We're already miffed here, but not for the reasons you may think. You see, we would have welcomed a bit of snow over Christmas, for our California daughter who misses winter and wanted to educate Linus on how much fun snow can be. Despite some promising forecasts (even going as far as a winter storm watch), we were skunked. Now the temperatures are supposed to drop tomorrow (their last day here), and the winds will rise, so any snow that falls won't be fun to play in. No worries, though...no snow to speak of in our forecast.We made a quick up-and-back trip to Michigan today, for a "power lunch" with a dozen or so folks that I attended high school with. That was fun enough to be one of the year's highlights for me. But it wasn't the only thing that happened on our day on the road. Forecast called for lake-effect snow, but we saw plenty of menacing clouds, and that was it. --There was a derailment on December 19 on the SouthShore at Michigan City (at the west end of the tracks to the NIPSCO power plant). I hadn't heard anything about this, so it was surprising to find about a dozen coal gons on their sides. They had been pulled away from the tracks, so things could be repaired. There was a NICTD train sitting near the site this morning, for some unknown reason; I figure they were waiting for some repairs to be done before they could go through. When we went past it again this evening, it didn't appear that anything had been done, but the NICTD train had disappeared. After finding out how long ago the wreck happened, my theory is that the cars were pulled away and tipped so the coal could be unloaded from them. Some were in pretty bad shape. From pictures, it appears that the switch between the main line and the lead to the power plant was involved--and possibly the cause.--Gasoline in west Michigan: $1.679!--A big book on Michigan railroad history was discovered and purchased. Can't wait to get into it! The author is probably the authority on Michigan railroads; I have a couple of his other books that I consider to be amazing references (I'm proud to say that we've met once, and I was able to provide some information that fit into one of his books). Woke up to 6 deg this morning, it now all the way to 17deg ! Wind is out of the NE at 20. Walked the dog yesterday in shirt sleaves.... Winter really sucks!
Not much going on over on the neighbors an erastbond stacker about 0430 and just now one going westbound. Guess they are getting into their holiday schedule?

Well, the winds from Wyoming are here--up to 79 mph up at Farmington, but only up to 60 mph at the University. The worst part is not the action on 18-wheelers whose drivers are foolish enough to be out on the highway, but what power linemen must go through to restore electric power north of here. I doubt that they feel secure when up in their buckets as the wind gusts.
Our expected low tomorrow is about 8, with the high not making it to freezing.

Norm - does it ever really get warm in Michigan? You are pretty far north, so I never think of you as exactly beach front property.

Ms Mook - Norm lives about 15-20 miles from my old hometown in Michigan. And I can assure you it gets plenty warm, albeit not like the desert southwest. But +90F with 90% humidity is an experience, nonetheless.
The same goes for the wilds of northern New York. While I've never bothered with an air conditioner here, lots of people do.
And so it begins. Looks like most of the snow will stay south of me, though. There's a light dusting outside right now.
We've had a surprisingly tame winter so far, only a trace of snow for the entire month of December. This is a major improvement over last year.
As far as cold, I noticed that the weather map on television last night showed a temperature of 36 degrees in Lost Wages.
