Second snow fall of the season here in the Lead Belt of Missouri.  It was made up of large wet flakes.  We received just enough to turn things white.  The pavement is warm enough to melt most that fell on it.  With temperatures falling in to the upper twenties tonight, I expect the roads to get icy.

When my father and several others formed the Reserve Police in the old home town, their first "uniform" was peacoats.

So far we've carried around 2000 happy travellers to the North Pole and back, with another 1000 on tap for tonight.  Had some problems with slippery rail the first night - there was still snow on them.  After that was gone things got much better, locomotive-wise.  And while a 12 car train may not sound like much in this world of 100+ car freight trains, for us, it's a big deal.

Next weekend will be our major challenge - sold out trains to Old Forge on Friday and Saturday, PLUS the Polar Express.  I'm running for the Polar trips on Friday, then I get to take the train up to Thendara on Saturday.

CSX has been keeping the rails warm on their Chicago Line (which runs through Buffalo) - last night it sounded as though trails were running on each other's markers, if you will.  Between two CPs and a nearby defect detector, it wasn't very long between calls on the radio.

Our worry over the next few days in the lake effect areas will be warm temps and more rain - which will make that snow all the heavier.  Buffalo has already had problems with collapsing roofs.  Plus, the runoff from the melting snow and rain will likely cause some flooding problems.  Man the pumps!

Eating pea soup? Though I wore mine (hand-me-down from my Radarman on a mine sweep brother) when working on the Ground Crew in college--especially when going around late at night checking the furnaces on the campus, making sure the stokers were full and the two boilers that did not have automatic water replenishment had enough water in them, and on Sunday mornings doing the same and cleaning the fires (that was the hardest part).

I'm not sure; it may depend on how peas are in the soup. I am sure that a pea jacket would be comfortable if you had to be out in a fog that is as thick as pea soup.

How long, how long, until we get a spel czech? But, even then, proofing would still be necessary to ensure that the right word is used.

Just exactly how thick is pea soup?  The fog was so thick this morning, that visibility was under 1/10 th of a mile.  Rising temps a a little of the big yellow orb might even knock down a bit of the ol' white stuff.  Spring is just around the corner....

Was at Lowe's earlier.  Toro now has 3-stage snowblowers.  Looks like the rotaries the RRs out west have.   Be neat to have, but we don't get enough deep snow for the $1000+ pricetag.

and I figure that "my figure" can alwasy use the exercise.

I saw a film clip on tv of a lady, well into maturity, using a pretty good sized snowblower.  I was fascinated because we had one about that size and the Driver (who is no weakling) said if he didn't hang on tight, it would have given him a ride thru town to work.  She was really mauling that snow!  My knit cap is off to those ladies who do mowing and snow blowing.  A stapler is more to my liking!

Tree:  how heavy is the snow ?

Curiously, I just wrote a bit about that over on the "Polar Vortex" thread.

Short answer, a cubic foot of snow will weigh in at around six pounds, depending on a bunch of factors.

The rain that's forecast this weekend will make it much, much heavier, undoubtedly leading to some collapsed roofs.

More snow this AM - exercised the snowblower (again).  The shovel isn't as appealling a workout as it used to be.

A lot of resources are headed for the Buffalo area.  The USAF ANG folks at Syracuse posted video of two large snowblower departing, and I'm sure other large snowblowers are headed that way from other parts of the state as well.

We're back under a lake effect warning until noon tomorrow, which is about the time I have to leave for the railroad.  Might be an interesting drive.  Had a retirement luncheon for today cancelled, and our monthly firefighters association dinner for tonight was just cancelled.  They were serving "breakfast" with real maple syrup, too...

The pictures coming out of the Buffalo area are astounding.  One showed a driveway pretty much cleared out, leading to a street that wasn't...

Woke to clear skies this AM, but the band of lake effect swung through again and dropped perhaps an inch before going north of the border.  We get a respite for a while, then it starts again.

There's still a lot of local businesses digging out, and some schools and businesses did close.  The roads are mostly clear, though.

A comment commonly heard about the southern states was uttered on FB about Buffalo - "they don't have the equipment to handle such a storm."  If that's true in Buffalo, it means the really got hammered.  And get hammered they did, setting a one-day snowfall total of 76".

There are several photos and videos on-line showing just how tight the gradient can be between no snow and total white-out.

Still a lot of people who seem to have their ditchfinders on.  Maybe the towing companies will have a chance to catch up around here before the next round.

And Friday I have to head down through prime lake effect territory so I can take out the first trips of the Polar Express from Utica.

Tree ---  feel for those persons that got a band of snow 6 feet (?) that is un believable this early in season.  Snow birds clogging I-75 fleeing the north.  Now 18F here.  Plugged up bock jeaters to make an early trip to doctors.  Many Houses not built for this kind of cold here.!!!

We, too, don't have too much snow from this one (we're on the wrong side of Lake Effect...this time!), though we might wake up to an inch or two tomorrow morning when the temperatures rise.  We are at 16 right now, and it's not supposed to get any colder.

The wind is a trifle challenging.  I was raking leaves comfortably in temperatures like this yesterday, until the wind picked up.  It's stayed up since, and the parking lots were brutal when we did our Tuesday shopping trip.  We made it a more scenic one than usual by going out to Geneva (had a yummy lunch at Cabooses Bar in the Geneva Metra station!).  We saw plenty of trains, but they were either too far away from me or (at the bar) passing by too fast.  Only later did I think of taking a slo-mo video of the trains blowing by.  Of course, they were all gone.

The tunnel project in Lombard will get really boring early next month; the boring is expected to take a week or so.
