Here's how I do it.

I read through a thread that has a title that I may be interested in.  Or maybe there's one of the regulars posting to it.  If I find something to comment on, I do so if I feel like it.  Half the time I forget what the thread title is, and even if I do scroll up to look at it, I still post what I was going to.

I don't get the whole on-topic/off-topic nonsense.   Just post something that others may find useful.  If a thread drifts - so be it.  That's the nature of the beast called discussion.

I read this post and found it to be interesting and informative.

As a result, I felt that I should post my findings to you all.

Mostly, we've been talking about posting, so on a thread about posting, are we really off-topic?

Paul North discussed it in another thread. :

Paul_D_North_Jr

Actually, it was 152 PS = Pennsylvania System; also used 155 PS to a greater extent. See the bottom of this rail chart:

http://www.txholdings.com/rail_chart.php

Not in any major main lines; almost all are now either 115 RE,132 RE, 136 RE, 140 RE, or 141 RE (AREMA).  Undoubtedly there's some in yards, old branch lines (coal lines around Shamokin, PA), a few industries where I put it in . . . Whistling - for various specific technical reasons.  It's kind of an orphan - almost all of the "Other Track Material" (joint bars obviously, but also tie plates, and everything in the turnouts) fit only it.

Walking in track laid with the stuff was weird - it was so tall, it felt like there were handrails on either side, or else it was proportioned more like narrow gauge, with respect to the rail height vs. the gauge distance.

- Paul North.

For the rest of you & Zug: can someone please explain cab signals to me?

The PRR can do a better job than I:

Film's a little dated, but concept is pretty much the same.

OK, a railroad-related question:  In the opening scene with the title, the rails in that picture looked HUGE.   Could anyone venture a guess as to their weight?   I know PRR used some very heavy rails.

Anybody know how ot change your "signiture?" I'm getting a little tired of "Now with quotes Wow and smilies Cool" And my Active project now is the Beaverton,Fanno Creek and Bull Mtn.

On topic, I know that when the CP F units came through to Portland, they had to have a UP unit leading because of some issue wiht cab controls. A lot of irritated railfans for that one.

That said, never be afraid to ask a question.

And we'll be glad to provide an answer.  Even if we have to make it up.

So how about a thread by Nonrails discussing whatever amongst ourselves. Then perhaps the "rails" will get so tired of amatures flopping about looking for answers they'll weigh in and help out.

Again, "Nora's Stupid Question Thread" did just that.  I believe she's working for a railroad now.  It was a pretty free-swinging thread and a lot of folks learned a lot.

Wish I could find it.  I'm sure it's out there somewhere.

Sometimes the problem is that there's no easy/simple answer.  Even a brief summary of some topics will make your head spin, as we've all seen one way or another here.

That said, never be afraid to ask a question.  Even if someone points out that it was discussed in another thread, at least you'll get your answer.

Cab signals are only used for territory that is equipped for it.  So engines with cab signals are fine to run on non-equipped lines.  But there's a whole set of rules for non-equipped engines to lead on lines that do feature cab signals.

UP uses cab signals on some of its lines.   You'll have to ask someone else for specifics.

Zug - what is the reason for cab signals on the eastern and not the BNSF here in the middle of the country?  Congestion?  Traffic?

And when those CSX engines come thru here, some as 2nd motor power and at least one was HEP - where do the cab signals figure in - do they not come on since we aren't set up for that?

My observation has been that the people in the know are fairly quick in answering questions so that misunderstandings are quickly cleared up--as the idea that our Elder Stateslady works for Kalmbach was corrected by the ultimate authority on the matter..

But a lot of us non-railroad people would like to be able to get into a discussion w/o drowning in the technicals. And not everyone is brave enough to ask.

So how about a thread by Nonrails discussing whatever amongst ourselves. Then perhaps the "rails" will get so tired of amatures flopping about looking for answers they'll weigh in and help out.  Once we have their attention, we can ask lot's of questions, like why any sane person would work for a railroad.  That's a start.  Hey, i'm new here, maybe it's been done before, I don't know.  I'm still in the rubbing every body the wrong way phase hereabouts. ;)

Thanks, Zug. It is a little dated--I saw a Shark. I wonder--did the cab signals also show the aspect that told the engineer to lower his pantograph?

Not that I ever saw.   The PRR style (as far as I know) only gave four aspects:

clear, approach medium, approach, restricting.

Not all cab signals we have use speed enforcement.  They just need acknowledged.  on other lines - there is speed enforcement.

It's been fun.  But it isn't much fun anymore.   Signing off for now.

Alright, so before this post peters out,Ihopefully it won't) let me just say that this is the most fun i have had in months. I personally like my nonsensical "post about posting" and, if the moderators are willing ,i ask that it be extended a bit longer.

Alright, so before this post peters out, (hopefully it won't) let me just say that this is the most fun I have had in months. I personally like my nonsensical "post about posting" and, if the moderators are willing ,i ask that it be extended a bit longer.

Whether or not it is taken down, I would like to use this "forum rules" topic to ask: If a post is locked/ poster banned, are ALL participants banned, or only the people who initiated it?

P.S. If a moderator, for some reason reads this, let me know if you will allow it to commence.

Why do we need yet another social or non-topical thread, given we already have the Chatterbox spring thread and The Official Eleanor Roosevelt (And Anything Else Non-topical) Thread?

We don't, you are probably right. I suspected, though, that I'm neither old enough or midwestern enough for Chatterbox, so this thread seemed like something interesting to jump onto. Considering the price of admission, I guess i'll ride this pony to the end. ;)
