with me-especially the medicines and painkillers.  I think I'm going to lay low this weekend. (Or simply just float around the room.)

Since wife is out of town, I will play Grandma and hold your hand - virtually.  Never had root canal, but I think every molar in my mouth has inlay or crown.  I will commiserate with you.  It hurts in the chair and then again in the billfold, doesn't it.  Floating sounds like fun - you will have to teach us that one.....

Twelve below at dawn this morning, with an indicated wind chill of -32F.  No snow overnight, though, and the sun is shining bright!

Oh, sure.  But with the wind chill factor it probably only fet like 79!  And here I'm happy that the temperature is 8 above and not 8 below.

Norris, the pain should be gone soon.  But the worst thing is when the Novocain starts to wear off and you get that itchy feeling inside that you can't do anything about.

I walked about two miles in the barely-double-digit temperatures today, with no trains going by while I was near the tracks.  Yesterday, though, I took the wife to lunch, then the scoot to Elmhurst, and had plenty of trains to make notes about (I was trying to get a letter written, and was mostly successful).

I have to get to northwestern Indiana soon.  It appears that the Gary Railway has obtained 110 brand-new coil steel cars (gray, with tall gray hoods).  Unless I'm mistaken, this is the first freight equipment they've ever had that wasn't ex-EJ&E.

So did I, but you have to put a minus in front of them.

Right now it's -13.2F, having never gotten above zero all day.

Hope it warms up overnight.  Gonna be a cold balloon launch in the morning otherwise.  They'll have a chase on their hands, too, as the predicted path for their weather balloon takes it clear to Albany.  It's a group from the nearby military base, along with a ham or two.

Up for a vehicle that hit a tree (fire call).  No injuries, but BRRRRRRR!  Pretty bad when I'm standing in my garage after arriving back home and note how warm it feels all the while noting that the thermometer reads all of +5F.

My truck indicated -32F on the way back from the scene...
