We've had a surprisingly tame winter so far, only a trace of snow for the entire month of December.  This is a major improvement over last year.

As far as cold, I noticed that the weather map on television last night showed a temperature of 36 degrees in Lost Wages.

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

Mookie
Norm - does it ever really get warm in Michigan?

Ms Mook - Norm lives about 15-20 miles from my old hometown in Michigan.  And I can assure you it gets plenty warm, albeit not like the desert southwest.  But +90F with 90% humidity is an experience, nonetheless.

The same goes for the wilds of northern New York.  While I've never bothered with an air conditioner here, lots of people do.

And so it begins.  Looks like most of the snow will stay south of me, though.  There's a light dusting outside right now.

Norm - does it ever really get warm in Michigan?  You are pretty far north, so I never think of you as exactly beach front property.

Tree - ditto to you!  And it is nice to see a little east coast humor!

No snow here yet - but Tug Hill may see a couple of feet of the stuff...

Brazenly borrowed from FB:  "To all my forum friends - I will be taking a bit of a vacation from the forum.  December 31, 2014 will be the last day I will be posting for a while.  I will return on January 1, 2015..."

I had to read it twice, too...

Well, the winds from Wyoming are here--up to 79 mph up at Farmington, but only up to 60 mph at the University. The worst part is not the action on 18-wheelers whose drivers are foolish enough to be out on the highway, but what power linemen must go through to restore electric power north of here. I doubt that they feel secure when up in their buckets as the wind gusts.

Our expected low tomorrow is about 8, with the high not making it to freezing.

Attention Paul of Covington:  You turned on your air and we now have 7 above, with a 22 mph wind (N) and 70% humidity.

Ms Mook - I'll see your cold and raise you some lake effect (advisory until Friday - up to two feet in persistant squall areas...).  For a bonus, we'll get some stiff winds as well...

Mookie, too bad we can make a deal: swap a little bit of your air for a little of ours.   And I'm not the one sending you cold air; it's probably those Canadians.

Attention, northerners:  our air conditioner just cycled on as I was reading about your weather.   My big worry is that last year I made a similar comment, and a couple of weeks later we were hit with record cold.

We're already miffed here, but not for the reasons you may think.  You see, we would have welcomed a bit of snow over Christmas, for our California daughter who misses winter and wanted to educate Linus on how much fun snow can be.  Despite some promising forecasts (even going as far as a winter storm watch), we were skunked.  Now the temperatures are supposed to drop tomorrow (their last day here), and the winds will rise, so any snow that falls won't be fun to play in.  No worries, though...no snow to speak of in our forecast.

We made a quick up-and-back trip to Michigan today, for a "power lunch" with a dozen or so folks that I attended high school with.  That was fun enough to be one of the year's highlights for me.  But it wasn't the only thing that happened on our day on the road.  Forecast called for lake-effect snow, but we saw plenty of menacing clouds, and that was it.

--There was a derailment on December 19 on the SouthShore at Michigan City (at the west end of the tracks to the NIPSCO power plant).  I hadn't heard anything about this, so it was surprising to find about a dozen coal gons on their sides.  They had been pulled away from the tracks, so things could be repaired.  There was a NICTD train sitting near the site this morning, for some unknown reason; I figure they were waiting for some repairs to be done before they could go through.  When we went past it again this evening, it didn't appear that anything had been done, but the NICTD train had disappeared.  After finding out how long ago the wreck happened, my theory is that the cars were pulled away and tipped so the coal could be unloaded from them.  Some were in pretty bad shape.  From pictures, it appears that the switch between the main line and the lead to the power plant was involved--and possibly the cause.

--Gasoline in west Michigan:  $1.679!

--A big book on Michigan railroad history was discovered and purchased.  Can't wait to get into it!  The author is probably the authority on Michigan railroads; I have a couple of his other books that I consider to be amazing references (I'm proud to say that we've met once, and I was able to provide some information that fit into one of his books).

MC, are you the one who is going to push cold air from Wyoming into Utah tomorrow? It's close to zero in Evanston, and we are going have strong east winds tomorrow. BRRRR! We expect single digit temperature Wednesday morning. Or, is Miniwyo sending us a gift?

This morning, I shoveled about four new inches of snow out of the walk to the street--this was in addition to about the same that I cleared Christmas morning--and we had close to that more before Christmas afternoon.

I just saw on the news an item about a twenty car wreck on I-80 on the other side of the Oquirrh Mountains. It may well have involved people going home from work.

And so it is with weather forecasting in general - if I forecast a 50% of showers, (the editorial) you'll complain if you're on either side of that line.  On the dry side because you altered your plans because of the possibility of rain (and it didn't), and on the wet side, because there was "only" a 50% chance of rain and you got wet.

Having lived in and out of Florida - there are two different understandings of 50% chance of rain.

In Florida it generally means, in the forecast area 50% of the area 'may' get some rain during the forecast period.

Outside Florida it generally means everywhere in the forecast area will get rain for 50% of the duration of the forecast period.

Both will claim success.

TV weather forecasting, one of a few jobs where you can be wrong so often and still get paid.

Some years ago, whilst attending the local community college, I was standing on the balcony of the student union building as a rainshower came through.

The parking lot was virtually empty, so there was a nice "canvas" for the rain to paint.

After the shower passed through, you could see a defined line in the parking lot - wet on one side, dry on the other.

At least one of the weather apps for smartphones, etc, now gives nearly minute-by-minute forecasts for exactly where you are.  And those same weather apps let you see what the weather radar shows for your location.

Does anyone, other than the weather channel, use those winter storm names?  I can't say I've heard them used by local or other national news/weather outlets.

anyone know if the stranded skiers due to snow in Europe were victims of a polar vortex?

Perhaps they were victims of the current fad of naming winter storms?Dead Storm "Avalanche" or storm "Cold as a witch's.......train" Mischief?
