Good thing I'm retired--I'd probably wave when I came in and bow when I left.

I have a blue one and a green one, both with the polka-dots.  Trouble is, they are still packed away.

In the past I've had, well still have somewhere, one that is black with yellow polka-dots.  One guy asked if I was an Iowa Hawkeye fan, their colors are black and gold.  A van driver said she was going to put smiley faces on all the yellow dots.

The pedestrian crossing over UP's main line in Lombard was shut down yesterday morning, and the tunnel, under construction for over a year but still some distance from completion, was opened so there's a path across the tracks.

We had occasion to check it out 15 minutes after the closure of the crossing (the planking and signals were already gone):

While you may be happy to get the tunnel in Lombard, the Baltimore community of Lansdowne several years ago mounted successful efforts to have one that served their community closed - is was said to be the site of numerous assults and other crimes considering it's confined nature.  Hope you have better results.

As I ate breakfast this morning I enjoyed watching the wildlife--primarily quail and squirrel--in the backyard getting their breakfasts. There were at least four quail and five squirrels that were really noticeable. The adult squirrels were somewhat possessive of what they had found, and chased the juveniles that came too close away. At least one of the juveniles came up to the door and wanted to come in, obviously having its first encounter with glass. I had never  before noticed that whereas adult squirrels carry their tails behind themselves, the juveniles curve their tails over their backs (they look strange).

A few days ago, I learned how it is that squirrels are able to descend a tree headfirst--they are able to turn their ankles around so that the claws are able to dig in and thus hold them from falling headmost.

Balt, I hope so, too.  Odds are that there will be seurity cameras installed in there, if they aren't already.  There have been some strange goings-on on the platform already, so somebody somewhere is presumably watching a bank of cameras.

Maybe I should have one pointed at me while I'm riding my bike...

Johnny - Amtrak has had a little trouble being on time lately.  So you might want to look for me in Bedroom #1 - upstairs.  Shy

I used to watch the squirrels while walking to work years ago.  The young ones used to run about 3 feet up the trunk of a tree and then fall off backward onto the ground.  I thought they were crazy until I am almost sure I heard one giggle! Maybe a form of squirrel gymnastics.

We are a little short of quail here in town.  Bring some along and just leave @ the depot.  We will take it from there.

If I had a camera in the truck today, they would have hauled me in for some more shifting practice, until they looked at the clutch in this loaner truck.........

My regular truck has been in the shop since last Friday, finally found a loaner truck Tuesday, and even though it needs a clutch adjustment and a clutch brake, I've been using it. Hopefully, my truck will be waiting for me when I get to the yard Friday.........

I have not checked to see where the delays are--but I will be going across Wyoming Monday, so we should get out of the mile-high city on time. If the delays are caused by cornhusks on the track, we may run late, though. Last year, the UP was working on the track around the Big Ten, and delayed #5 in its leaving Denver.

I'll give you advance notice before I come back home.

You want quail? For food?--NO! Anyway, I would have to find the nest so I could bring the whole family--and I do not know how many chicks there are in any of the families; I do not want any broken-hearted quail here.

Mooks: I'll get the firehose out Monday when somebody slides thru Denver.

Dealing with those twisty thingies and golfball sized hailballs tonight, especially north of Denver. I'm mad at Ma Nature for pickin' on a town named after a railroad surveyor (Berthoud). Flooding adding insult to injury. BNSF/UP/GWR are scrambling right now. Highway department is out with snowplows.

Put about 500 miles on da Poodle Truck today, starting at 4AM. Observations:

(1) Circus is in Colorado Springs w/ Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Red Train.

(2) Somebody's Minnesota Zephyr Units are safely in Alamosa along with several other E and F-Units of all descriptions. Ellis has quite a menagerie there including a faded red & white Carolina Southern F7A I wasn't aware of.

(3) I know where all the ex-Amtrak high speed reefers are.

(4) Seeing GE techno-toasters in plain blue wrappers in some odd places in branchline service on lightweight rail. (there's a roadmaster out there scared to death of what those overweight, poor curving, limited coupler throw beasts are gonna do to his lightweight 85# and smaller jointed rail.)

(5) Branchline train shoving backwards for miles with an F7A. (thought I wouldn't ever see that again - anachronism?)

(6) Been made aware of one of the most blatantly hokey PTC scams being foisted on the locals by a telecom that I've ever heard of. Protecting 10 mph embargoed track that doesn't see a passenger train with cell towers every 6 miles?

Interesting day.

Jeff & PDN - Can I wave at the train camera with my black hardhat with Mickey Mouse ears glued on?

Johnny - as long as they will eat birdseed or peanuts in the shell, they will be fine.  Seems like everything here eats the peanuts, while the squirrels (and one lone robin) go for the bird seed.  Guess I could put out some breakfast cereal and milk if they are picky.  Will take any you can bring.  Ours are all way out in the country and we never get to see them!

Heads up Mud...we are soaking in rain right now.  Lincoln pretty high and dry (that's funny since we sit in a bowl) but all around us and along old hwy 6, they won't have to water the crops for awhile.  Probably won't be so funny when all that rain water gushes thru here to the Mighty Mo.

Mookie,

I'll bet Lincoln has lots of quail, but they are of the San Quentin variety and off limits for hunting. Wink Devil

Having UNL here provides a lot of lovely ladies of all ages, but they still aren't as interesting as Johnny's Quail.  And Johnny's quail are always appropriately dressed....

Yes, they are interesting to watch. When several pair are feeding in the yard, one will fly up to stand watch on the fence the neighbor behind us has; the males do take turn as watchbird.

I understand that quail mate for life. I have never noticed any animosity between those who feed in the yard.

This morning, when I came back from a walk and came out of the garage, I startled several who were getting their breakfast. They had no idea that I was wanting my breakfast--inside--and had no desire to eat them. They did not fly but ran well away from the garage.

Johnny, we have 2 or 3 familys of Quail in our back acre . They are not all there at the same time. The king rooster of each group stays in a tall bush at the top to watch  and if another group comes  he will run them off before they are done eating. the roosters do squabble from time to time. When the chicks are feeding , if something isn't right daddy will chirp one time  and the chicks will run to the tall grass and he hits the ground a runnin' to herd them.  Family ties are strong. ~~~ No trains were hurt by  a king rooster protecting his  family.

Cannonball, your tribe must be different from the one here; I have seen as many as a dozen or more adult quail in the back yard at one time, eating peaceably, with no squabbling.

CB/Johnny - I am struggling trying to remember:  Don't waterfowl - ducks/geese have males that will watch while female and brood eat and rest?

Isn't that special!  Humans could learn a lot from animals.

Long day at the fire training center.  I was running our pumper in support of what the students were doing.  Even though I didn't actually "fight" any fires, with the wind being the funny thing it is, I still smelled like smoke.  They burned some cars, then played with extinguishers, then went inside the burn building with live fires burning several times.

Today, it's off to the railroad...

Morning Everyone:

Its a beautiful day here in Alamo City.  Sunny and warm with expected highs to reach 91.  Cowboy

We have had a reprieve from the rain for the past week or so...no rain in the forecast until at least next weekend.

Many communities are now engaged in drying out and assessing flood damage.

We are fine where we live...good drainage in our area.

Hope you all enjoy your Sunday.  We'll be grilling later, so if you're in the neighborhood...  Cool
