Usually people are asking us to send water to them - now it's us that can use the water.  Lake Ontario and the St Lawrence River are both well below seasonal expectation - maybe even a foot.  This will have a serious effect on boating, as marinas can't dock some boats.

We've got showers and thunderbumpers as a possibility all week.  The last 24 hours have yielded about .17" of the wet stuff.  More would be welcome.

At least we're not into serious vacation time.  Our kids are still in school, so family camping trips won't kick in for another few weeks.

Got a good shower overnight - that might help wash the "weed and feed" I spread last week into the ground.

Places to do, things to go...

Ed,

On an aviation forum I made the comment that unless the folks living on Lake Conroe are living in Lake Conroe they don't have too much rain. Perhaps I should retract that. I've seen the news, and it doesn't look good down there. Embarrassed

Well, they say Lake Ontario is around a foot low.  That's 1,328,025,000 acre-feet,  432,738,274,275,000 gallons, or 3,202,263,229,635,000 cubic feet, more or less.  The St Lawrence River flows at 347, 849 cubic feet of water per second on average.

Just putting a foot of rain in the area of the lake would be too much, there'd be runnoff to deal with, too.  Eight inches of rain would probably fix the problem, as long as we didn't get too much flooding inland...

And on a competely different note, for the first time I can recall in the 30+ years I've lived in this house, I'm not plagued by ants.

Might be because I've pretty much eradicated the peonies around the house, or because I blocked off that bee's nest in my wall I discovered a couple of years ago (who knows how long it had been there - I only recently found it).  And it could be the cold spring.

Anyhow, I'm not complaining.

News cast just stated 5 1/2" of rain average over Harris county alone, which they worked out to equal 162 billion gallons of water fell, just in this county alone.

Told ya we had leftovers, Larry....

Big cracks filled up fast, then the really big crack that the ships use had a tide come in....no where for the bayous to empty into.

Flood stage on the bayous hit in 30 minutes...out of banks and into the homes of people dumb enough to live close to them.

Sounds like you got the worst of it, Ed!  I'm glad we were out of Texas by that time yesterday (and nowhere near Houston--though that's one city I'd still like to visit in better times).

I wish those billions of gallons could somehow be shipped to California, too.  I guess they go through trillions for agricultural purposes alone.

We got 0.4 inches of rain yesterday, and probably another inch today, with more coming tomorrow, possibly.  I need it to dry off so's I can attack my poor shaggy lawn (though I have never seen it this green-looking!).

Pat and I did some errand-running today, and I got to see a good variety of stuff on my hometown railroad.  We also caught an empty crude-tank train on the CP, going over the new bridge at Bensenville. It's been mentioned here a few times.  Irving Park Road, under the new CP bridge, has been reopened, but the clearance is still only 14'6".  I think they'll dig it out a little more when they can lower the street to the west where the railroad crossing used to be.

Contacted my brother yesterday, he mentioned that they're on relatively high ground above White Oak Bayou and had mostly street flooding, which had already subsided.  Their biggest problem was getting around the abandoned cars and the various trash containers (including a dumpster) that managed to float into the streets.

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

Where around White Oak bayou?

The people who had trash pick up tuesday morning didn't have to worry about bringing their cans back in....all the cans ended up in the bayou, or spread several streets over!

No rain.  But nice breeze.  Listened to the LFR put out a duplex fire - small child got hold of a candle and did some redecorating.  Well, motels can be nice for awhile.  Fortunately, our duplex has all adults.  And hopefully flashlights.

Looking like a nice day today, although there is a threat of thunderbumpers.   We can use them, and except for some vacationers, the rain will be welcomed with open arms.

Very pleasant experience yesterday - we officially welcomed the newest member of the family.  Lila was born in February, but came home from the hospital with her adoptive family (daughter and son-in-law).  Yesterday, the judge's signature made it official - she's part of the family.

In what I now suspect was a brilliant ploy to keep the grandson/new brother (6) out of the way (but in a good way!), the judge let him sit at the bench while the paperwork was being finished.  She also posed for pictures with the "new" family.

Given some of the stuff they have to deal with in Family Court, I have no doubt that events like adoptions are a bright spot in their calendars.  She certainly made the most of it.

Larry (tree68)

Congratulations ! to you and your family....Sounds like a wonderful way to start of the rest of your lives.... That young 'un will keep you all young. Bow

Weather here in the"middle' has gotten Cold for May ! Low 50's this morning ! BUt no rain is in the forcast-for now- Seems to be moving East and Northeast.

WE finally have stared moving into the new place...Will be lots of work, About non yesterday, watched a Southbound Stacker, and last night what appeared to be a 'sand train' heading west or south at supper time.  It is amazing to sit on the deck, and hear the 'sounds',;as the air reductions and applications make their way through the train. Things that are not so apparent whe a train is rolling by at speed. Trying to teach the grand kids that there is no one in the DPU's to wave back at them !Huh?

Thanks, Sam!

It was a soggy day at the training center, but much was learned (I was just there to operate our pumper, but practice with that is never a bad thing).  Now I've got to get ready for a trip south with as many barrels as I can fit on the trailer I borrowed.

We will be using the barrels to anchor signposts for the Thomas event at the end of June.  I thought I was getting something in the 35 gallon range - these are 55 gallon versions.   I'll be using some creative securement to get as many on the trailer as possible.  Still, I'm thinking two trips will be necessary...

Spent most of Monday on the road, hauling empty plastic barrels to Utica for use as signpost bases.  And attending two meetings to boot.

The creeks and rivers here are rolling, with most the color of chocolate milk.  I would suspect we got about an inch of rain in total, although some areas may have gotten more.  We definitely needed the moisture, although it will have little effect on Lake Ontario or the St Lawrence River.

Lots of "routine" chores to do around the house today.  It's a little misty yet, so I won't be spending a lot of time outside...

The two unpatched remaining CNW engines are in Council Bluffs/Omaha for the joint UPHS/CNWHS annual meet.  I had the pleasure of hauling them dead in consist to CB.

I also had an inward facing camera.  It made us so much safer today.

Mischief Any rules (yet) against wearing one of those Groucho Marx black-framed glasses, nose, and mustache things (see http://www.amazon.com/Disguise-Costumes-glgro-Groucho-Glasses/dp/B002ZHQJ06 ), or a clown face mask ?  Or a hockey goalie mask ?  OK, I'll quit now . . .
