Just "spitting," but snow.

Tree - you had kind of a nasty accident around Syracuse?  Isn't that in your area?

Not quite 100 miles south of me (Syracuse is just over 70 miles).  Been down that route many times.  Accident laid to an intoxicated driver who left his vehicle blocking a lane (he'd gotten out and was walking away).

Fortunately, there were no fatalities, although the tour group on the bus had their trip rather messed up.  They were headed from Toronto to NYC.

Raining.

But I did get all the bookkeeping done for the fire department for this month, in preparation for the meeting tonight.

(CSSH - Like Lake County, IN in your backyard is going through?)

Somewhat.  There's more of it in Illinois since we have an incredible number of special districts (school districts, park districts, sanitary districts, mosquito abatement districts, etc.) due to debt restrictions written into the 1870 state constitution.  We have a newer constitution but the special districts still exist.

Direct election of virtually every conceivable public official is an outgrowth of various reforms in the aftermath of the Gilded Age and during the Progressive Era.  It was probably an attempt to limit nepotism, cronyism, insider deals, etc.

In Colorado, at least two major populated counties had their final tallies delayed because nobody ran for county surveyor, causing write-in voting on a mass scale. (No surveyor ran because of too much professional liability exposure at $5000/ year for the post)

Which begs the question, why would county surveyor be a elected position?

Never too old to have a happy childhood!

Remember when you had to wait for the morning and sometimes the evening paper to see the results locally and nationwide.  Sometimes even spread over several days if the state was a big one.

Now one second after the poll closes, they are ready to tell you the projected winner.  How long before the voters are extinct and they just let the latest electronic devices pick the winners.  Anyone see a difference between that and now?    Mischief

Would the results be much worse?

I voted mid-morning and was all of #50 at my precinct.

Some interesting outcomes so far, although all the precincts haven't reported in yet.  Unfortunately, where statewide races are concerned, our votes up here in the north woods matter little, as "the city" pretty well overwhelms us.

Lazy day!  Voted by mail earlier, so didn't have that to do today.  60's and sunny - not too much wind.  Perfect fall day - seems like I always mess up and stay in on the good days and trek out on the the not so good days.

It was frosty and in the 20s this morning (there was a whole extra hour to cool down, I guess!), but it warmed up pretty nicely in the afternoon.  I was tending the Peck House museum this afternoon, and saw a pretty good assortment of trains, though the volume didn't seem very heavy.

Yesterday, I walked 6.7 miles, according to my smart-phone.  That walk got me from Lombard to Joliet and back by way of Chicago (well, Metra did give me a little assistance!).  I wanted to check out the new Englewood Flyover (which I thought was impressive) and the new platforms at Joliet (which most assuredly were not!).

There were no slowdowns at all as we crossed the NS tracks in Englewood.  Just think...it took them over 150 years to come up with this solution to one of the most annoying (from a passenger standpoint) crossings in the country.  I've been stuck at said crossing in at least two of the four directions waiting for the other railroad to let us get across.

The temporary platforms at Joliet were pretty poor replacements for the old waiting rooms...even the ones that didn't incorporate the original waiting room.  We got into town, and I was looking for (a) a rest room, and (b) a posted schedule anywhere on the premises.  Found neither.  So I went to a nearby restaurant for a lunch to go and a bathroom to stay, and got back to my train just in time to hear the recording announcement for intermediate stops, etc, about a minute before departure.  About the only practical thing about the new platform is that the Metra trains on the RI no longer have to cross the BNSF/CN/UP tracks to get to the station.

Headed into town, I was looking forward to grabbing a video of the new flyover, but the Rock Island Line/Mighty Good Road doesn't permit passenger access to the cab cars, at least not on off-peak trains.  Still, I liked the view of the Blue Island crossing from high above it.  Saw a CSX train waiting to get across the plant on the old CN line, so I guess that's working out for them.

Wish we could get Matt's help for de-leafing our yard.  Tomorrow is the day for that endeavor.

The   snow here Nov 1 scares the bejusus out of natives.

He he...

Saw snow in the air most of the way to Syracuse this AM.  Nothing accumulated.  Then it turned to rain.

It takes the locals a snowfall or two to get back "in the groove" (and stay out of the ditch) each year.  But we have a military base in the area, and there are always those for whom this is their first experience with the white stuff.  Sometimes bravado overtakes common sense, but the laws of physics and coefficients of friction quickly take care of that (as does a tow truck...)

Decent day at the Syracuse train show today.  Going back tomorrow.

Edit:  Hey, Carl - MA&N (MWHA) has a bunch of cars sitting just north of Boonville.  All are hoppers, some cylindrical, some flat sided.  Based on the reporting marks, they're probably SIT, as opposed to stored, but I really don't know.  There is a business that that takes plastic pellets, IIRC.  Some of the reporting marks (sorry, no specific numbers) include OCPX, ACFX, BFGX, and GVDX.  There's even a few blue ones there...

All the weather alarmists here are saying that the snow in the Ashville area means another cold winter. The   snow here Nov 1 scares the bejusus out of natives.  We certainly cannot know yet if there will be another polar vortex.

It was still shirtsleeve weather here in almost-Georgia last night, and I was compelled to wear Florida's official state cologne (bug repellant).  Started handing out candy at 7:00, and had run out by 8:00.  Must have had at least 50 kids, and not all who came by stopped.  Lots of people from outside the neighborhood; looked like the hordes of invading Mongols.  Weather is vastly different this morning - low was about 40 degrees, and it's windy.

We had a couple dozen visitors...a few more than I was expecting given the temperatures and the brutal wind out there (we had a 65-mph gust in the city).

The only costume I remember was being worn by a daschund.  No, he wasn't a hot dog...he was a taco.  Maybe he was a chihuahua, on second thought.

Ed, gorgeous granddaughters!  Homemade costumes?

A friend of my younger daughter and son-in-law made our grandson (who still has plenty of baby fat at 15 months) a costume of the "Stay Puft" marshmallow man from Ghostbusters.
