Ramrod - there are a few of us in here that remember Spike Jones.  His "Cocktails for Two" was a big favorite of mine as a kid.  I could listen to that over and over!

Dan - moderating - something like herding cats?  I don't think you ever really can "moderate".  Eventually this will probably all wither and die on the vine if left to its own devices.

Buying in same area?  Be sure you get some kind of rather large appliance you can run up and down your driveway and sidewalks.  Like a car - everyone should have at least one here in snow country.

OK - dump my purse - get my notes!  Had breakfast trackside.  BNSF put on a good, no great show!

Driver counted 17 trains - coal and freight and one freight with 2 Boeing plans @ the head end.  Only foreign power was NS.

Then after a short break @ home, went to get lunch and picnic in the park.  Big city dam where we saw 2 Ospreys fishing.  I had never seen them before, but Driver said they used to eat there all the time when he was fishing a few years ago.  Must have had fast food today because while they did a lot of diving, it didn't look like they caught much more than sardines.

68 degrees, sunny, gentle south breeze - perfect and really quiet day altogether.

Life is good!

Saturday was WET.  I got thoroughly soaked.  My trainman didn't have a raincoat, so I let him use mine.  He was out in it more that I was...

Our train from Utica encountered some problems with wet rail together with some mechanical issues, putting them way behind schedule.  Usually they're into Thendara before the "local" leaves.  We met them 10 miles south.

Aside from them being late, that wouldn't have been a problem (well, it does make for a lot of contact with the dispatcher), but a group of kayakers we were scheduled to pick up with the local, and who were soaked to the skin (remember, it was raining...) were a little peeved when the Utica train blew by the pickup point without slowing down.  We showed up about 25 minutes later with the local and did pick them up.

At least Sunday was nice, if cool.  And there's a frost/freeze warning overnight (depending on where you are) tonight.  Brrrr.  The only salvation is that there isn't a cloud in the sky, and I might get to see some Aurora Borealis...

Tree:  You are just a few days behind us.  I was afraid we would get snow since we did get down into the high 30's.  Evidently western NE did see a little.

We also had kayakers out on the dam yesterday.  A whole group of newbies.  They got their land instructions and then shoved off to the middle of the lake.  Sometimes the best part of watching them is the setting up of the oars.

Do you ever get the giggles- when you're not supposed to?  Recently, we were in church, Lisa and I  and 2 of our sons.  During a quiet moment, I blurted out "Oh boy!", in kind of a loud whisper.
Lisa said "What's the matter?".
I said "Nothing".
In a concerned voice she said "I thought I heard you say Oh boy!".
I said "I did. I just can't remember why I said it.".
Then we got the giggles, and had to bite our cheeks and look at our shoes.

SJ, it sounds like a great day you had.  Our Friday was similar--I wasn't able to get much info, but the trains going past me, both in Elmhurst and in Lombard, numbered in the dozens in about five hours total (not counting the time I was in the dentist's office).

We are up in the Land of No Trains again, and it's living up to the hype so far.  We even went to Durand and saw nothing.  Of course, we spent time in a good restaurant with no view of the tracks and enough ambient noise to drown out any trains that may have gone through.

We also had kayakers out on the dam yesterday.

On Saturday a large contingent of kayakers set out on Fourth Lake (Fulton Chain) to set a new record for number of "rafted" kayaks.  I hear that they succeeded, but I don't know how many kayaks were involved.

Sunday we had some of those participants on the train.

Final segment for the year.

Whatever....

To take the conversation in a different direction:

Was Watching Fox& Friends, and just in the last little bit; they showed a brief story of a train Wreck... On the UP RR, apparently, in a Southeasterly direction from Tuscon, Arizona.  (on UP's Sunset Route?)

The picture was of several WELL CARS,WITH THEIR  CONTAINERS STACKED UP LIKE JACK-STRAWS; the commentary being that it was due to heavy rain ion the area  ( Rain caused by the movement of former Hurricane Odile).  NO other details as to other factors.

Sam, the train that had an incident was probably blown over by horizontal wind. The weather guessers  on ch10  said so.  The land is fairly flat in that area and is known for the rolling winds. I-10 runs along side of the tracks heading north to Phx.  That area is a cheap thrill for 18wheelers and Rec Vs. Right now the threat is for "heavy thunder storms in our area"  from Tucson north to Flagstaff from what the (dart board throwers )say. Film  and facts at 5pm. Right now ,  lightning and thunder boomers are doing their thing here at Cordes Jct. on I-17.

                                                   Respectfully, Cannonball

Only ran out that way a few times.  Mostly at night.  It weather 'talking heads' laid the blame for the incident on the heavy rains from the last of Trop Storm Odile....  Understand the problems with high profiles and lighht loads in cross-winds.

Nigel the scottie is home from the vet, less a rear toe. Prognosis is good, but the furniture is about to be attacked by Beldar Conehead's dawg (after the medication and painkiller wears off)....My brain feels like his toeIck!

The cat next door has the advantage in the backyard for about two weeks, then look out!

We're both gonna snooze after dinner.

That's good news!  Just hope he doesn't figure out that it was you and not the furniture that took him to the vet - steeled-toed shoes to bed!

Perfect!  And for the younger set, Spike Jones is the one in the white/straw? hat.  All I ever saw of him was his picture on the album cover.  Never realized there is video of his antics!

Now for the Keystone Kops!

If you get to deliver to the cargo dock at an airline a lot of the airlines(at least the biggies) used to be open 24/7. Many years back had a multi stop delivery to United like that. Customer Service had booked a bunch of appointments based on 9-5. Sked over 4 days. Got it all done in 2.

Just getting in from an EMS call.  Gonna hit the sack again, but hit the 'Net for a few, including a visit to the Netherlands railcam.  Three trains (including a meet at the crossing with a passenger train and an autorack train), and two fire trucks (which weren't running "lights and siren"), not to mention numerous bikes and scooters.

I hear my pillow beckoning.

I was able to escape Texas after basic - but did do two stints at "don't shoot 'em, Chanute 'em," which is now closed.   The mayor of Rantoul was once quoted as saying that closing the base was the best thing that ever happened to the town.  Industry moved in after the close, including at least one major trucking company.

The former IC mainline through town has long since been reduced to one track, and the branches east and west are gone now, too, I believe.

Getting ready for our second "cold snap" of the year.  Won't be long before we'll be looking forward to "warm snaps..."

Wow!  We are having our warm snap today.  78 but with humidity above 55%.  Next couple of days will be 85-90 and same humidity before it starts cooling back down.

Busy day - fishing this am, drugstore shopping, grocery shopping, bought me some new glasses, which I barely wear, but need them for distance and then Chinese for supper.  And home in time for Judge Judy!

I am exhausted and warm!  But weekend is now free to do whatever we decide.  (Well, ok - never free, but always reasonable!)
